In Night by Elie Wiesel, the plot follows a young Jewish boy and the hardships that the Jews faced in the Holocaust. In Harrison Begerson by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, the government has given everyone handicaps to make everyone equal, with a special person who rebelled. Both stories emphasize the idea that the human being is resilient even in the face of overwhelming adversity. In the story Night, the author uses the plot to develop the theme by letting the readers see the immense adversity Elie faced and his struggles to overcome them while also characterizing the Jews as resilient through hardships they faced. This further built onto the theme showing how even though the government tried weighing him down, Harrison overcame all of the handicaps and stood up against the leaders, highlighting human resilience in the face of adversity. Both of the stories in Night and Harrison Begerson take place wherein their culture there is an over controlling government (Dictatorship) where the citizens have little to no power influencing the theme by highlighting how the people stayed resilient in the overwhelming adversities such as a dictating government. Night takes place in World War II where the German Government (Nazis) discriminated against the Jews leading to the Holocaust. As Elie was forced out of his home and arrived in the concentration camp Auschwitz, a man told him that although he will face “a long path of suffering” he should muster his strength and “don’t lose hope,” (Wiesel 41). This represents how even though the government moved them to concentration camps where they awaited certain death, they clung to hope and stood strong with resilience and held onto the thought of hope even though the Nazis held overwhelming power over
