Entrepreneurial Journalism: A Bangladesh perspective
Syed Rabius Shams
Apparently, it seems that Bangladesh enjoys too much ‘Freedom of Press’ as because growing numbers of digital media ventures are being instituted day by day. It’s a good sign in perspective of commercial entrepreneurial belongings. Conversely, sometimes it hinders accuracy of information and standard of News as the new media entrepreneurs are tailored by newly introduced professionals who don’t have much experience or less savvy of digital journalism. And obviously, my concern is on later one viz the single entrepreneur, startup and small & medium scale Media enterprises.
Let’s see what the term ‘Entrepreneurial Journalism’ is meant for? Frankly speaking, it is not

While, in our country, journalists are working as Entrepreneurial Journalists at an alarming rate, some are bucking the trend and starting successful businesses nevertheless are not academically expressed. After all, the conceptualisation of entrepreneurial journalism is still new-fangled of its kind in the country. I had the opportunity to scan some studies and articles regarding ‘Journalism Entrepreneurship: Bangladesh’ perspective and lastly I googled the term ‘entrepreneurial journalism’ + ‘Bangladesh’ and found not a single write-up or study has been articled or carried out on the buzz issue. I did not find any database or list of Entrepreneurial Journalists in the …show more content…
Consequently, I got the chance to discuss the issue with Elanie Steyn, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Journalism Area Head of Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma. She replied I think others should be given the chance to be an Entrepreneurial Journalist. It will blow new media in Bangladesh.
In this circumstance, I recommend that National Online Mass Media Policy 2015 (NOMMP) should come forward and lawfully ensure the Freedom of Press. What I would like to suggest is to bring requisite actions in this shabby business trends without hindering the media entrepreneurship flow. Additionally, academicians should take care of focusing this in their writings and teachings as well.
Last but not least, I would like to refer Rohit Bhargava’s speech who is a trend curator, founder of the Influential Marketing Group (IMG). In his article ‘How Entrepreneurial Journalism will change our world?’ reveals that journalism entrepreneurship offers the chance to think of content creation in business terms. As it gains popularity, this field also has the potential to change the way that we find and consume information, and change our world in the
In the documentary film, Page One: Inside The New York Times, the inner world of journalism is revealed through journalists David Carr and Brian Stelter as the newspaper company The New York Times, struggles to keep alive within a new wave of news journalism. The film is dedicated to reveal the true inner mechanics of what modern day new journalists face on a daily basis and leaves the audience almost in a state of shock. It broadcasts news journalism as yes, an old school method of news generation, but it also highlights an important component that reveals the importance behind this “old school” methodology. We often think that progression always correlates with positive products, but the documentary insists that within the case of modern journalism, the new wave method is actually a detriment that can reap negative consequences.
Over the centuries, the media has played a significant role in the shaping of societies across the globe. This is especially true of developed nations where media access is readily available to the average citizen. The media has contributed to the creation of ideologies and ideals within a society. The media has such an effect on social life, that a simple as a news story has the power to shake a nation. Because of this, governments around the world have made it their duty to be active in the regulation and control of media access in their countries. The media however, has quickly become dominated by major mega companies who own numerous television, radio and movie companies both nationally and internationally. The aim of these companies is to generate revenue and in order to do this they create and air shows that cater to popular demand. In doing so, they sometimes compromise on the quality of their content. This is where public broadcasters come into perspective.
The 21st century marks the crisis of journalism as the rise of social media and the oversaturation of news outlets for consumers has caused a steady decrease in viewership, especially in younger viewers, as well as the inevitable death of the traditional newspaper. According to Geoffrey Baym, the public has become increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of news mediums as the lines between news (public) and business interests are being increasingly blurred. This is due to major news network like NBC, CBS, or ABC turning their news programs into “infotainment”. The emphasis of these news programs are on entertainment rather than reporting on traditional current events and politics. Although traditional journalism is coming to a close, alternative methods of journalism have emerged. One such example is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. While the main objective of the show is to entertain, increasingly more people are gathering their information about current events from satirical news programs like The Daily Show and late-night talk shows. The Daily Show establishes itself as a credible, alternative source of journalism by using satire to question figures of authority, critique current events by use of parody, and create a forum for discussion of subjects related to democracy.
Hence, the power of media has touched its apex in today’s age. Its societal, political and economic functions reflect its unparallel capacity to affect the human life in all spheres.

Nowadays, entrepreneurship becomes most popular career, where our government encourages our graduated student to involve in business so that unemployment will not happen in our country. Policymakers, academics, and researcher agree that entrepreneurship is a vital route to economic advancement for both developed and developing economics (Zelealem et al., 2004). Entrepreneurship has many types for example small business and others. Today small business, particularly the new ones, is the main vehicle for entrepreneurship, contributing not just to employment, social and political stability, but also to innovation and competitive power (Thurik & Wennekers, 2004).
Finally, observing the traditional organizations and how they used to associate themselves to the physical forms by which they distributed their products – television broadcasting company, radio broadcasting company, newspaper, book or magazine publisher. Recently, these media firms had to restructure their business in order to be successful in this digital world. Hence, they had to widen their delivery medium rather than limiting it, and be exploiters of content wherever content is available to be exploited.
Journalism is type of writing that investigates and includes lots of research of good and bad stories and some events. Journalists tend to write news stories that people should know about and haven’t already heard. Journalism comes in different categories; some are reporters, writers, editors, and photographers. People who tend to like journalism are those who love language and enjoying writing and reading, are called journalist; they work as reporters at newspapers, magazines, websites, TV stations, and radio stations. Good journalists love to read and want to find out what is going on around them and the world. They write short and long stories as they must write true stories. Journalists write stories that are from real people and they make the stories real too. People are not interested in reading newspapers now as much as they used to long time ago. These days’ people carry news on their iPods, cell phones, laptops, and more. They can even watch them on TV. A long time ago people knew the news through newspapers or the rich would have a radio which was the only way to know what is going in the world, but now news are everywhere.
Consequently, today’s audience is considered non-captive and far more empowered. This comes with challenges as well opportunities for journalists. Part of the challenge is that those who stick to a specialty area like radio or television, risk broadcasting themselves out of relevance. So, “rather than undermining the traditional narrative, the Internet is an opportunity to experiment with multi-dimensional storytelling and new narrative approaches that provide context and depth and also are more compelling and engaging.” (Grabowicz 2014) This requires the ability to reach the audience using more than one platform.
In order to see how globalisaiotn is important to business journalism, we will focus on how Internet affects industrial norms of business journalism. In the following, we will first discuss how the new media contributes to the business journalism, and then we will discuss how globalisation changes the business journalism in aspects of professionalism, industrial competition and variety of news.

Being an entrepreneur, is advanced citizenship, you have to want it real bad. Entrepreneur is not entitlement. Being an entrepreneur is a life commitment. Like in the movie Wall Street, a famous line was "You can 't be a little bit pregnant." The fact is you can 't be an on again, off again entrepreneur.
Many people dream of becoming entrepreneurs someday. But it made me realize that there other factors that needs to be taken into consideration. We need to ask ourselves are we ready to take the challenge to the outside world. Not everyone have the vision, innovation and creativity to become an entrepreneur. The individual must have a positive attitude and accept the responsibility, have discipline to meet their goals, and take action when the opportunity presents itself. Many prefer a job security and rely on a weekly paycheck, while entrepreneurs will take risks and doesn 't have that luxury to know the amount of their income.
Entrepreneurship - a special kind of activity. Its constant conditions are limited resources, competition and uncertainty of the situation. The main tools of the entrepreneur are: thrift, cooperation and innovation. Consequently, enterprise is the independent economic entity, with rights of a legal entity, which is based on the use of labor collective property produces and sells products, works, and provides services.
The society in Bangladesh is highly polarized along political lines of two major political parties the Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Newspapers could remain outside and allegedly are toeing the party lines. As a result, people do not always get a total picture of particular issue or event and get influenced by biased opinion/analysis. This also acts as some sort of censorship by the journalists or newspaper owners. Similarly, the journalists unions are divided on political lines, which is a barrier on the development of
