The book we read in class was called Anthem by Ayn Rand. This book is about a society that is corrupt in many ways. A couple of ways it’s corrupt is because there is no individualism and they are a very slowly moving society. It took them a long time just to make candles, nowadays candles are made very fast and simple. The government has made it so that the progress of technology is slow and not progressing. None of the people in the town have an actual name, they are known as robots or as a group. Like one of the main characters name is Equality 7-2521. Equality is a street sweeper in this society and is not like any of the other people. He is smart, strong, self-centered and curious. Another character that Equality falls in love with is Liberty 5-3000. She is a peasant that gives Equality water when they are not supposed to talk to each other. Equality’s best friend and only friend is International 4-8818. He helped Equality find the tunnel and kept it a secret from the rest of the society. Equality later names himself Prometheus and Liberty, The Golden One and later on at the house Gaea. Ayn Rand renames them Prometheus and Gaea because they are very much like these gods from Greek mythology. Later on, they run into the Forbidden Forest together to start a new life for them and for the future. They find a house with many books and Equality reads them to discover “I”. That is when Equality 7-2421 renames himself Prometheus and Liberty 5-3000, Gaea.
Equality 7-2521 aspires to be a self-proclaimed individual. In the novella, Anthem, Ayn Rand discusses of a dystopian society in which every man and women are set equal to each other. Equality is damned by the World Council after a discovery of light and electricity, and a contradictory belief in individualism. Freedom is an essential factor in the happiness of man. Equality is scorned for his different looks, mental competence, and independent beliefs but laughs when he recognizes that he should be glorified for understanding that his perception of life leads to contentment.
Right from the beginning we learn that Equality 7-2521 is breaking an important law. He is in a society that is tightly protected and there is not much freedom to do anything. Everything is fixed and there is no changing. Also, we see that no one can be alone and there is no freedom if there isn’t any alone. We find out that Equality 7-2521 can break some rules and will.
The natural desire of Equality 7-2521 is knowledge who is born with a curse of uniqueness. He abides within the walls of a collectivist society. The citizens of this society prioritize the good of society over the welfare of the individual. In the beginning of the novel, Equality confesses that “[He] have broken the laws. The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocations bid them so” (Anthem 17). Equality is asking for forgiveness and proves this by quoting “[I] strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Anthem 19). Through Equality’s journey of self-discovery, he gradually starts changing his mind on how he perceives of how critical the Council truly is. He begins rebelling without a care and denounces
The society that Equality 7-2521 was brainwashed in since birth was based on no individualism. Ayn rand in fact was the maker of the self individualist philosophy. She based Equality’s qualities on individualism. Which means putting yourself first and showing all qualities of individuality. Equality 7-2521 wanted to have certains thing like people, places, and the way he learned more than others. As well as looking different than others; taller, smarter and of different color. He was an Individual; which allowed him to want to be a scholar in the house of scholars.
The city represented slavery. When in the city, Equality had been guilty of many transgressions. He was not like his brothers, he was different he was smarter, healthier, and stronger. At the age of five he advanced to home of the student, where he got scolded for learning faster then his brothers. Equality teachers told him that he had evil in his bones because he was taller then his brothers. Then at the age of fifteen when the house of vocations came Equality was guilty of the great transgression of preference because he wanted to be a scholar, but his selected vocation was to be a street sweeper. Every day while he swept by the fields he would watch and smile at Liberty and she would smile back. Liberty was a woman that worked in the home of the peasants. Making contact with a woman was prohibited but for when in the palace of the mating. The palace of the mating was where people were forced to breed. Equality thought touching a woman was shameful and ugly. Th! en one day while he swept the streets he found a grate that led to underground tunnel full of things from the unmentionable times. For two years he went to the tunnel and discovered a new glowing light. Then one day while in the tunnel decided that he must share his secret with his brothers. He decided that he would bring his secret in front of the world council meeting. When Equality entered the world council meeting the scholars got frightened and angry. They demanded that he tell them why he was there. He connected the wires and they glowed, the scholars backed up against the wall as they stared in horror. They told him that he they were going to punish for breaking so many laws. Equality trembled in fright he quickly grabbed the light and ran to the uncharted forest. No man followed because they feared the unknown.
All members of the society live in groups ruled by councils. The main character desires to study and learn, but was punished while growing up because he was smarter, different, and curious. Throughout the journal, it seems that Equality 7-2521 struggles with his natural desire to learn and discover. There is a distinct symbolism of light in this novel. While growing up, Equality 7-2521 wanted to be assigned to the House of Scholars, but instead was made a street sweeper.
As the novel opens Equality 7-2521 states that what he's doing is a sin. In his society it is a sin to do things that do not involve others, and the words he thinks and writes are for no one eyes to see or hear, but his own. In his society everyone thinks the same, and if you were to be the different one you would be sent to the palace of correction and detention. Equality 7-2521 actually had a mind of his own. As you can see Science fascinated him. For example in chapter 1 while it was dark Equality 7-2521 would sneak into a dark tunnel in which he would spend 3 hours doing scientific research, and experiments. He would also steal manuscripts from the scholars, and every night he would study. This went on for two years. The difference between Equality 7-2521 and his society is that he actually wanted to succeed, while the rest of his society would settle for what they were told to be. The "glass box", can also be referred as a light bulb. After countless nights of experimenting, Equality 7-2521 succeeds in connecting the power of electricity to re-invent the electric light. This invention that he came up with can benefit to society, but he doesn't know how to tell them. Remember, you can't do anything that others can't do. That was the philosophy that the society believed in. He figured that since the council wouldn't appreciate his work, he would rather show his invention to the scholars. When the World Council of Scholars arrives in his city, he will present to them, as his gift, the "glass box with the power of the sky." One night while Equality 7-2521 was working on an experiment in his tunnel, he totally lost track of time. He rushed out, and then the council questioned him on why was he late. Equality 7-2521 refused to answer and therefore he was sent to the palace of correction and detention. He was able to escape and retreat back to the tunnel. He found everything the same way that he had left it. He was then getting prepared for the arrival of the scholars.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
He is enthralled by the philosophy of science. He does not care about other subjects of his life, he spends every extra second he has to experiment with the electricity. Electricity represents education and happiness. In this society, the most advanced technology they have is the candle. Since Equality discovered electricity and has continued to pursue its domestication, it signifies that he enjoys creating and experimenting more than simply memorizing facts.Equality even said himself that he has “followed it [electricity] in preference to all of our [his] studies” (53). This shows that instead of the other studies of his life, he prefers to explore the uncharted information and experiment. Clearly he is committing the Transgression of Preference, because he is spending more time on creating more electricity, than his other studies. Liberty also a certain preference over an idea. She enjoys discovering herself. She likes to stand in front of the mirror that she discovered in the house from the Unmentionable Times. This signifies that by looking at her reflection constantly it shows she wants to learn about herself. She wants to learn who she is. She is so enthralled in learning about her body that it even stated in the book that
The society of Equality 7-2521 is dishonest, and everyone knows nothing about the truth of the past. Equality 7-2521’s ego gets in his way of his own judgement. His perspective blurs his vision and makes his decisions selfish. His ways of individuality are better for the people. The brothers in the corrupt society would be better off if they were not in a collective society but if they were in an individual society, and stood as many instead of one.
Equality 7-2521 seemed to always be different from everyone else. He thought of himself as cursed because he went against the rules of his community. He had a preference to be assigned as a scholar but was instead assigned as street sweeper. He discovered the place left behind from the Unmentionable Times and kept it a secret despite that being illegal. He also began to develop feelings for a woman named Liberty 5-3000. Although he was always on a quest to find individuality, it was first explicitly mentioned when he provided a name for Liberty 5-3000. “We have given you a name in our thoughts, Liberty 5-3000… The Golden One” (Rand, pg. 55). By naming her, he is assigning a name that actually distinguishes her from everyone else rather than the generic names they are given at birth. This quest was fulfilled after he ran away with Liberty 5-3000 following him. The search for the word “I” can be seen when she struggles to come up with a way to say “I love you” to Equality 7-2521. Instead she says, “We are one… alone… and only… and we love you who are one…alone… and only” (Rand, pg. 87) She is struggling to show him that she as an individual loves him as an individual. After reading the manuscripts they find in the house from the Unmentionable Times, Equality 7-2521 discovers the word “I,” and with it, the sense of individuality and ego. He renames himself Prometheus and names Liberty 5-3000
The most important instance of it centers around Equality 7-2521's invention of a light bulb. Think of the scene. Equality 7-2521 generates the electric light by himself, in an underground tunnel, where it is the lone light shining in the gloom: "…in that moment nothing occurred save our two hands over a wire glowing in a black abyss."(5.5). And doesn't it seem to render Equality 7-2521's own position? He's the solitary source of idea and individuality in the dark mass of his afriad and harsh society, and the only source of hope,
