According to Brian Dunbar, NASA Administrator, "Aerodynamics is the way air moves around things." Furthermore, it is a branch of fluid dynamics that is concerned with the study of forces and gas flow and based on the concept of Newtonian Mechanics. Whatsoever moves through air reacts to aerodynamics. A rocket launching and a kite in the sky both react to aerodynamics. According to Avaiationbox, "The solution of an aerodynamic problem normally involves calculating for various properties of the flow such as velocity, pressure, density and temperature, as a function of space and time." In addition, it states that the aerodynamics have two classification criteria where study of flow around solid objects is one and the study of flow through passages …show more content…
The major goal of aerodynamics is also to anticipate the aerodynamic forces on an aircraft. In achieving such goal, there are four factors of aerodynamics to be considered: lift, drag, thrust and weight. The four factors of aerodynamics are lift, drag, thrust and weight. According to NASA, "Weight is the force due to a gravity. Thrust is the force generated by the engine. Whereas lift is the aerodynamic force acting perpendicular to the direction of travel of aircraft relative to air, and drag is as the aerodynamic force acting parallel to the direction of travel." Aerodynamics is a significant factor in any vehicle design, including automobiles as well as assisting while calculating wind load of large buildings and bridges. Conservation of Mass, Conservation of Momentum and Conservation of Energy are three factors that are used to solve aerodynamics problem. In addition, pressure, density, temperature and velocity are fundamental variables that are used to study aerodynamics. However, the result is based on the assumption …show more content…
(2-3) Even though there are lots of development in present days aircrafts, they still lack certain aerodynamic efficiency in bad weather. The authors tried to clarify and explain what happens at different stages when there is a change in the aerodynamics of the plane. Moreover, they stated that when there is heavy rain, there will be particular change in the lift and weight ratio which then affects the balancing forces of a plane and influence the aerodynamics of a plane overall. (3-5) The authors said, "Examining in a bad weather situation is more challenging for everyone." (Page 3) They said that the change in weather lacks them to do some of the experiments that should be made in order to compare between the aerodynamics of standard or ordinary weather condition. After doing numerous experiments, the authors said that they were able to find out the pitching moment co-efficient of a plane. In addition, they also said that, in bad weather condition, the parasite drag is affected which decreases the lift to drag ratio of a plane. (Page 5) The authors said that the lift is a force that will balance the downward weight and helps to put extra upward force whereas drag is a force that is created by the presence of air on the path that the
Now To talk about the forces that allow the car to move. There are two main aerodynamic forces acting on any object moving through the air. Lift is a force that acts 90° to the direction of travel of an object. Usually we think of lift when we think of an airplane. The plane travels forward (horizontally), and lift acts 90° to that motion of travel –
Activity #1 FLIGHT A kid named Zits who lives in Seattle, is only fifteen years old. He’s tall, skinny, ugly, and sometimes mean. He also has forty-seven zits and that’s where he gets his name from. Zits is Irish, Indian and is a foster child.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is an amazing book that follows the lives of some very amazing women. Kidd shows what it meant to be a slave and what it meant to be a woman. This book mostly deals with slavery and how it affects people who are slaves, how they suffered but also how it affected people who were against slavery and trying to change the world. Kidd also covers sexism and what it means to be a woman with ambition, drive and wanting to be a woman who abolishes slavery. This book mainly follows the life of Sarah Grimke, a girl with drive, ambitions, and ideas; but who is also the daughter of a slave owning judge who lives in Charleston.
Aerodynamics is generally summarized in these 2 terms: “Lift against Weight” and “Thrust against Drag”. This basically means the amount of flight power generated must be equal to, or greater than the amount of weight of the airplane, and the amount of pushing generated, must be equal to or greater than the airs resistance. But the overall question, so far, is how is “Lift” and “Thrust” generated? The answer to how “Thrust” is generated is quite simple. Its sort of how a car would move, except in a much different way. Airplanes have 4 engines, which can each exert easily up to 200 PSI of air (pressure per square inch), composed of liquid fuel cylinders, and internal combustion (like a car). It also tops to 250 km per hour on the runway! But how “Lift” is generated is, the true definition of aerodynamics. The first thing you must consider to understand this is that the wing of the plane is specially designed, to force the air above the wing to rush faster, than the air beneath it. This works according to the “Bernoulli’s principle”. The reason air above the wing must be fast...
Many people are amazed with the flight of an object, especially one the size of an airplane, but they do not realize how much physics plays a role in this amazing incident. There are many different ways in which physics aids the flight of an aircraft. In the following few paragraphs some of the many ways will be described so that you, the reader, will realize physics at work in the world of flight.
Aerodynamics is the study of the motion of fluids in the gas state and bodies in motion relative to the fluid/air. In other words the study of aerodynamics is the study of fluid dynamics specifically relating to air or the gas state of matter.
The aerodynamic efficiency is the single most important element in designing a competitive car for professional racing or getting the car model on the front of a Car and Driver or Motortrend. Aerodynamics is the study of the motion of gases on objects and the forces created by this motion. The Bernoulli effect is one of the most important behind car design. The Bernoulli Effect states that the pressure of a fluid, in gaseous or liquid state, varies inversely with speed or velocity and a slower moving fluid will exert more pressure on and object than the same fluid moving slower (Yager). The goal of car designers is to make the air passing under a car move faster than the air passing over the car. This causes the air passing over the car to create more downforce than the air passing under the car creates upforce creating a force additional to the car’s weight pushing the car to the road. Large amounts of downforce are needed to keep light cars grounded at high speed and keep to cars from sliding around turns at high speeds.
As the air flows over the wing producing lift, it grabs onto the wings surface and causes drag. Drag can be measured by the equation D=Cd 1/2 (pV2)S, much like the lift equation. The drag coeficent Cd is found, again, by determining ...
Aerogel is a synthetic porous ultra-light material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas, resulting in a solid with extremely low density and low thermal conductivity. Nicknames include "frozen smoke", "solid smoke", "solid air" or "blue smoke" owing to its translucent quality and the way light scatters in the material. However, it feels like Styrofoam to the touch.
Ever since I was little I was amazed at the ability for a machine to fly. I have always wanted to explore ideas of flight and be able to actually fly. I think I may have found my childhood fantasy in the world of aeronautical engineering. The object of my paper is to give me more insight on my future career as an aeronautical engineer. This paper was also to give me ideas of the physics of flight and be to apply those physics of flight to compete in a high school competition.
Mr. Mendoza: I am an Engineer Specialist at CESSNA. I am more in the Aero Sciences department. We focus on aerodynamics, stability and control, and computational aerodynamics. We also develop flight simulators and business jets.
Sir Isaac Newton is the man well known for his discoveries around the term, Motion. He came up with three basic ideas, called Newton’s three laws of motion.
Here, we can use the vectors to use the Pythagorean Theorem, a2 + b2 = c2, to find the speed and angle of the object, which was used in previous equations.
How many times have an average person flown in an airplane, did people ever think what the world would be like without them? Airplanes have provided people with opportunities to go all over the world to experience different cultures and places. They also create jobs for many people which contributes to how they boost the economy. In conclusion, they appear as a more clean way to travel, helping out the Earth. The airplane was one of the most important inventions due to it creating jobs, creating easier cultural access, causes economic boosts, and created less pollution than most means of travel and also has an interesting history.
