We see it show up in pop culture and it is so apparent in pop culture because it is relatable. The Social Network is a movie that tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created facebook. One scene in the movie shows Eduardo Saverin’s, the CFO of facebook, relationship status says single and his girlfriend starts a fire in his bedroom because of this (Fincher 2010). Her self-esteem was lowered by the fact that her boyfriend’s relationship status was single and this made her feel so bad that she wanted to get back at him by starting a fire in his apartment. That is clearly not logical thinking. If there wasn’t a social media site she wouldn’t have started a fire over something so trivial. Ingrid Michaelson wrote a song called Twitter Song. In this song we are able to see how social media can give a false sense of connection, “Where do I go when I don 't have a friend? Where do I go at another day 's end? Nobody loves me, somebody loves me on...Twitter! I think I 'm a big big loser. Then I go to my computer, Turn it on, and I feel grand, All because of...Twitter!” (Michaelson, 2009). Currently, social media plays a significant role in our everyday lives and the way people in society interacts with one another. A few years ago, before its influence reached the point where it is now, the large platforms such as Facebook or Twitter which function was merely to keep family and friends connected no matter where they were or what they were doing, and the requirements were an internet connection and a smart phone or a computer. People would share pictures or posts to keep others “updated” on their lives and what they were thinking. Now social media platforms are far more complicated. In various of them, such as Instagram or Snapchat, it is not enough to only share a picture or video of your day, but it is almost a requirement and people are pushed to take an extra mile further away and make yourself appear interesting in the eyes of others. Many people may argue the fact that social media has increased the efficiency of the way we conduct business. However, like most things there is always a negative side; the very existence of these social platforms such as “Facebook” has brought about a desensitized society. I am not disputing the fact that social media has brought about a positive, yet momentous impact on the way we live today, but people have gotten so used to their use that we have personally stopped interacting with each other physically.
