What are rights? Rights are a freedom to express yourself, a freedom to worship as you wish, a right to prompt fair trial by jury, a right to vote in elections for public officials, a right to apply for a federal employment requiring a United States citizenship, a right to run for a elective office, and most of all a right to protest and fight for what you believe in. Is it fair to be told “ No you can’t do that” when you believe what your doing is the right thing to do. No its not fair! that is why i have picked abortion rights. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy so that it does not result in birth. I strongly believe that abortion is wrong no matter the circumstance, but everyone has a different opinion. Abortion has been performed for thousands of years, it has been performed since the first settlers came to the united states. The states began passing laws that made abortion illegal in the late 1800’s. The motivations for anti abortion laws varied from state to state. One of the reasons were against it is because population would be dominated by the children of new arriving immigrants had higher birth rates than “native” anglo-saxon women. All surgical procedures including abortion were very risky in the 1800’s. The dangers from abortion were similar to the dangers from surgeries that were not out lawed. In the 1800’s the large amounts of women who needed abortions had no choice but to get them from illegal practitioners. Even when it was illegal abortion was practiced. For a women to get an abortion, safe or not it depended on her economic situation. In the 1960’s the people who performed the abortion turned away women if they could not pay $1,000 or more. Proponents of this arguments point to cases of areas with limited sex education that have high abortion rates, either legal or illegal. Some women also travel to another jurisdiction or other country were they may obtain an abortion. Some people who support abortion rights see abortion as a last result and focus on a number of situations were they feel abortion is a necessary option.
