The year of 1920 was a time of tremendous prosperity for American culture. The concept of advertising emerged in American society as the result of progressive industrialization during nineteenth century. Mass advertising eyed on human necessities as the way to create markets and hence promoted new products in the consumer society of America. Companies advertised in magazines and newspapers and attracted large audience. Hiring of famous movie stars and sports personalities by the advertisers persuaded Americans to buy all types of products i.e. food items, utensils, medicines, coffee, electronic gadgets, cosmetic and sports products. It was the time when American’s inclination to sports; specifically love for baseball was on its peak. With the explosion of mass production and lowered prices, items were more accessible and common. Due to vastness of United States geographic area combining with the limited resources of traveling in states, American people had little communications with each other, so they dress, behave, and spoke differently. However, 1920 brought one of the most important inventions that changed the lives of Americans is the automobile. The Automobiles helped both industries and American population. In industry, the automobile has helped create mass production of these vehicles. The automobile sparked the economy because it brought in revenue and jobs. With the invention of Automobile industry in 1920’s and its large mass production and low pricing the automobiles became widely available. Automobiles changed transportation, expanded cities, and improved American’s life. As soon as the vehicle reached up every American, they started to travel to other parts of states very easily. People were able to move from the central city to small cities. This created links among the people and transportation became the mode of communication among American’s. Consequently, Americans who use to live small towns started to adopt the behaviors, clothes and speech belonging to people of urban area. Moreover, Radio, the first mass broadcasting medium, was also introduced in the 1920's. With the invention of radio technology people started to listen up to same news, music, radio programs etc. As a result people use to repeat all the things what they had heard on radio like songs, speeches, etc. The radio programs spread modern ideas and advertisements to millions of listeners. Furthermore, when these American’s met up with each other, they share their experiences of daily life and what they heard on radio. Radio and automobile were the technologies that break up the provincialism and brought up the American closer to each other and thus were hall marks in creating a common American culture. Consumerism with invention of new technologies in 1920’s provided fortification of a common culture among American’s and paved the way for modernized United States of America.
The three chapters assigned to be read out of Satisfaction Guaranteed: The Making of the American Mass Market, a novel by Susan Strasser, outline the consumer culture of the United States around the end of 19th century, following the conclusion of the civil war. The chapters work chronologically and describe the rapid evolution of companies’ production, advertising and branding techniques. Evidently, these two guys know how to sell something. When I see an advertisement, I see them like Solomon and Charles did. They are like businessmen trying to sell a product. The advertisements aren't just selling a product to Americans, but rather the advertisements are directed towards a targeted market. For example; a commercial that wants to sell a regular beer will show normal guys hanging out. They could be at a bar, fishing, or having a picnic. The people will be having a fun time. The targeted market would be mostly men because in the commercials it's mostly men with the exception of a beautiful woman here and there.

Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. The author of this book Bruce Barton was a partner in a successful advertising firm during the 1920’s. This was a time when the industry of advertising was under going some major changes. These changes had a lot to do with a number of factors the first of which being the post war prosperity this meant people had more money than they ever had before. Another one of these factors had to do with the high number of teens who were now attending high school, this proved to be important because it created a whole other market which hadn’t existed before. One more factor was the advances made in transportation and communication, these advances allowed goods, people, and information to travel long distances relatively quickly intern allowing companies to grow large enough to spread their services nationally. Still another important factor was the invention of financing, this allowed people to pay for durable objects (large objects that would last a couple of years) with affordable installments or payments. But the biggest changes were the actual advertising practices themselves, many of which were pioneered by Barton and his associates, and didn’t become norms in advertising until after the release of Bartons book “The Man Nobody Knows” in 1924. This book served not only as a manual on how to advertise more affectively but also as an example of good advertising itself.
