A performance enhancing drug is any substance taken by athletes to improve performance. Some athletes take straight testosterone to increases their muscle mass and strength. Other forms allow athletes to train harder and recover faster, or increases the amount of red blood cells, resulting in more oxygen to your muscles. There are many more types of performance enhancing drugs, but they all work very similarly. Performance enhancing drugs are boosts of different types of hormones. Such as anabolic steroids, which is a boost of testosterone. Or androstenedione, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This boost enhances or enlarges the effect of that hormone. This topic is controversial

I am going to tell you about the benefits of anabolic steroids, androstenedione, erythropoietin, diuretics, and stimulants. Anabolic steroids is a hormone that increases your muscle mass and strength. This can boost athletes performance, or help them recover from a hard workout more quickly by reducing muscle damage. This enables athletes to work out harder and more often without overtraining. Androstenedione is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that also allows athletes to recover quicker from workouts, but it does not increase muscle size or mass. However, it is illegal as a performance enhancing drug in the US. Erythropoietin increases the amount of red blood cells and hemoglobin produced, this results in more oxygen moving to the muscles. This hormone is most commonly used by endurance athletes, such as marathon runners. Diuretics changes your body’s natural balance of fluids and salts, this can lead to dehydration. This loss of water decreases an athletes weight, which allows them to compete in a lower weight class. A wrestler would be a common user of this drug. Stimulants are used to stimulate the nervous system and increase heart rate and blood pressure. A stimulant can improve endurance, reduce fatigue, suppress appetite, and increase alertness and aggressiveness. So, overall performance enhancing drugs have many different benefits to all kinds of
Most drugs can be put into one of the five categories of performance-enhancing drugs. Anabolic steroids are mainly strength builders. They are available in forms that can be flushed out of your system within a few hours. The most popular of these drugs is the synthetic testosterone. Most people have a one-to-one ratio of testosterone and epitosterone.
Steroids are used daily in America in body building, medicine, and food production. There are three main types of steroids, Corticosteroids, Anabolic steroids, and hormone steroids. Corticosteroids are the kind of steroids doctors prescribe to patients when they are sick or have some kind of medical issue. These steroids reduce overactive immune responses and reduce swelling. Anabolic steroids are used for building muscle. They also contain a lot of testosterone. Testosterone is naturally produced by one's body but too much can cause a vast variety of problems. Hormone steroids are the steroids people put in animals (DeNoon).
For those who've never heard of the term PED's, Performance enhancing drugs are any supplements that are considered to allow one perform better in their respective sports ,such as anabolic steroids and HGH( Human Growth hormones). The effects of these supplements can range from expediting muscle to increasing one's stamina. PEDs began to become the center of controversy when the I.O.C set up a medical commission to oversee the fight against doping, which ultimately lead to the ban of PED's in professional sports. Stemming off from the I.O.C...
To begin with, there are two main types of steroids: adrenal steroids and sex steroids. Because of the great therapeutic value of adrenal steroids, many synthetic steroids have been made; some more potent than the natural hormones. Synthetic steroids are anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptives. A synthetic adrenal steroid is used to treat adrenal insufficiency. Anabolic steroids are also synthetic and they mimic the male hormone testosterone. Anabolic steroids are most often abused by athletes and can have serious side effects when taken improperly (Silverstein, p.14). The term "anabolic " means "to build tissue"; therefore, anabolic steroids tend to increase constructive me...
"Anabolic steroids is the familiar name for synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones (e.g., testosterone). They promote the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects) in both males and females”(National Institute on Drug Base).First, the benefits of steroids are very obvious to see. The user gains strength, mass, and speed in a short amount of time. Also, the user has a more aggressive attitude, which is good for football players. However, there are more bad side effects than good.
Anabolic steroids are drugs derived from the male hormone testosterone. They promote muscle growth and increase lean body mass. Although anabolic steroids have many approved medical uses, some athletes and others seeking to improve performance and physical appearance abuse them. These nonmedical uses are illegal and carry many health hazards. There are many signs that one can look for in a person who is suspected of using Anabolic Steroids. There is dramatic gain in weight and muscle mass over a short period of time (NIDA September1997). Another is severe acne. Others could be water retention, baldness or hair loss, even in the worst cases severe and sometimes violent mo...
Anabolic Steroids are a synthetic for of the naturally occurring hormone, testosterone. Anabolic steroids are used to promote accelerated muscle hypertrophy in both males and females.
It is common sense that sports enhancing or any other drugs contain negative physical side effects. For instance, “males can become infertile and experience breast growth, while women can develop facial hair and an altered or completely suppressed menstrual cycle” (“Hoyle”). Balancing weight also starts to become an issue. In many sports, athletes wish to lose weight so they can compete in a lighter weight class” (“Diuretics”). These types of drugs are called Diuretics. Diuretics are used to remove water from the body. If the desired amount of fluid isn’t removed, the person feels that they should intake more until their mass goal is reached. If too many of these are taken, they can become very addictive, like any other
Anabolic steroids are drugs containing, or hormone-like substances, that are used to increase strength and promote muscle growth. They were first developed in the 1930s in Europe to treat undernourished patients and to promote healing after surgery. Competitive weightlifters began using steroids in the 1950s as a way to increase their athletic performance. Use gradually spread throughout the world among athletes in other has been estimated that at least one in 15 male high school seniors in the United States--more than a half-million boys--has used steroids. Some are athletes attempting to increase their strength and size; others are simply youths attempting to speed up their growth to keep pace with their peers. In some countries, anabolic steroids are available over the counter. In the United States, a doctor's prescription is necessary.
Anabolic Steroids or simply put, “Steroids”, is a medicine which has become increasingly popular in the last few decades, specifically in the world of professional sports and body building. In a literal term, the word anabolic means building of the body muscle and by using anabolic steroids, the potential user becomes stronger, sharper, larger and tougher than he would normally be. The consequences of these steroids could be much bigger to a human body and the usage of such illegal products could put an individual’s body at great risk (Haupt & Rovere, 1983).
Over one million American seek short cuts to larger muscles and greater endurance with anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Steroids are drugs that act like chemical in the body. Most steroids are transformed into testosterone when they enter the body. Testosterone is a male growth hormone. While user may gain short-term results, they are seriously shortchanging their health (Kalawalski 13-15).
Steroids have been in sports for the longest time. But the use of them has increased tremendously over time. Many athletes use them to bulk up and get more muscle. In the long run though, using steroid can seriously hurt an athlete. “The use of performance-enhancing drugs is not accidental; it is planned and deliberate with the sole objective of getting an unfair advantage.” (npr.org). This is what Richard Pound said during a debate over the use of steroids in baseball. The use of steroids by professional athletes is becoming more common, so it needs to be put to a halt to protect the wellbeing of athletes.
If one were to turn on the television and watch the news you would hear a lot of news stories, but you won’t commonly hear about a rising incline in steroids in today’s society. Today many people, even children, are using steroids to gain a strength advantage over their peers. So why are people using steroids?
Many athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs, or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition dates back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher, and recover at an increased pace.
The debate over the legalization of performance-enhancing drugs, also known as PEDs, has been on the rise. Performance enhancing drugs are the illegal drugs or substances that are taken by athletes to improve their performance. The term doping is used to describe the act of using PEDs. In the recent years, many famous athletes have been convicted of PED abuse. Among these famous athletes is Lance Armstrong, a famous cyclist who won multiple Tour de France titles.
