Internet Addiction
People all over the world use the Internet. It is used as a tool to communicate, do research, or even watch the news. Too much dependence on the Internet can lead a person to suffer from Internet addiction. A very important tool has now become a drug and everyone cannot have enough of it. If it is not used properly it can affect you socially, emotionally, and psychologically. People who are addicted to the Internet are normally teenagers and adults. Some of the symptoms for this condition are: losing track of time, isolation from your friends and family, and having trouble completing important tasks.

What is addiction? Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of the brain reward and memory circuitry. Addiction is the inability to abstain consistently from a substance which leads to an impairment in behavioral control. This forms cravings, a diminished idea of significant problems with one’s behavior, and dysfunctional emotional responses (Definition of Addiction 2014. p 1). There are several different substances that a person can be addicted to: alcohol, drugs, food, sex, etc. These substances affect the neurotransmitters and interactions within the reward structures of the brain. Thus giving the person a pleasurable feeling that they want to recreate over and over again. Most people are not able to control the use of their desired substance of choice. They may continue using the substance despite knowing it is harmful. There are characteristic stages of abstinence and relapse. The abstinence stage is where the addicted person tries to quit using. Unfortunately most are not successful because it is almost too hard to quit on their own. This is followed by a relapse stage where they start using the substance again. Addiction can cause serious long-term consequences including issues with mental and physical health, relationships, employment and the law. To help a person overcome an addiction it may take help from a doctor, family, friends, support groups or an organized treatment program.
People often associate the word addiction with drugs and alcohol because they are the most common form of addictions. The word addiction is often misunderstood because people connects them with negative addictions that are compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance abuse. I believe that the term addiction is evolving because there are positive addictions that exists and can enhance your mood and well being. Addiction occurs with everybody, whether it is good or bad and it is part of life. My personal definition for addiction is forming a habit due to physical or mental needs causing to change a mood.
Although the internet can be advantageous, the experience some may have on the internet can alter people's lives mentally and emotionally. "Teens might be online because they are already depressed, anxious, and lonely. Or they might become so, if forced to give up their habit. Signs and symptoms of withdrawal anxiety in a child include difficulty concentrating, pacing, irritable and stressed mood, and fidgeting" (Source 1). Plenty of teens online can be unquestionably impolite to one another.
"Addiction" as defined by Webster's New World Dictionary is "the condition of being addicted (to a habit) or of being an addict." "Addict," on the other hand, is defined as one who has given oneself up to some strong habit. Some may say that being addicted to using the Internet is not a "true" addiction, but according to the Webster definition, Internet addiction can be and is every bit as real and as hard to manage as a drug or alcohol addiction.
Technology has a significant part in social and educational life of teens and it makes parents and experts think how teenagers become that addicted to technology today. The change in the social life of children and young generation causes to research upon technology’s usage of young people. This 24/7 online, connected community is actually a place for escaping from stress and bad emotions. The countless facilities and alternatives of virtual world attract the attention of many teens.
Technology has advance so much since the old days. We see technology everywhere but one major thing that has change since back then into now has been the internet usage. Believe it or not internet is being used everywhere. First, it was used in desktops now is on laptops, cellphones, and tablets and even on TV and Video games. Internet, is very bad for society but three major reasons why is bad is due to many deaths, creating health issues, and bullying.
In Greg Beato’s article “Internet Addiction” originally published in august, september 2010 in to Reason magazine he argues that internet addiction is a problem in our society today. Internet addiction should be reported in the Diagnostic and statistic manual of mental disorder (DSM). It is a huge problem, he also says that internet is like narcotic drugs and very addicting. He states that if ones use Google for few minutes only it leads us to spend more than a few minutes on the internet and it turns in to spending hours. Beato refers that University of Maryland did a group study for 24 hour and all the students went crazy without their phones and iPods, one girl admitted that she is an addict. The students were anxious and miserable. He also says that one kid killed his parents because they took away his Xbox. Internet also leads to death of people, therefore it is a problem and we should put it on to the DSM.
One argument is that the internet is not the addiction, but is a medium to the addiction. The other argument is that the internet itself is the addictive substance. The argument that has the most support and is more believable in the research that it does is that the internet itself is the addiction. This makes sense for multiple reasons. One of the reasons is that some of the addictions on the internet are not possible to be addicted to without the internet. Another reason is that people also need information, and people can get addicted to the internet because they want the information. These are only some of the reasons why the internet should be considered an addictive substance. It is also important to know the difference between being addicted to the internet and being addicted to something on the internet. According to an article written in 2012 titled Internet addiction: how to fight it, it is two different ideas to be addicted to the internet and to be addicted to things such as online gambling and online sex. Abstract— This research examines three questions: Does Internet addiction really exist? If it does exist what criteria does one have to meet for them to be labeled as an Internet addict? And lastly an ethical evaluation of Internet addiction. The questions are explored by investigating the fundamentals of addiction (i.e., Compulsion, Obsession, living problems, lack of satisfaction) and then correlating them to excessive Internet use. This research concludes that whilst the concept of Internet addiction cannot be completely ruled out, the majority and most probable explanation when it comes to Internet addiction is that the Internet is being as a medium to engage in different types of addictions.

Computers have evolved the idea of social media from simple chat rooms to websites like Facebook or Twitter which allow someone to connect people to the world wide web. With all of these new trends, people begin to craze over the new inventions or creations in masses. People now just have to press a button and update their status or add a new picture. People who use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter show signs of addiction.
There are five types of internet addiction. The first is Net-Gaming. People with this addiction participate in online games, Multi User Dungeon Games (MUDs), will visit virtual casinos, and my become obsessed with e-auctions and online trading and shopping. Another type of internet addiction is Cyber-Relational Addiction. People with this tend to make chat room relationships more important than their relationships with family or friends. They may even try to meet someone personally after meeting him or her online. The third type of internet addiction is Information Overload. People become obsessed with tracking down certain information and organizing it.
This online article was useful for my research because it showed how over use of technology impact on people. This article also gives background information on internet addiction and internet dependence.
