My Father's Illness As a child, life was great for me. I spent my days being a hyperactive boy, running around and causing general chaos on my two sisters, Kelly and Libby. The world I lived in was a stress free world, I had not had many difficult experiences growing up. Life was beautiful for me, until a tragedy struck my family. My life got stressful on first day of second grade. I remember getting off the bus, eager to tell my parents all about what it felt like to be in second grade. As I walked in the door, I could feel that something was wrong. It was something in the air, a depressing mood. Instead of being greeted by a house of warm response, it was silent. I shouted for my parents and searched around, finally finding them in their bedroom. As I walked in to their bedroom, I found my mother sitting on the bed, weeping quietly, while my father lay on the bed in a near unconscious state. This sight shocked me, I had seen my father sick before, but by the reaction of my mother and the deathly look on my father’s face I knew that something was seriously wrong. My father's eyes opened, and he called out for my sister Kelly and I to come to him. In a very serious and sad voice, he told us that he was very sick, and he was going to the Fort Wayne hospital. My mother told Kelly and I to help her pack some things for him, because he was going to be leaving soon. We helped her pack, keeping quiet because we did not want to interrupt the silence that had taken over the room. A family friend, Rose Widmer, came over as my mom and dad were getting ready to leave. She would be staying with us because it looked like they would not be coming home that night. As Kelly and I were eating our supper, my mom came into the kitchen and sat down beside me. She explained to us that our dad was very sick, and that he was having trouble with his brain. She used the term "brain abscess." She said that this is what the doctors speculated was wrong with him, but they needed to go to Fort Wayne to take precautions.
When I walked inside the front door something didn’t seem right. The feeling of sorrow overwhelmed the house. It was so thick I could literally feel it in the air. Everyone was motionless. They were sulking;I was befuddled. The most energetic people in the world, doing absolutely nothing. I repeatedly asked them what was wrong. After an hour or so, my dad pulled me aside. He said that my Aunt Feli had passed away last night. My mind went for a loop, I was so confused. I thought that he was joking, so I replied “You’re lying, don’t mess with me like that.” and punched his shoulder softly while I chuckled. My dad quickly started tearing up and said, “There...
Months later, I woke up and walked down stairs to make my oats. I walked downstairs and was looking for my Father. I looked everywhere in the house before I noticed he was no-where to be found. Then I walked into the living room and saw my Mother. She was hysterical. Tears were running down her cheek like the Mississippi flowed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Cancer is a deadly disease that millions of people die from a year. Many loved ones are killed with little to no warning affecting families across our world. My family happened to be one that was affected by this atrocious disease. This event changed the way my family members and I viewed cancer.
It was just a normal day, or so I thought. After school, my guy friend and I went to the lake in Grenada in hopes to escape from reality. I remember the moment as if it happened yesterday. Around, my mother called me. Considering my mom rarely calls me, I already knew what was about to be said. When I answered the phone, all I could hear was crying. My mom could barely get her words out. After a few seconds of hearing her cry, she finally said those four words that I had been dreading for the past five months. “Aunt Patty has died,” my mom said. At this moment, I was at a loss for words. All I knew to do was to hang up the phone and cry. Thankfully my guy friend knew exactly what was said over the phone and allowed me to just sit there and cry. I might not have seen my aunt much during this terrible journey because of school and distance, but this news devastated me. I had never cried so much in my life, especially in front of
The current crisis in Ukraine can simply be coined as a war between the citizens wanting their country to be a liberal or an illiberal democracy. The Eastern Ukrainians, who have substantial amounts of influence from Russia, wish to support Russia and it’s illiberal democracy, it’s competitive authoritarian regime. The Western Ukrainians wish to join the European Union and their liberal democracies based on the foundation that the rights of the people will be preserved and that the citizens has influence in the government. The Western Ukrainians understand what it means to be part of Russia, history stemming back all the way to 1600s, and understand that it comes at the cost of Ukraine losing its identity. To understand the mindset of Western Ukrainians, one must first understand the history.
First, this essay will briefly summarise relevant historical factors. Second, it will discuss the Ukrainian position and its options following the violation of its sovereignty. Third, it explains Russia’s motivations for it’s anti-western actions and finally, we discuss European policy. This essay will argue that given historical and geopolitical factors, Crimea’s annexation is not entirely extraordinary. More extraordinary, is Russia’s dismissal of international laws and the sovereignty of the state. The Crimean predicament illustrates an ideological struggle between autocracy and the democratic Western world. It highlights the gap between liberalism and realism; particularly where the two systems try to operate in an entirely interdependent but anarchical world structure.
BlackBerry is a line of wireless handheld devices ¬designed and marketed by BlackBerry Limited, formerly known as Research In Motion Limited (RIM). The first BlackBerry device, an email pager, appeared on the market in 1999. (1) The two-way pager is almost never used anymore, which is a good demonstration of just how fast the technology has been developed. The pager was considered a novel product since most of handheld devices up until then had only one way communication. The original BlackBerry allowed the person who was receiving the message to respond to the sender by using a keypad.
According to Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and part of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services defines stress as “an organism's total response to environmental demands or pressures”. While people may experience the feeling of stress differently, it has been proven that everyone, at one time or another, will experience the mental and physical impact of stress first hand. It has been proven that stress in small doses can produce positive effects – pushing individuals to do better, motivating them to do their best, or even allowing them to stay focused and alert. Research also shows that some people cope with stress more effectively than others, but when the levels of stress exceed one’s ability to cop, stress can threaten one’s physical and emotional well-being. It's important to know your limits when it comes to stress, so you can avoid minor and even serious health issues. Understanding what causes stress, the impact it can have on the body and mind, and knowing how to control or even avoid stress can improve the quality of your life.
In March of 1998, my father was rushed to the hospital because of a heart attack. I remember getting home from basketball practice without my mother home. Instead, my sister was there with her children. The fact that my sister was there was familiar to me, but something did not seem right. My sister stayed with me and did not tell me what happened. Later that night, after my sister left, the news that followed would prepare me to encounter the most defining moment of my life.
Jane D. Hull once said, “At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child 's success is the positive involvement of parents.” There is overwhelming evidence to support the connection between parenting and childhood development. As discussed in various class lectures, parenting styles play a major role in a child’s behavior and their ability to cope with challenging situations in the long run. In addition, childhood development is heavily influenced by biological components, such as genetics and temperament. While I understood these facts, I wasn’t able to fully grasp these concepts until I evaluated my own childhood through an interview with my father. He helped me to be able gain valuable insight into the way I was raised, my personal
Stress can be external (related to the environment), but may also be created by internal perceptions that cause an individual to experience negative emotions surrounding a situation, such as pressure, discomfort, etc., which they
At the root of the crisis in Ukraine is the division of its citizens between their loyalties to Europe vs. Russia. In short, western Ukraine thinks it beneficial to join the European Union, while eastern Ukraine would prefer to unite with Russia. Before delving into the current issues in Ukraine, it is important to acknowledge the country’s political and cultural history leading up to this upheaval. Ukraine is a recent political construction within last 20 years. Prior to that, the pieces of its territory were remnants of other empires, which essentially mark the current divisions within Ukraine. Southeastern Ukraine was settled during the Russian empire in the late 18th century and people in this area are very closely tied...
It was Friday morning and I was in the 5th grade at the time. My father decided to pull both me and my brother out of school. My mother wasn’t home. She had already gone up to the hospital with my grandmother.
When I was a child my father meant the world to me. We had a strong unique bond that only a father and son could possibly have. Although there were moments where we annoyed one another and argued we still loved each other dearly. Since my father was the pastor he would drag me and the rest of my family with him to every church service being held at our church. As you can probably imagine the idea of waking up early on a day off from school wasn’t all that appealing to me. So every Sunday morning I would reluctantly go to each church service. Attending each church service caused me to see my father in a different light than I did at home. I saw him caring for the elderly, praying for and with people who were troubled in various areas of
