A character’s personality and goals greatly affect the play and the plot of the story. The plays A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller both have unique characters that develop the plot. They are both based on the main character, the father of the family. In A Raisin of the Sun, the story is based on the father of the Younger family, Walter Lee Younger. In Death of a Salesman, Willy is the father that the plot is based around. Both Walter Lee Younger and Willy are striving to be successful in the play and are focused on providing for their family. Walter Lee Younger has to battle poverty to provide for his family. Walter, a chauffeur, dreams of money and success. He wants to break free from his white employer and start his own business. Walter is determined to provide a new life for his wife Ruth and his son Travis. He wants to be the ultimate father and provider. Walter says to Ruth, “You tired, ain’t you? Tired of everything. Me, the boy, the way we live-- the way we live-- everything. Ain’t you?” (Hansberry 8-9). Poverty is even driving Walter from his wife Ruth as well. He is so determined for success that he invests his mother’s money, all they had, into someone to start his business and then gets scammed. This love for their families is what drives both characters to seek success in these plays. Willy loves his sons and wants the absolute best for them. He loves them so much that he doesn’t want to travel away from them for work. Willy says, “They don’t need me in New York. I’m the New England man, I’m vital in New England” (Miller 6). Walter also loves his family immensely and wants the best for his son. He wants to look like a great father in front of his son and wife as well.
