Fashion design was something I always loved. As a young child, I would always watch my mother sew clothes and, I grew up being fascinated in the things she would create. I’d always ask to be taught the inner workings of a sewing machine and hoped that that one day I would be able to sew. Eventually, the art of taking fabric and transforming it into something amazing started to become my hobby…Because of my mother’s artistic influence in my life, I was able to find my love for designing and decided that creating clothes was something I wanted to do. This ambition of becoming a fashion design student and a future fashion designer is one of reasons why I believe I’m the perfect candidate for the Fashion Institute of Technology.
In the last few years I’ve done many fashion design related activities because, of my drive to succeed as a designer. I attended different sewing workshops held at my local fabric store and, I even took the opportunity to shadow an actual fashion design student. In High School, I joined an organization called FCCLA that gave me the opportunity to participate in multiple Recycle and Redesign competitions. I always spent time creating dresses out of weird materials such as paper towels and received many silver metals. Upon

The school’s location in New York City, along with the renowned staff, create the perfect environment in which I can improve my weaknesses in and strengthen my strengths. The competitive nature of the school’s fashion design program would test the limits of my creativity and, would push me to become more innovative in my designs. I also enjoy the fact that I’ll be able to start my major classes right away. Furthermore upon graduating from the school, I would use the skills I obtained through my major to create a Ready-to-wear line that brings unusual fabric construction and manipulation techniques to daily everyday
...ssed with such skills to be successful, there is always time to improve both business and designing skills to become a successful fashion designer.
With African Americans being apart of the fashion industry, they faced many hardships. However, they created a distinctive voice in the history of fashion. Throughout the early twentieth century, Blacks designers influenced the fashion industry in America, having, “a system and structure for maintaining their particular type of fashion.” African American fashion was very popular and caught the attention from the media. Department stores held successful fashion shows, screened fashion movies, and staged fashion pageants. Fortunately, African Americans were allowed to attend these events, yet they were not welcomed. Fast-forward to today, the fashion industry has opened up several doors for African American designers, stylist, and models. However,
Sophomore year I heard about the STAR events for FCCLA, ever since then I’ve wanted to compete in them, particularly fashion design. The reason I have never competed in FCCLA is because sophomore year I didn’t feel that my skills were well developed yet. Then junior year I competed in tech-theatre for costume design and made it all the way to state. So now senior year has come and I feel that I’ve been preparing myself for two years for this moment. If I’m given the chance to compete I will be fully dedicated to my work and see to it that everything surpasses my standards. I know that I’m capable of doing this because of not only my mind set to it but also my past of competing in tech-theatre. I would stay after school for hours, spent almost every day at home working on it, sometimes all through the night because I didn’t want my train of thought or work focus to be lost. I made due dates for myself so that I was pacing my time correctly and not rushing to do last minute. Something else I did was when it came to the essay part of the competition I had my English teacher proof read it. I also had last year’s fashion teacher give me pointers on my sketching and swatches. The reason for doing that was to help make sure that it was as close to perfection as possible. Lastly I would best represent Stevens fashion club at the FCCLA competitive events by being true to myself and my work. Over the years I have grown as a person because of fashion club and it has taught me that being myself is key in not only school but in life.
In conclusion I have told you a little about Tommy Hilfiger's life and his rise to success. I told you how his empire grew and became so successful and the awards he achieved for his continued success. I believe Hilfiger will continue to strive and be a successful man because you is a hard working, dedicated, and motivated man. He has all the attributes of a man that could run an empire like he does. I found researching him very interesting and i was happy to learn all the stuff that I never knew about him! I thoroughly enjoyed this essay and glad to know a little more about the man the designs my clothes. “I'm a designer of more than clothes. I am a designer of a very creative concept.”
The fashion industry provides both creative and business-oriented positions, making the fashion world interesting. Fashion moves in cycles, and many, especially those who work within the industry, describe fashion as very fickle. When it comes to people one might work within the industry, fashion attracts eccentric, creative people who are often very difficult to work for and with, and those within the fashion world can be very brutal and backstabbing. Starting salaries can be very low, workspaces can be crowded and noisy, and schedules can be unpredictable and hours are often long and labor-intensive. Though, there is potential for large salaries, travel, and fun, there is can also be quiet, solitude, and security, largely depending on where one works in the field. If one works in the fashion ind...
To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image. It is a way to present individuality and personality. A physical mouldable form of expression. Designers wish to create works of art that can be worn, and this is wear clothing becomes an art form.
Being at the decisive starting point of the entire fashion chain, the fashion designer plays a vital role in their design creations, in deciding what is “in”, and as such what is the ideal in terms
From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.
Art and design are huge aspects of life today, and it influences everyone. Whether we realize it or not, there are signs all around us of trained professionals from art-related industries (Hennessey). Art and design careers can take forms that many people may not have thought about: people with art and design degrees find work in nearly every industry imaginable, in roles that didn’t even exist ten or fifteen years ago (“Art and Design Careers”). Industries and related careers are constantly expanding, providing art and design students with new opportunities. Possibilities for art and design careers are nearly infinite, and and they’re always growing.
I enjoy making sketches of clothing that one day will hopefully be available in stores all over. Fashion designing in my opinion is a way to express the unique side of your creativity, also fashion designing is a career that I believe I can achieve in so highly if I stay focused and continue to putting forth effort in my creations. I could see interior designing as a possible career in my future because it’s somewhat similar to fashion designing just in the designing area. Both involve having a since of style and an eye for color, texture and pattern coordination.
Over shadowing functionality, fashion is human’s next need for embellishment, followed by power or status.“Fashion is, in many ways, like a river.” -Elaine Stone. It is constantly moving forward and changing. Consequently, fueling the fashion business and allowing it to prosper. In other words if there is no change, then there will be no fashion, thus no bussiness. Over the decades millions of brands and designers have been trying to adapt to the rapid and ongoing change in fashion. Those who fail to attune with constant change tend to correlate to failure in business. However, those who do adapt to constant change in fashion have the tendency to succeed in business. Three distinct trend setting designers that have successfully adapted to change are Burberry, Vera Wang and Chanel.
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
While growing up, I realized the benefits a person has when they personally own their own business. You can make your own schedule, personally control your finances, and essentially have complete control of your business Of course upon this realization; I came to the conclusion that I was going to be my own boss. I have always taken pride in how I present myself including how I dress. The limitless nature of fashion and its versatility has always intrigued me. One empowering aspect of clothing that is so fascinating is how it enables people to express themselves. Because of these interests, I have come to the conclusion that I wish to own a fashion boutique. In order to pursuit the path of becoming a fashion boutique owner, it is essential that I obtain a degree in business management, evaluate my own skills that make me ideal for the job, and
...is instilled in me, that I must gain as much knowledge as possible in order to succeed in life. In the fashion industry, one must continue to learn about the world around them in order to keep up with the changes in the industry. There are many different ways today that I can keep up with what is going on in the fashion world without going to school, but school will prepare me for the challenges that are to come. The only previous work experience that I had working in a fashion was at Mortal Kombat. I did not stay at the job very long because of personal issues that I had with staff. I feel that I need to get involved in some type of fashion job so that I can network better. Networking is essential in the fashion business, because you may never see people that you want to talk to but word-of-mouth can open doors that lead you in the direction that you wanted to go.
All things considered, I firmly believe that people devoted to fashion clothing could earn self-esteem and make them more confident. Nevertheless, it is significant to be original and capable of deciding what to wear by ourselves instead of following the trends without consider our personality. Needless to say, no one should discriminate someone because of not being in fashion. It is our responsibility to give the right importance to
