In our class we talked about environmental ethics, practiced leave no trace principles, and completed a hands-on service project at the community S.U.R.F. garden. Through the area of environmental ethics, I thought more about how I can contribute to preserving the environment. When we talked about the ideas of conservation and preservation I thought about what I realistically can do to create an impact on others, my community, and campus to participate in environmental service. Environmental service provides a different, more engaging way of treating academic content through the combination of action and reflection. During my experiences in this course I have learned through serving in the S.U.R.F. garden that there are more opportunities for me to give back to the Redlands community. This was my first time being in the S.U.R.F. garden and I found out that they use organic practices like crop rotation, companion planting, composting and planting of green manures in areas to be laid fallow, or to rest. I also learned that the food from the S.U.R.F. farm is donated to promote social equity and produce is sold to the campus food management company, Bon Appétit and some of it is also donated to Redlands Family Services. There are also plots leasable to students, staff, faculty, and any organization on campus. Through experiential education we take what we learn in the classroom and apply it to the real world. Through our group cooking activity, for preparation for our Joshua tree trip, I learned for the first time how to use and set up a portable stove burner. With this learning experience I will now be able to work and set up a burner and will be prepared to use one, if needed, when I go on other outdoor trips. I had learned lots of new things this year and especially this semester in U.S. History Since 1877. This history course required all students to complete twenty hours of service learning or to write a term paper. After considering the two options, I decided to give the service learning a chance because I thought it would be an interesting experience. There were a variety of projects to choose from, but I felt that the Sustainability Project was the right fit for me.

At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
An environmentalist is a person worships the environment and cares for nature more than people. At the beginning of the semester, I thought that environmental justice was justice for the environment, which is true to a point, but I now know that it is justice for the people. Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.

In this paper, I will approach the topic of environmental ethics from several related sides. I will discuss why the environment is a morally significant concern, how an environmental ethic can be developed, and what actions such an ethic would require to maintain and protect the environment.
Ethics are moral principles or values that govern the conduct of an individual or a group.It is not a burden to bear, but a prudent and effective guide which furthers life and success. Since law does not necessarily cover the morality of many controversial issues, moral reflection ought to be performed on any action, regardless of its lawfulness. The growing power of business in today’s society has enabled businesses to significantly impact the world. Hence, business ethics is highly relevant as it could determine whether businesses contribute or cause harm to the society at large.
I shall answer this question by discussing what ethics and values are and how they can influence business sustainability. I will also discuss why ethics and values are important and necessary in a business, and the possible repercussions that could occur without ethics and values in a business.
