Different Interpretations of Love in The Great Gatsby
Almost every character in The Great Gatsby claimed to be in love with someone. While reading the novel, one may begin to question the authenticity of any of the characters feelings. Each character seems to interpret love in a completely different way. It makes one wonder if any of the characters have any idea of what love really is.
A prime example of this unique observation is Tom. He seems to think love is more of a controlling, dominating feeling. He doesn’t do much loving and nurturing for either of his women. He cheats on his wife, and beats his mistress. If he truly loves either of them, he sure has a bizarre way of showing it. He likes being able to control Daisy the way he does, and he loves having Myrtle obey him because of his money. It seems he loves controlling them, not being with them.
Another example is Myrtle. She obviously does not love her husband or she wouldn’t be cheating on him, and trying to leave him. She has two men in her life. One who tries his best to provide for her with his meager earnings, but does love her. The other is powerful, prestigious, and wealthy, but breaks her nose. The choice here would be obvious for someone else, but Myrtle takes the alternate route. She chooses the rich man who beats her over her husband who does his best to care for her. There seems to be an ulterior motive behind this decision. Perhaps she doesn’t "love" Tom after all. Perhaps she loves his money.
Daisy is yet another character seemingly confused by love. When she was only seventeen she fell in love with a young Gatsby. She left him because he was not wealthy enough for her blood. She later married another man who is wealthy. Several years later when Gatsby comes back into Daisy’s life she is ready to leave her husband. It seems odd that if he wasn’t good enough for her when she was a girl, that he suddenly would be now that she is a grown woman with a husband and child. Could it be perhaps because he is now just as wealthy, or even more so, than her husband. It is a distinct possibility Daisy is mistaking her love for money, for love for Gatsby.

Daisy is living under the illusion that Gatsby has become rich and successful by working so hard and getting lucky with some investments. I think that when she first met him she probably did love him. He conveyed something to her that was the complete opposite of what she was: a poor soldier that did not have the social class that she possessed. But now her attitudes have changed and she is attracted to him because of his money and his apparent success.

Malcolm grew up in Lansing Michigan on a farm majority of his life. Malcolms life of crime started when he began stealing goods for his family. He felt the need to due to his family being so poor. Malcolm lived with his mother Mrs. Little, who was not so stable herself. She was bombarded by bills and tax collectors that eventually led her to go into depression and have extreme anxiety. She later became so bad that she was admitted to the mental Institute and Malcolm was now a child of the state. This was his first true resentment towards white authorities after he blamed them for the detention of Mrs. Little and being a child of the state.
He begins to live a different type of lifestyle and comes out of his shell. First Malcolm discovers the nightlife of Roxbury and he begins attending lindy hops. His partying eventually leads him to drug abuse, hustling, an interracial relationship with a white woman, and burglary. He was going down the wrong path and was ironically becoming the stereotypical black man who found himself living a life of crime. He became a shadow of his former self “he has no religion, no concept of morality, no civic responsibility, no fear--no nothing” (pg.
Malcolm X had an interesting childhood that ended up shaping how he would end up as an adult. Malcolm had a very large family, he was one of eight children. His mothers’ name was Louise Norton Little. She was a stay at home mom and cared for her children. His father, Earl Little, was a very outspoken Baptist minister and an avid supporter of the Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. This is where his life started to get interesting. Earl's civil rights activism prompted death threats from the white supremacist organization Black Legion, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday. ( www.malcolmx.com p 1). Earl wanted nothing to do with violence and wanted to keep his family safe from harm. He tried to put as much distance between him and the Black Legion. Despite his efforts to elude the Legion, in 1929, their home in Lansing, Michigan, was burned to the ground. Two years later, Earl's body was found lying across the town's trolley tracks (www.malcolmx.com p 1). Ms. Blakemore's thesis on adolescent development sheds light on some of the nonsensical decision making in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as characters certainly face the self consciousness, emotions and impulse control she describes.
Because of their antics, the law was on their trail. They eventually caught and sent to prison. Malcolm was sentenced to 8 years in prison while Sophia was only sentenced to 2 years because she was white. This relates to the social organization of arrest, which suggest that police arrest blacks at a higher rate than whites. While Malcolm was in jail, he was well known to the guards. One time he was asked to state his number, but instead he said he forgot his number.
Malcolm X was known by many different names. The first Malcolm Little, his birth name, and who identified with a young man growing up in America would fuel his passion for racial politics. From the jump, Malcolm had the cards placed against him. His father Earl Little “was a Baptist minister” and “a dedicated organizer for Marcus Garvey’s U.NI.I.A.” (pg. 1). It was along with this that the Ku Klux Klan was intimidating Earl Little and his family and the subsequent “alleged” murder of Earl Little by the Black Legion, that Malcolm’s life took a turn for the worst. His mother Louise had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized which led to Malcolm and his siblings becomes wards of the state. Given he’s grew up without the guidance or protection of parents he started getting into mischief out on the streets.
