When I was a sophomore in high school, I was not certain what to do with my life because I just moved to the United States a year ago from South Korea. Fortunately, I met a dentist who was willing to let me shadow him. During my time shadowing, he asked me to perform basic duties, such as peeling an apple with a knife (he insisted that it would help my dexterity) or replacing the rubber bands on his patients ' braces. Performing these tasks was enjoyable because they reminded me of my childhood hobbies such as building miniature cars and robots, which contributed the development of my dexterity with tools. Through observation of dental procedures, I grew to love dentistry because it requires dexterity, and my desire to alleviate people 's pain also began to grow as I witnessed patients’ lives improve as they received dental treatment.
I had more hands-on experiences in dentistry when I participated in a mission trip to Mongolia. One of my mission team members was a dentist, and she provided free dental extractions to people in the region. I volunteered myself to help clean dental equipment and prepare empty exam chairs for the next patient. Witnessing the appreciation expressed on my patients ' faces was worth every minute of labor. It reassured me of my passion for dentistry, and my respect for the dentist 's willingness to utilize her abilities to serve others ignited the desire within me to do

The goal was to show admission faculties of dental schools that I am capable of mastering upper-level biology classes such as Human Gross Anatomy and Histology and to prepare for my future study in dental school. During my master’s study at Mississippi College, I was able to excel in my classes by developing a strict lifestyle through time management in order to maximize time for studies. My success at Mississippi College gave me confidence that I could be successful in any dental schools.
Furthermore, I joined the post-baccalaureate program at Temple Dental School that provides a dental-related curriculum in order to become even more prepared for the challenge of dental school. In addition, I am now NELDA certified a dental assistant and will assist the dental students in the clinic. All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved going to the dentist. I was never scared, not even when I went for my fillings and wisdom teeth extractions. Mostly all the hygienist I have had so far have been friendly, patient and always ready to help with a big smile on their face and that is what attracted me towards this career. I want to help people in need that cannot afford the services.
To be honest my initial inspiration to take the dental therapy and hygienist course was from my mother, who would say ‘If more people had healthy teeth, more people would smile’.For me this statement was a turning point ,as it lead me to wondering that maybe the lack of clean and healthy teeth , is actually the prime reason to why many of us today do not smile enough , causing less unity between the people in our society. A traumatic swimming incident during my childhood left me visiting many dental chairs where I suffered from an irrational fear of dentists. Every visit started with my fears but ended with my gratitude to these dentists, who had performed complex operations seamlessly. I can remember being a little boy sitting at the piano in church, listening to the preacher talk of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, which symbolizes the idea that we are here to serve. At CADH, I was taught how to act upon the eight competencies in different aspects for the public. As a clinician I was taught how to apply the dental hygiene process of care; assessing signs and symptoms, as well as risks factors related to oral disease, and then make a diagnosis, plan, implement, and evaluate the treatment within the dental hygiene scope of practice. After 12 hours of surgery, assisting in a large operation for a young guy with "Treacher Collins syndrome". It was aw-inspiring how the team of OMS approached the patient, constructing his orbits, grafting and correcting his dentofacial deformity. I feel that my love for arts, such as painting, sketching, sewing, and playing the piano will help to make me a great dentist, as these hobbies have helped to perfect my fine motor skills.
