“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone” (p.3) Right from the beginning we learn that Equality 7-2521 is breaking an important law. He is in a society that is tightly protected and there is not much freedom to do anything. Everything is fixed and there is no changing. Also, we see that no one can be alone and there is no freedom if there isn’t any alone. We find out that Equality 7-2521 can break some rules and will. “But we loved the Science of Things. We wished to know. We wished to know about …show more content…
all the things which make the earth around us. We asked so many questions that the Teachers forbade it.” (p.6) Equality 7-2521 says this quote.
He has a real passion for science. He could learn about the world and what happens all day but society won’t allow it. They forbad him from asking questions. They want to keep everyone in line and not to give him, or anyone, freedom. This is significant because it gives any point of the society and how they are so strict. It also shows the devotion Equality 7-2521 has to science. “For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whose name is Liberty 5-3000, and we think of no others.” (p.14) Again, this is about Equality 7-2521. But this time it is about his love interest. In his society, love doesn’t endure or in other words not tolerated. But he falls in love anyway. Love teaches Equality that you can’t love and care everyone equally. Because he loves Liberty 5-3000 more than anyone else, he is breaking the Transgression of Preference. That is why society forbids it. After discovering Liberty 5-3000, he can’t stop thinking about her. Equality even makes a name for her, Golden One, that he calls in his head. “But what is freedom? Freedom from what? There is nothing to take a man's freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else.” …show more content…
(p.46) Equality 7-2521 gives a definition of freedom. He finally understands what it means to be free and to not have a set way to do things. To add your style and uniqueness to anything you do. He knows now that freedom is the individual's ability to be alone, to do what he wants (as opposed to what other men want), to enjoy what he possesses on his own (and not share). When he learns this information, it shows that Equality is growing and maturing as a person. He figures out that freedom was all he needed. “I am.
I think. I will.” (p.43) Equality 7-2521 discovers the word “I”. For the first time, he can express his identity as an individual in language. He is now using his freedom. He just doesn’t know about but also lives it. It's interesting to note how quickly he moves from "I" to "my" – from talking about himself and his actions to talking about his possessions. The switch from “we” to “I” opened up a whole new life for him. It was such a big deal for Equality. “"Our dearest one," we whispered. Never have men said this to women.” (p.23) Even though Equality 7-2521 says this, he is talking about Liberty 5-3000. This is a giant step forward for both of them. They are breaking the rules first of all and second they are realizing their feelings for each other. Everyone was programmed to love each other equally but they disregarded that and loved each other anyway. “We shall follow you wherever you go. If danger threatens you, we shall face it also. If it be death, we shall die with you. You are damned, and we wish to share your damnation.” (p.37) Now it is actually Liberty speaking. She tells Equality that she will go with him wherever they end up. She loves him so much that she will leave her home just to be with him. Even if that means she could die, she still follows him. Liberty has chosen to leave her society behind forever, and "damn" herself with
him. “Yet we call them the Golden One, for they are not like the others. The Golden One are not like the others.” (p.15) Equality 7-2521 is talking here again but this time it is about how Liberty 5-3000 is different from everyone else. He gives her a new name, essentially giving her an individual identity by doing so. He’s never given anyone else or himself a new name except for the one the society gave him or her. It’s love for another person that first makes him identify someone as an individual. “It is our own world, Golden One, a strange, unknown world, but our own.” (p.38) This is about Liberty 5-3000 and Equality 7-2521 ultimately going off on their own. Love brought them together and to do this. Even though they are in a world of sameness, both of them find a way around it and make the best of everything. Even if that means running away just to be together. “We are one . . . alone . . . and only . . . and we love you who are one . . . alone . . . and only.” (p.39) Here, the Golden One attempts to explain that she loves Equality 7-2521, but she clearly lacks the necessary vocabulary to do so, and the failed attempt leaves both of them immensely frustrated. They do not know the Unspeakable Word "I," and because of this, they feel instinctively that they are missing an essential concept in their understanding of the world. Equality 7-2521 deciphers the Unspeakable Word in his books, the Golden One's first words to him are "I love you" -- signaling the completion of his quest.
Mencken’s observations are very relevant and it applies to contemporary society. It is necessary to identify what it means by being “free”. Does being free mean that one has choice of religion and type of government? The type of freedom mentioned previously do not apply to mankind if mankind is not safe and is risk for danger. It is human nature to choose safety over freedom as shown in various examples.
Equality 7-2521 is rebellious. If a person is rebellious, he shows a desire to resist authority. This authority is most commonly a government that runs its territory in a way which the rebellious person does not support. Rebellious people argue for changing or replacing this authority because they often view it as corrupt or ineffective. Due to their desire for change, these people are often the most dangerous to governments that wish to retain power and control. Equality 7-2521 shows this desire to defy authority in Anthem. The society that he lives in forbids writing unless it is first approved by the Council of Vocations. However, he has done exactly
Equality 7-2521 aspires to be a self-proclaimed individual. In the novella, Anthem, Ayn Rand discusses of a dystopian society in which every man and women are set equal to each other. Equality is damned by the World Council after a discovery of light and electricity, and a contradictory belief in individualism. Freedom is an essential factor in the happiness of man. Equality is scorned for his different looks, mental competence, and independent beliefs but laughs when he recognizes that he should be glorified for understanding that his perception of life leads to contentment.
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. The book is about a dude named Equality 7-2521.
The natural desire of Equality 7-2521 is knowledge who is born with a curse of uniqueness. He abides within the walls of a collectivist society. The citizens of this society prioritize the good of society over the welfare of the individual. In the beginning of the novel, Equality confesses that “[He] have broken the laws. The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocations bid them so” (Anthem 17). Equality is asking for forgiveness and proves this by quoting “[I] strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Anthem 19). Through Equality’s journey of self-discovery, he gradually starts changing his mind on how he perceives of how critical the Council truly is. He begins rebelling without a care and denounces
The society that Equality 7-2521 was brainwashed in since birth was based on no individualism. Ayn rand in fact was the maker of the self individualist philosophy. She based Equality’s qualities on individualism. Which means putting yourself first and showing all qualities of individuality. Equality 7-2521 wanted to have certains thing like people, places, and the way he learned more than others. As well as looking different than others; taller, smarter and of different color. He was an Individual; which allowed him to want to be a scholar in the house of scholars.
...at he wants. Through example, he is also showing the city people that they have a choice too, whether they want to follow him or reject his ideals in favor of their collective ones. Equality isn’t helping anyone unless they want to be helped. He is merely giving them something that they were never given, a fundamental right to make their own decisions about what is best for them in their minds.Giving people a chance to choose for themselves what they truly want is what objectivism is for.
When Equality 7-2521 turned fifteen, he writes that he was told that “you shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you” (Rand, 22). He says that although he knew it was sinful, he had a desire to become a scholar and learn the “science of things.” In Equality 7-2521’s world, it was immoral and illegal to prefer one subject or person over another because everything was supposed to be equal. Equality...
The society that Equality belonged to drives him away. As Equality runs away from the society he explains, “We have not built this box for the good of our brothers. We have built it for its own sake. It is above all our brothers to us, and its truth above their truth” (Rand 76). Equality begins to put technology over his fellow citizens, showing how technology began to spur division between Equality and those he knew. The ultimatum of putting technology over humans is what this totalitarian government fears against. Additionally, the splitting up of opinions can come from technology development, adding to the idea that freedom of oppression can enable technological progress. The Council discusses with Equality about former inventors similar to Equality’s situation. Solidarity 8-1164 explains what process happened in the past, “Many men in the Home of the Scholars have had strange new ideas in the past […] but when the majority of their brother Scholars voted against them they abandoned their ideas as all men must” (Rand 73). The actions of one man are not to be implemented in this society against the word of the Council, as all men must agree and think the same. Divisions of opinion can disrupt the unity of the community, encouraging the authoritarian government to begin to restrict these ideas. Likewise, authoritarian control with
Equality had more than one primary motivation on his mind. I think the world would be a better place if everyone were motivated in the same way. Equality had more than the light on his mind. Equality started looking at Liberty 5-3000 and called her the ‘Golden One” “You are Beautiful, Liberty 5-3000” ( Chapter 2, Paragraph 17) I think Equality is allowed to feel this way. He should have the right to like a person more than he likes another person. He cared about Liberty and was glad she was only seventeen, so she didn’t have to go to the Palace of Mating. “How old are you?” we asked “Seventeen” they whispered “And we sighed, as if a burden had been taken from us, for we had been thinking without reason of the Palace of Mating.” ( Chapter 2, paragraph
Equality fights in what he believes in just like Prometheus. He wants Liberty to conceive his child and help create a new society for themselves and others. Equality has many similarities to Prometheus. In Greek Mythology, Prometheus brought fire to mankind. Likewise, Equality had brought fire to his town through a light bulb. It was made to show his light and power. (Ayn Rand Anthem Pg 52) “We Equality 7-2521, have discovered it alone, and we are alone to know it.”
“I did not intend to pay, before the gods,/for breaking these laws/because of my fear of one man and his principles.”
A young man lives in a place where the word "I" does not have meaning. It is a society where there are no individuals. It is, however, a place where you strive to serve your brothers. Equality 7-2521 was taught from birth that the individual is not important. He is in a crazed society where the only form of government is collectivism.
“What if free people could live secure in the knowledge that their security didn’t depend upon the threat of instant U.S. retaliation to deter an enemy attack?”
The Declaration of Independence of 1776 promised “unalienable rights.” However, these rights were targeted towards men. In the eighteenth century, the men who were provided with “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” were white males. Although liberty was fundamental to the establishment of the declaration, minorities were disregarded. Women were citizens but did not have a voice in politics. In both Vindication of the Rights of Woman and “Declaration of Sentiments,” females argue for their rights to be freed from a man’s oppression. Inequality of white males was conveyed in Cannibals All! In addition, emancipation and the voice of African Americans was argued in the “Corner Stone” Speech and “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
