Throughout his career, Ernest Hemmingway’s writing style has brought many questions from critics all over the world. These questions mainly emerged due to his writing being different from anyone else during that time. Hemmingway’s writing was simple and direct unlike other fellow writers. This made it easier for people to comprehend and it made connections to his ideas straightforward. In works such as Old Man and the Sea and For whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemmingway uses his style of writing to convey his purpose and ideas of literary elements, such as plot, mood, character, symbolism, and theme, which can be analyzed with New Critical Theory and Iceberg Theory. Before beginning his writing career, Hemingway spent his early days as a journalist at The Kansas City Star. As a cub reporter he would develop a journalistic style that would be used in his future work. Though he only stayed for six months, Hemingway took full advantage of this position. He would use The Kansas City Star style -"Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative."- over the time spent there. This journalistic style Hemingway embraced became known as Iceberg Theory -the facts float above water (the 1/8th of the iceberg); the supporting structure and symbolism operate out of sight (the Syed Ali 2 7/8th of the iceberg). The Iceberg theory played a key part in his future novels. Later in his life, Hemingway would enlist into war (WWI) as an ambulance driver for the Italians. At the war Hemingway would get seriously injured and get sent home. However, it was not all that bad for him because the war experience played a vital role in some¬ of his novels such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms. He never tells the readers what exactly happens to Jordan exactly, he leaves them thinking how it could have ended. Though he probably died at the end, or did he? Hemingway cleverly uses his style to convey his purpose and ideas such as symbolism and theme in his novels like Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. These ideas can be analyzed with Iceberg theory and New Critical. The iceberg theory focuses on how Hemingway uses his journalistic style in his works. He uses simple sentences and gets right to the point. The more Hemingway needs to describe something, the less he writes. Hemingway’s style is being adopted by numerous people these days. He is an inspiration for the younger generation, a role model.
