The films Falling Down by Joel Schumacher and Birdman by Alejandro González Iñárritu when analysed show many similarities in their character personalities but have different strategies of development. When analysed further both show a strong resemblance in how the director portrays his purpose and meaning using different techniques and symbols. Falling Down follows main character Bill Foster ‘D-fens’ as he tries to find his way home after losing his job to fix his abusive relationship with his wife and daughter. Birdman follows main character Riggan Thomson who is mounting a broadway production in hopes to breath new life into his stagnant career and prove he is a real artist and not just a celebrity. All while he deals with his girlfriend, …show more content…
In Falling Down the symbols are quite noticeable from the first scene onwards. Each close up view in the first scene have a stronger meaning behind them than first observed. An example of this is the bumper sticker “How am I driving? Call 1-800- EAT SHIT” representing the attitude of society. Throughout the film the American rights of freedom and patriotism show up repeatedly in purposely placed flags. This along with christ and religion which is alluded to by crosses and churches in the background of many scenes. This represents D-fens believing he is sacrificing himself for the good of other people trying to take back their civil rights. The Birdman is purposely likened to Icarus from Greek Mythology. Icarus was given a pair of wax wings by his father Daedalus to escape the imprisonment of his father’s invention and was warned if he flew too close to the sun they would melt. Icarus was ecstatic with his new wings and forgot his father's warning and the wings became loose and Icarus plummeted to his death. When Riggan is in his own reality flying we see what appears to look like a meteor falling from the sky. This represents the story of Icarus and compares the son of Daedalus to Riggan. Though not always noticed everything the directors do in both of these films have stronger meanings and are a part of developing the character and plot
In chapter 15 from Thomas C. Fosters’ How to Read Literature Like A Professor, flight is discussed to represent multiple forms of freedom and escape, or possible failure and downfall. Throughout J. D. Salingers’ novel, The Catcher and the Rye, Holden often finds himself wondering where the ducks in the Central Park pond have flown off to due to the water freezing over. On the other hand, the ducks are symbolic of Holden are his interest in the ducks an example of Foster’s ideas that flight represents a desire to be free.
In the passage “Icarus and Daedalus” and in the poem, “Icarus” nature plays a big role. In both, the passage and the poem the son, Icarus, was stuck on an island and the father ,Daedalus, made his son wings. Daedalus made his son the wings out of wax and feathers, when Icarus was flying he flew too close to the sun and the wings started to melt because of the heat from the sun. The feathers started to fall down one by one and no one was there to save Icarus. In both, the passage and the poem nature plays a big role.
It gave Perry hope that things would improve, especially when he was in the orphanages he was abused in. And when the flashlight broke, she went on hitting him in the dark, that the parrot appeared, arrived while he slept, a bird "taller than Jesus, yellow like a sunflower," a warrior-angel who blinded nuns with its beak, fed upon their eyes, slaughtered them as they "pleaded for mercy," then so gently lifted him, enfolded him, winged him away to "paradise,’ (58). Capote also compares this bird to Jesus Christ, who, according to Foster, is often used by authors to make a certain point (Foster 132). In this case, it adds allusion to the fact that the bird is Perry’s savior. Another symbol that can be found in In Cold Blood is the Clutter family itself. The Clutter Family represents American values, and achieving the American dream. The family was a successful, popular and particularly “Christian” group of people. But despite their successes and their social standing, evil was still able to conquer them and destroy the ideal image of the “perfect family”. “In brief, Nye learned only this: ‘Of all the people in the world, the
The birds show symbolism in more than one way throughout the text. As the soldiers are travelling from all over the world to fight for their countries in the war, the birds are similarly migrating for the change of seasons. The birds however, will all be returning, and many of the soldiers will never return home again. This is a very powerful message, which helps the reader to understand the loss and sorrow that is experienced through war.
Denotatively a bird is defined as a, Any of a class (Aves) of warm-blooded vertebrates distinguished by having the body more or less completely covered with feathers and the forelimbs modified as wings, often capable of flying. The authors/Glaspell’s strategic comparison of Mrs. Wright to a bird can be interpreted connotatively that she was a free,
Rowland, Beryl. Birds With Human Souls, A Guide to Bird Symbolism. Knoxville: U of Tennessee P, 1978.
Symbolism is a symbol of whatever the object or subject is about. Every little object can be used as a symbol of whatever. Like in math, for example shapes and numbers symbolize anything it can be. He gave us the air, the bird, our son”(57). Flying is Guy’s escape from poverty. He wants to free himself from the constant hunger and instability because he wants his son to have a life without those hardships. The air, the bird, and Little Guy are sources of beauty and hope for Guy. Guy believes God gave the world hope as motivation to reach freedom.
In “Everyday Use” Alice Walker used symbolism throughout the story. Symbolism is an object that has a special meaning for person. The images related to birds are the major symbolic images in the narrative from the very beginning of the novel:
A set of practices concerning the narrative structure compose the classical Hollywood Paradigm. These conventions create a plot centering around a character who undergoes a journey in an attempt to achieve some type of goal (). By giving the central character more time on screen, the film helps the audience to not only understand the character’s motivation but also empathize with his/her emotional state. Additionally, some antagonistic force creates conflict with the main character, preventing immediate success(). Finally, after confronting the antagonist, the main character achieves his or her goal along with growing emotionally(). This proven structure creates a linear and relatively easily followed series of events encompassing the leading character and a goal.
Each of these films, with release dates ranging from 1976 to 1996 (Taxi Driver and Trainspotting, respectively), have the same, eerily similar structure. This goes for more than just film. Any art form that contains narrative contains examples of this same monomyth structure, and film and literature alike will never cease in producing works that fit this structure. This is because, as previously stated, storytelling and mythology are integral parts of all human culture. They can show us the darkness that lies in wait for us, threatening to corrupt us, thus protecting us from it. Narrative, in this sense, acts as an instruction booklet for life.
Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a fantastic film that combines seemingly disparate ideas into a coherent theme and narrative. The theme that seems so prevalent in the film is the struggle to move on and find love and admiration. The movie tries to understand this struggle by asking the question of what defines art and whether Hollywood-like spectacle approach to art is a good thing. The film also faces the viewer with the internal conflict that these characters face when having two types of personalities on and off the stage. The movie conveys this theme through its use of cinematography, acting and production design.
scorched paper, I grieved for my father as though he had just died.” Another symbol of trying to escape for freedom. However, this is all a contrast to what birds actually do. represent in real life. Birds are a part of a class of animals that have the ability to roam.
Another large symbol is Gambino’s posing, strange movements, and dramatic facial expressions throughout the video. This was a symbol that was inspired by the minstrel character Jim Crow, the origin of the term used to describe pre-Civil-rights-era segregation laws. A great example of this portrayal is when Gambino shoots the guitarist with the bag on his head. While it isn’t clearly explained as to why the guitarist has a bag on his head, I think it is to hide the man’s dying face, as this can usually become pretty gruesome to look at, especially with a shot to the back of the head. Another large symbol is throughout the video, when Gambino’s character periodically murders innocent performers in the video; especially the choir.
