Ernie Davis was born on 14th Dec 1939 in Salem, Pennsylvania. His parents were separated and father was died shortly after Davis was born (Group 1 Power Point). After the death of his father, he started living with his grandfather when he was fourteen months old. Though he was from poor family background, he was very interested in playing sports and talented of fast running from his early childhood (Group 1 Power point). Ernie Davis moved to Elmira, New York when he was twelve years old and lived there. Even though his life was very short as compared to other football players, but became the source of motivation and inspiration for many young African-American and became their football role model. Due to this, he decided to become a professional football player. When he was at Syracuse University, Jim Brown was a role model and hero for him. Davis played many national championships and won twice first team All - American Honors. In 1961, Ernie Davis won the Heisman Trophy (which is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football in the United States, whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity) (Group 2 PowerPoint) and become the first African- American to with that trophy. Similarly, in 1959 season, when he was on sophomore year, it was a season of all victory. Ernie Davis was the legendary football player in Syracuse University history. In order to remember the legendary football players and to reflect the importance of the number 44(Jersey), Syracuse University has brought many changes in the campus. Syracuse University opened ‘Ernie Davis Hall’ in August 2009 with the maximum capacity of 250 students. The hall has facilities like gym, dinning hall, and laundry room on each floor (Group 3 Power Point). Similarly, the field in the career dome named as ‘ Ernie Davis Legends Field’ on 10th Oct 2009.
