James Town and the Plymouth Plantation
Jamestown and the Plymouth plantation were two settlements that embarked on dangerous four month voyage to the “New World” known as the united states of america. They were two very distinct colonies who embarked on the voyage for different reasons. They were also one of the first colonies to settle in the United States . Aside that they had two very distinct leaders Captain John Smith and Plymouth , thus they were both English leaders , Captain john smith came in hopes of becoming rich and plymouth came for religious reasons , in hopes to have religious freedom and worship. The in the short stories both it display an idea of who and what both leaders were like simply by the style of their writing and

the way they unveil themselves as they record how they are settling and growing in the new world along with the native americans. The plymouth plantation was a settlement lead by William Bradford.
William engaged on the long voyage in hopes to have repoint freedom and worship . William and his people were puritans . Puritans are an English group of protester who sought to simplify and regulate forms of worship apart of the Church of the English church under Queen Elizabeth. William Bradford was a different type of leader than that of Captain john smith. His people were family oriented and not selfish amongst his people and native americans. On page 17 they display their brotherly bond as they went through hardships staying alive in the new world “in a word, did all the homely and necessary offices for them which dainty and queasy stomachs cannot endure to hear named; and all willingly and cheerfully , without any grudging in the least, showing herein their true love unto their friends and brethren; a rare example and worthy to be remembered”. Plymouth encounters with native americans was a success for them because they did not use violence against them instead they spoke and soon the natives became a huge instrument that helped them establish and grow their plantation . On page 18 it indicates the plymouth was deeply grateful for the native americans who helped them “Squanto continued with them as was their interpreter and was a special instrument sent of God for their good beyond expectation.” Plymouth's plantation was a settlement brought up with the help of their belief and the support of native …show more content…
americans. Jamestown was a colony lead by Captain john smith was focused on making money off the new world which was his main purpose too he embarked on a long journey too what is known as America.
Thus as read on the short story ẗhe Generall history of Virginia he displays himself as a self centered leader according to the evidence. His colony was lead very directly of that of Plymouth plantation. James brought along mostly men who mimicked his characteristic and followed him , he was the leader. In the short story ¨The generall history of Virginia John Smith¨, speaks of himself in third person which displays that he was full of himself along with his men. James and his men were new to the land and needed to establish strong colony but weak weak from the voyage there for they used the native Americans Guidance. On page 73 john smith describes his estimation amongst the native americans ,¨Yet he demanded himself amongst them , as he not only diverted them from surprising the fort , but procured his own liberty and got himself and his company such estimated amount them , that savages admired him.¨ james as a leader showed himself as a selfish man displayed on page CR4 the new and martin being little beloved, weak of judgment in dangers , and less industry in peace , committed the ,managing of all things aboard to captain smith , who , by his own example , good words and fair promises , set some to mow , others to bind thatch some to build houses others to thatch them, himself bearing
the greatest task for his own share , so that short time provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himself .” this page written by himself indicates that his accomplishments re himself and himself only for his own good. Initially captain john smith did not have a good relations with the native american as the plymouth plantation di and did not have the same family oriented environment. Though both colonies were distic they had their similarities . The plymouth plantation along with the jamestown settlement were both weak at the beginning of their establishments. The voyage alone was harsh for both ecolines who came in hopes to fulfil their dreams in the new work known as north America. The voyage was long and dreadful many starved and got sick on the way their. When they arrived both did not have support from anyone. Bradford wrote “being the depth of winter and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with surcy and other diseases which this long voyage and their accomodate condition and had brought upon them.” , he goes on , “ so they died sometimes two or three a day”. They were so weak they hardly had any food or shelter which starting causing deaths from diseases and starvation among the two colonies. On page Cr4 james explains their hardships with little food, “with the lodging and diet, our extreme toil in bearing and planting palisades so strained and bruised us and our continual labour in extremity heat had so weakened us.” Both did not have the most pleasant first encounters with the native americans which made it difficult because they felt as they could be attacked at any moment. The most abundant reason thus , their colonies established and grew were because the native american helped the, greatly. Both settlements embarked on a journey to the “New World” in hopes to expand their dreams. Initially they both had many hardships to overcome but both became on of the first English settlements to touch ground in North America. Captain john smith and Bradford both wrote and recorded about their experience as they were establishing their colonies. There for now we have the opportunity to analyze through their text these two colonies and their differences and similarities.
These Puritans were strongly opposed to the church of England. They felt that the church had become corrupt and defiled because of the idolatrous worship. They began to meet in secret until one day they were discovered. Among these was Wilford Bradford, a young man who joined the Pilgrims religious group. In later chapters we see an older Bradford becomes Governor of the Plymouth colony who is also student of the Hebrew language;for he believed that he would achieve a stronger connection with God. Very early in his life, Bradford read the Bible and sought to please God and he believed that the best way to do this would be to separate from the church of
Because of his restlessness in England, Smith became actively involved with plans to colonize Virginia, which had been granted a charter from King James I. After setting sail, this famous expedition finally reached Virginia in April, after enduring a lengthy voyage of over four months in three tiny ships. John Smith was one of the seven chosen to govern and start the colony. He took a...
Things in Jamestown were good. The people were fed, cared for, and happy. They created their own working government order, but, in a place where everything seems perfect, there is always one man to disagree. In this case, his name was Nathaniel Bacon.
The Virginia Company was granted a charter by King James the 1st to travel to North America mainly to find gold; but also to engage in “glassblowing, silk raising, winemaking and exploring the rivers” (C&G 28) in addition to trying to find a water route to the Orient ("History of Jamestown"). The company neglected to take into account that farming would be a necessary requirement. In choosing who to send on the expedition, gentlemen from the upper class were selected along with a small group of artisans, craftsmen and laborers (C&G 27). This was one of many mistakes that paved the road on the way to the eventual failure of the venture; the people selected were ill-equipped to deal with the elements and hardships they faced upon their arrival. The leaders were unaccustomed to hard work and lacked the organizational skills required to survive and thrive in the new environment. They also lacked the diplomatic skills required to deal with the Powhatan Native American’s they encountered. Faced with the very real possibility of losing their lands and facing the potential extinction of their peo...
In the early stages of North American colonization by the English, the colony of Jamestown, Virginia was founded in 1607 (Mailer Handout 1 (6)). Soon after the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1629 (Mailer Handout 2 (1)). These two colonies, although close in the time they were founded, have many differences in aspects of their lives and the way they were settled. The colonies have a different religious system, economic system, political system, and they have a different way of doing things; whether that be pertaining to making money, practicing religion, or electing governors. Along with the differences, there are also a sameness between these two colonies. Each colony has been derived from England and has been founded by companies
The Jamestown and Plymouth settlements were both settled in the early 1600's. Plymouth and Jamestown were located along the shoreline in Massachusetts and Virginia, respectively. Although both had different forms of government, they both had strong leadership. Jamestown was controlled by the London Company, who wanted to profit from the venture, while the Puritans who settled at Plymouth were self-governed with an early form of democracy and settled in the New World to gain religious freedom. John Smith took charge in efforts to organize Jamestown, and at Plymouth William Bradford helped things run smoothly.
America, it has always had everything we need, except for when colonists flocked in the early 1600´s. Its 1609, you and a group of people have been on a boat for months. Now you aren't even sure if the America's exist. But once you lost every single drop of hope, you see it. A beautiful swampy land. This place makes you feel like you have a lot of opportunities, there’s a river, a lot of wildlife, and not that many Native’s around. It seems perfect, that’s what people that saw posters of Jamestown thought in England. Jamestown seemed, perfect, appeared perfect…
In the very beginning of the movie, you can already see two differences. For starters in the movie, John Smith was tall and blond, however, in real life, he was short, red-headed, and had a red bushy beard. You can see in my cover that he looks nothing like the John Smith in the movie. Also, another thing that you notice very early on is that they are only traveling to Jamestown in one ship. When actually they came to Jamestown in three ships: the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. My cover shows the replicas of the three ships in Virginia.
The Chesapeake region of the colonies included Virginia, Maryland, the New Jerseys (both East and West) and Pennsylvania. In 1607, Jamestown, the first English colony in the New World (that is, the first to thrive and prosper), was founded by a group of 104 settlers to a peninsula along the James River. These settlers hoped to find gold, silver, a northwest passage to Asia, a cure for syphilis, or any other valuables they might take back to Europe and make a profit. Lead by Captain John Smith, who "outmaneuvered other members of the colony's ruling and took ruthlessly took charge" (Liberty Equality Power, p. 57), a few lucky members of the original voyage survived. These survivors turned to the local Powhatan Indians, who taught them the process of corn- and tobacco-growing. These staple-crops flourished throughout all five of these colonies.
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans, and the English (textbook 44-5). Economic growth and expanding their territories were the main priorities of the English in the Jamestown colonies.
William Bradford said he believed, “Plymouth people were the chosen people to live out their last days in the earthly church” (Daly pg 560). Puritan settlers came to the new world seeking a better life and to get away from the rule of the Catholic Church they wanted to become a primitive Baptist church like in the Old Testament. The Puritans wanted to live their lives in Old Testament biblical way of life; when the settlers came to the, “New England they thought they had landed in God’s country” (Callicott). They thought they were the chosen ones the new Israelites.
While residing in England, the Puritans and faithful Catholics faced prosecution, which led to their immigration to the New World. Most left England to avoid further harassment. Many groups and parishes applied for charters to America and, led by faithful ministers, the Pilgrims and Puritans made the long voyage to North America. Their religion became a unique element in the New England colonies by 1700. Before landing, the groups settled on agreements, signing laws and compacts to ensure a community effort towards survival when they came to shore, settling in New England. Their strong sense of community and faith in God led them to develop a hardworking society by year 1700, which Documents A and D express through the explanation of how the Pilgrims and Puritans plan to develop...
Massachusetts's inhabitants were Puritans who believed in predestination and the ideal that God is perfect. Many Puritans in England were persecuted for their nihilist beliefs in England because they felt that the Church of England, led by the Kind, did not enforce a literal enough interpretation of the Bible. Persecution punishment included jail and even execution. To seek refuge, they separated to go to Holland because of its proximity, lower cost, and safer passage. However, their lives in Holland were much different than that of England. The Separatists did not rebel against but rather preferred the English culture. They did not want their children to be raised Dutch. Also, they felt that Holland was too liberal. Although they enjoyed the freedom of religion, they decided to leave for America. Pilgrims, or sojourners, left for America on The Mayflower and landed in Cape Cod in 1626. They had missed their destination, Jamestown. Although the climate was extremely rocky, they did not want to move south because of their Puritan beliefs. They thought that everything was predestined, and that they must have landed on this rocky place for a reason. They moved slightly north to Plymouth Rock in order to survive more comfortably. Also because of their Puritan beliefs, they had good relations with the Native Americans. Their pacifist nature led the Indians to help with their crops. In thanks, the Pilgrims celebrated the first thanksgiving in 1621. A second group of Puritans in England, the Massachusetts Bay Company, came to Massachusetts for more economically motivated purposes due to their non-minimalist beliefs.
Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford and A Description of New England by John Smith are essentially irrelevant to one another in the way that each piece has a very different point of view. The author John Smith was a pilgrim who arrived in the Americas and wrote a description of the new land. William Bradford was also a pilgrim who arrived at Plymouth and wrote more about the realities of his personal journey. The purpose of this essay is to contrast the purposes of the writers, their intended audiences, and how each writer gives out a specific feeling.
The 1995 Disney film of Pocahontas is, unsurprisingly, not a good source for citation for colonial research. It is predictably inaccurate in the description of the real life characters, the turn of events and also in the depiction of Jamestown. But it is a movie. In actuality Pocahontas did not have a romantic attachment to Captain Smith (nor a hot tempered hummingbird friend) and Captain Smith was not even a likable person. The farthest stretch in the movie however was about the representation of Jamestown. Jamestown was the first English settlement in the colony of Virginia however it struggled to survive for quite a while and many people died in the process. This was due to a large number of the settlers there simply not working. As a result
