“Romeo and Juliet” and “Othello” are both fantastic plays written by the one and only Shakespeare. They have their similarities, but they also have their differences. Theme, mood, tone, plot, setting, big idea, problem. These are just some of the many things that can be compared and contrasted between the two pieces of literature.

Obviously, one of the main similarities between the plays is the setting. They both took place around 400 years ago, somewhere in Italy. ROmeo and Juliet in Verona. Othello in Venice. Another one of the main similarities is the plot line. In both plays, two people fall in love but end up killing themselves because their lover is dead. For example, in scene 8, when Othello realizes that Desdemona is dead but should not have died, he kills himself out of grief. In act 5 of “Romeo and Juliet”, Romeo kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead, but when Juliet awakens and finds ROmeo dead, she stabs herself. One of the main differences is the theme. In “Romeo and Juliet”, one of the themes is love shines through. Throughout the play, the reader can clearly see that Romeo and Juliet will do anything for each other, and their love shines through all the anger around them. Opposingly, in “Othello”, Othello lets his anger towards Desdemona outshine his love for her. An additional difference is the mood of the play, or what the reader feels while reading the play. The mood of “Othello” is very dark, dreary, and depressing. On the other hand, even though the mood of “Romeo and Juliet” can be very sad, most of the time is is happy.
