A career in the medical field has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I am passionate about putting others before myself, cultivating relationships, giving to others, and developing skills that will help me make a difference. After job shadowing a pharmacist for the first time, I saw all of these traits implemented in his practice and immediately knew pharmacy was the profession for me. I have always been eager to learn more about math and science and enjoyed taking challenging classes in these areas. Pharmacy is an ideal profession as it covers a wide range of mathematics and science courses. After high school graduation, I obtained my pharmacy technician license and began work at a local retail pharmacy. After the first day of work, I knew I had chosen the right path for my future career. I felt a sense of pride knowing we made a difference in someone’s life by assisting the person with their medication and comforting them by answering any questions/concerns, so they may get well or maintain their health safety. In February of 2016, I became a volunteer at the University Hospital in the inpatient pharmacy. This wonderful opportunity has allowed me to visit with other pharmacy students and pharmacists who discussed their role and how they reached their status. I realize now how broad the pharmacy profession can be. Currently, I am a pharmacy technician at the University Hospital where I continue to learn new skills, such as: efficiently operate the electronic medical records, prepare medications, navigate the hospital, and effectively communicate with nurses, pharmacists, and other hospital employees. I became a volunteer at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center where I was paired with a horse, rider, and two side-walkers. Patients varied in age and disabilities; my rider was a middle aged male with mobile and communication disorders, and as a leader my job was to be his companion and ensure his safety. I enjoyed seeing him grow and learn new maneuvers each day, meeting incredible people and building friendships that will never be forgotten. Due to a scheduling conflict, I wasn’t able to volunteer there the subsequent semester. However, I became a volunteer at the University Hospital where I became employed in May. In July I became a volunteer at Adult Day Connection where I continue to build communication skills and relationships that could change a life someday, and facilitate in the achievement of my immediate and long-term
