Short stories are full of action and adventure. They are intriguing, and catch the liking of the reader. They are unique in their own way, and extraordinary to read. However, some short stories have similarities. The Machine that Won the War and the Interlopers are two stories that can be compared, and contrasted, to show their true meaning, and how they can relate to each other. Every story known has a conflict. These two stories are alike, in the length of the conflict. Both the conflicts within these stories are long lasting, and have been going on for years. In The Machine that Won the War, the conflict was between the Denebians and the human race. Lamar Swift, one of the main characters in this story states, “I'll miss it …show more content…
It's hard to remember when we weren't at war with Denebians, and it seems against nature now to be at peace and to look at the stars without anxiety.” Showing that they had been at war with the Denebians for a long time. The conflict in The Interlopers, is long lasting as well. It is said in the interlude of the story, “A famous lawsuit, in the days of his grandfather, had wrested it from the illegal possession of a neighboring family of petty landowners; the dispossessed party had never acquiesced in the judgment of the courts, and a long series of poaching affrays and similar scandals had embittered the relationships between the families for three generations.”. Both these stories have long lasting conflicts, and that is one of their many similarities. Now other than a conflict, a story needs a good antagonist. These two stories have antagonists, but the types of villain in these stories are very different. In The Interlopers, the two neighbors, Georg and Ulrich are enemies, fighting over a forest. They meet in the forest to fight, but during this feud a terrible tragedy occurs.” And before the moment of hesitation had given way to action, a deed of Nature’s own violence overwhelmed them both. A fierce shriek of the
The short story and the film have the same plots and the same conflict ...
Though the similarities in the most obvious conflicts, those between Anderton and Kaplan, the protagonist and antagonist, and fate remain intact, it is obvious that Philip Dick's story has been expanded upon and the main characters made to fit the "big screen". Both stories, however, address the contradictions and repercussions of trying to encourage free will and safety in an ultimately predetermined setting, the basic moral conflict of destroying what is meant to represent a utopian security, as well as the issue of trading freedom for protection.
Conflict is the hurdle between characters of a story which create worries for the readers about the next plot of that story and which will be resolved in the next plot. Children’s literature can only engage the reader and make the story successful on the basis of conflict. Conflict produces the drama and which makes their readers more involved in that story. I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.
Grasping the fact that, "each has a rifle in his hand, each has hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind" (Saki 1). The struggles both characters face demonstrate character development and contribute to the themes of the stories. For thousands of years the kingdoms lived in peace. Until one day there was an argument between the kings ,so both kingdoms went to war. The war waged on for years and years to come.
