Billy Bob Thornton plays a slightly retarded psychiatric patient by the name of Karl Childers, who has been in an asylum for the criminally insane for the last 25 years. As his name suggests, Karl Childers is a child-like man with instilled Southern Christian values and somewhat comical mannerisms including his nervous grunts and the rubbing of his hands together in preparation and readiness for the day ahead, or perhaps with satisfaction and acceptance of self. His jutting lower lip, raspy voice and short back and sides haircut have similarities with the protagonist in the movie Forest Gump, but that is where the similarities end. Despite Karl’s horrific background, a sense of right and wrong and of justice still seem to pervade. Billy Bob Thornton doesn’t so much act but more so becomes Karl Childers. Karl, at the age of twelve murdered his mother and her lover, the local bully, with a sling blade in a fit of evangelical rage.
The striking yet realistic manner Mankell used in describing Kurt Wallander helped bring his character to life. Mankell portrays Wallander in a fanciful manner by portraying Kurt Wallander is not portrayed as a perfect individual as an investigator might stereotypically be seen; rather he is a grumpy, private, divorced man whom is not close to his family. Wallander is an investigator suffering from anxiety. This anxiety started after a work incident that took place about a year ago where he was shot in the line of duty. He is also eloquently described with depression and someone whom likes to be alone. More importantly, he is described as a man struggling with the idea of balancing personal life events with work events as he has a father suffering from Alzheimer’s, a long distance relationship with a woman, and a daughter he rarely sees or talks to. Despite such faults, he is mesmerizingly depicted as sad yet full of wisdom. One great example is when he reminisces about witnessing the girl emaciating herself in the rape field as Mankell
Leif Erickson. You may not know him, but he was the founder of America. He was a viking, one of the only ones to step foot on the North American continent. I know, you were taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Well you were taught wrong. People can argue this but there is actually a Leif Erikson day. October 9th.
The biggest surprise for me was seeing Kay E. Kuter in Zombie High. After doing some research on the actor, I realize he was in quite a few genre films over the span of his career like Star Trek, Warlock, Charmed, and more. However, I’ll always remember him as the alien leader Enduran in one of my favorite sci-fi films of the 1980s, The Last Starfighter.

Lars Lindstrom is comfortable in almost complete isolation. His only human interaction is with his coworkers, members of his small church, and his brother’s family, with whom he lives on their property in an old reinvented garage. Lars, played by the handsome Ryan Gosling, instantly evokes the audience to love him in a dorky unconventional kind of way. His handsome looks asides, there is something not entirely right about this man Gosling is portraying. Lars seems to have deep emotional baggage that is kept secret to the audience until later in the film.
