Many authors use Gothic literature in their common works like “The Black Cat,” written by Edgar Allen Poe, “Prey,” by Richard Matheson, “The Devil and Tom Walker,” by Washington Irving, “The Feather Pillow,” by Horacio Quiroga, and “A Rose For Emily,” by William Faulkner. In effort to create a sense of mystery, suspense, and superstition, these authors use these Gothic Elements: Entrapment and Violence. By using these elements, authors illustrate their belief that one should express themselves through individualism. One element that conveys this type of realism is Violence. Authors such as Poe, Matheson, and Faulkner all have examples of such elements. One example of Poe using entrapment would be in his book “The Black Cat.” In this story the main character is trapped in his own state of mind and is unable to change. He regrets this by stating “I am almost ashamed to own -- yes, even in this felon’s cell” (Poe 3). Unable to change his acts, the main character remains in a constant trifle. In the novel “Prey,” Matheson shows readers how trials and tribulations can kill one's morality. The author wrote about how “Amelia reached up quickly to the bolt. It had been shot. She was trapped” (Matheson 6). This creates a sense of fear in the character and shows her susceptibility to danger. Lastly, in “The Feather Pillow,” William Faulkner uses the element of entrapment to convey that one person cannot exist without the other. When Alicia, the main character, is separated from her husband, she is drained both physically and mentally. In both literal and metaphorical ways she is entrapped by her sickness or by her lack of love shown. The author demonstrates the literal way by stating that “she felt as though a million kilos were pinning her to the bed” (Faulkner 2).
