Escape is a recurrent theme within both J.D. Salinger’s ‘the Catcher in the Rye’ and Mark Twain’s ‘Huckleberry Finn’ and both Twain and Salinger use linguistic and literary features to develop the theme of escape. The ‘Huckleberry Finn’ extract occurs after Pap has taken Huck to live in his cabin. Huck decides that he needs to escape from Pap’s violent and drunken state- “I made up my mind I would fix up a way to leave there”. The ‘Catcher in the Rye’ extract occurs after Holden has had a fight with Stradlater and is about to decide to escape from Pency - “I decided what I’d really do. I’d get the hell out of Pency- right that same night and all.” Both extracts concern themselves with the main protagonist deciding to escape after a violent situation. Huck physically escapes from the cabin by elaborately faking his own death. Twain uses verbs such as ‘smashed’, ‘beat’ and ‘hacked’ to portray how desperate Huck is to escape. The verbs have negative connotations which make the reader think about Huck’s situation and why he needs to plan his escape carefully and get it right first time so that no one will find him. This shows us that Huck is a very determined person and will go to any lengths to do something which he believes is right; this is reflected later in the novel when Huck rips up the letter to Miss Watson in order to save Jim. By contrast, Holden's escape is more impulsive than Huck’s and he does not consider whether anyone will come looking for him. Salinger uses short sentences to represent Holden’s mind lurching from one idea to another as he is packing. This creates a fast pace which engages the reader and gives them an idea about what Holden's thought process is like. For example, “but all of a sudden. The Catcher in the Rye tells the short journey, of anti-hero Holden Caulfield, between the end of the fall semester and Christmas break (Salinger). The story begins when Holden is expelled from his school, Pency Prep, for failing a majority of his classes (Salinger). Holden knows he must return home, so he attempts to prolong the scolding he will receive from his parents, for being expelled, by venturing around Manhattan until it becomes necessary to return to his home (Salinger). Holden tells his story in the most vulgar way possible. Holden accounts being offered a prostitute by an elevator operator when he asks, “Innarested a little tail t’night?” (Salinger 91). Offensive language is also used throughout the book, for example, “You’re a dirty stupid sonuvabitch of a moron” (Salinger 44). Underage drinking is also one of Holden’s favorite passtimes as evident in the quote, “I ordered a scotch and soda, and told him not to mix it- I said it fast as hell, because if you hem and haw, they think you’re under twenty-one and won’t sell you any intoxicating liquor” (Salinger 69). When Huck and Tom reencounter towards the end of the novel, Twain’s portrayal of each boys’ ideology sparks sharp contrast between practicality and romanticism. Tom is a risk-taker, a divergent thinker, an imaginative boy; exactly Huck’s opposite. Huck is a realist, a hesitant decision-maker, and a submissive boy. When faced with the challenge to free Jim from captivity by the Phelps family, both adventurists come up with a plan and after Huck presents his effective plan to Tom he says “Wouldn’t that plan work?” to which Tom replies, “Work? Why cer’nly, it would work, like rats a fighting.
In his own words, Mark Twain stated, "a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision. And the conscience suffer defeat!" Huck has both a "sound heart" and a "deformed conscience," and the heart overcomes his conscience. His sound heart can be seen when he returns to Jackson Island after disguising himself as a girl. The fact that Mark Twain accomplished all of these feats even with the use of the “n-word” makes the novel even more noteworthy. It should never be prevented from being taught to any student; every student should have the opportunity to read and take in the important messages this book has to offer. Caulfield’s self-imposed isolation as a form of protection can be seen in his physical seclusion from the outside world, in his constant acts of lying, and in his condemnation of society as being “phony.”

Many readers are able to relate to J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye making it a classic. The characters display a variety of personalities making it very easy for readers to understand and follow the different dilemmas throughout the novel. However the greatest dilemma is Holden’s downfall, not only his alienation from society but himself. He believed throughout the whole novel that he had a grasp on his life all while it continued to slip away. Holden’s estrangement following Allie’s death caused him to become dormant, abrasive to others and cynical.
All things considered, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, suggests that people are subject to various enslavements and attempt to pursue freedom from these enslavements. The reason I selected this theme as the most important is due to its real world application. This theme is relevant to real life due to the fact that numerous people are deprived of freedom and are attempting to obtain the freedom that they desire. People throughout history and even today seek their freedom. In this novel, one of the freedoms sought after was the end to racial discrimination, this was achieved in the 1960s by the Civil Rights Movement and famous American hero’s we now admire such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
