THESIS STATEMENT
The philosophical ideas of Epicureanism and Stoicism taught how to live a comfortable and satisfactory life, although they maintained similar aspects, Epicurus and Zeno’s teachings incorporated exceptional differences.
PURPOSE STATEMENT
In examining literary works, documents, and articles referring to the notable aspects of Epicureanism and Stoicism, the contrasts and discrepancies of these philosophical theories are clear.
INTRODUCTION
In ancient Greece, many philosophers professed their ideas in hopes of gaining supporters and making themselves and their philosophical concepts known. Along with the several great philosophers of this time, Epicurus and Zeno promoted their theories and collected their disciples. However, Epicurus and Zeno are not simply known for their philosophies, but for how significantly their ideas differentiated. “To the Stoic, it [referring to the philosophic life] consists in following virtue, in obedience to an authoritative law of nature or reason. . . To the Epicurean, the good life is that of rational enjoyment of all the satisfactions which the world affords” (De Burgh 178). De Burgh humbly summarizes the basic concepts of living as a Stoic in contrast to life as an Epicurean.
Through explanations of both Epicurean and Stoic ideas and illustrating the differences concerning these philosophies, their few similarities diminish and the exceptional variations between them are obvious. When examining the beliefs of an Epicurean, their strategy for acquiring happiness is clearly unique. The Epicurean lived a simple life and eliminated any excessive causes of human anguish. Epicurean ethical theory consistently operates under the presumption that hedonism, or pleasure, is the greatest good. For the Epicureans, an individual in a state of ataraxia, or complete freedom from mental disturbance, has achieved the most complete and pleasurable life, the greatest good for a human being. The concept of ataraxia, however, differs in many ways from what most would characterize as hedonism. Consequently, Epicurus is able to construct a great many controversial (and perhaps counterintuitive) views on particularly delicate subjects like death, the gods, friendship, and society. I find the issue of death to be one of the most glaring holes in all of Epicurean ethics. How are we to reconcile an ethical doctrine of hedonism with the issue of death? The manner in which Epicurus defines his hedonism sheds an alternative light on the world, a light which illuminates a much more accepting image of death than other generic notions of hedonism.

The modern day notion of self-improvement implies changing one’s character to be a ‘better’ person. The issue of inconsistency is a result of the objectors’ misguided application of the modern day understanding of the terms. It is not an inconsistency that lies within Stoicism itself, but an inconsistent use of the definitions. The Stoics speak of one set of definitions and the charges speak of another. To prove inconsistency in their work it is necessary that the philosophy be challenged on it’s own terms. Therefore, the charges of inconsistency against Stoic determinism do not stand; they are misguided objections that do not coordinate with the Stoics established understanding of self-improvement and responsibility.

With their philosophical roots grounded in ancient Greece, Stoicism and Epicureanism had contrary yet significant impacts on Roman society. These two philosophies differed in many of their basic theories. Stoics attempted to reach a moral level where they had freedom from passion, while Epicureans strove for pleasure and avoided all types of pain. Stoics like the Epicureans, emphasized ethics as the main field of knowledge, but they also developed theories of logic and natural science to support their ethical doctrines.

Marcus Aurelius was a famous philosopher in 121 through 180 C.E. He lived a hard life and even though he was surrounded by crowds he was considered a recluse. He was known for his kindness and mercy. The last years of his life were spent on a military campaign. It is said that these years were the hardest and loneliest. However, instead of becoming bitter and angry Aurelius wrote The Meditations. This was a diary or journal of his personal thoughts. He believed that by writing this it was his duty to his soul. The Meditations, is a popular piece of stoic literature. In this paper I will be describing how Aurelius used stoicism in book two of The Meditations and what I liked and did not like about what he said.

Stoicism is not just another Greek philosophy – it is a way of life. Common belief characterizes a Stoic as lacking emotion. Stoic reasoning behind a lack of emotion, or indifference, is to prevent passion from blinding rational judgment. Indifference is not the sole identifier of a Stoic; other characteristics include moderation and virtue. Stoicism teaches that happiness can only be obtained through virtue. To achieve indifference and virtue, certain sacrifices need to be made, which is where moderation comes into play. For example, hatred and love are opposing emotions. Because Stoicism calls for indifference, a Stoic must be moderate and avoid both extremities. Despite having been conceived nearly two thousand years ago, the principles of Stoicism remain relevant even now. Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and “Indian Camp” relate to Stoicism because the two pieces echo the Stoic ideas of moderation, indifference, and virtue.

Misunderstood as it may be, Stoicism has transcended time in a way that not many philosophies have been able to accomplish. Despite its creation occurring during a completely different time period, its teachings and techniques carry into everyday life for all centuries. Humans will always have human reactions, so the Stoic ideas will never cease to be relevant. Because people are far from perfect, all people necessitate improvement. No man is capable of the perfection that is associated with God. If coming in at a close second is the best we, as humans, can do, then we should forever try to become the closest to perfection that we can. Through Stoicism, as well as other philosophies, individuals attempt to reach this “perfection” in order to
