Think it’s easy to give up your celebratory pizza or quit your midnight snacking so easily?, to change your lifesytle in a snap? The 17th to the 18th century was considered as the Enlightenment or The Age of Reason. During the Enlightenment in Europe and Russia, philosophes or Enlightenment thinkers looked for patterns in nature and applied it to society to ameliorate it. People also challenged the old traditional ways of life and knowledge. What was their main idea? The main idea of the philosophes was greater individual freedom. This idea was a key part of their thinking in three areas: politics, religion, and the economy as well as social equality.
First, Locke’s main idea was important to ideas on government because it promoted cizitens having the power to govern themselves and to possess rights. In Locke’s Second Treatise on Civil Government, he writes,”freedom to order their actions, and dispose [manage] their possessions and persons”

Smith discusses the importance of individual freedom as it regards financial liberties when he writes, “Every man… is left perfectly free to purse his own interest in his own way” (Doc C). Smith believed that if a man could make money through his own means then its only fair for him to have the authority to choose what to do that hard earned money. The right to be in charge of one’s own finances has the possibility of society beneficting as a whole. Smith’s outlook on financial liberties delineates a commmon goal of the Enlightenment thinkers. It can be argued that aocial equality was the main idea of Mary Wollestonecraft’s discussion of women because she writes, “free them from all resraint by allowing them to participate in the inherit rights of mankind” (Doc D). Wollestonecraft wants women to access the same oppurnties as men. Equal educational oppurnity is important because it guides women through the sexist world that goes against them;
John Locke, one of the leading philosophers of the European Enlightenment was very important when it came to political thought in the United States. His ideas of the reasons, nature, and limits of the government became especially important in the development of the Constitution. In one of his most famous writings of that time, Two Treatises on Government (1689), Locke established a theory where personal liberty could coexist with political power ; meaning that the people would agree to obey the government and in return, the government would have the responsibility of respecting the people’s natural rights. In other words, he laid out a social contract theory that provided the philosophy and source of a governing author...
The enlightenment period was full of social and intellectual growth. This time period changed the way people thought of the world and exposed the world to different cultures. It brought the world into several revolutions that will later contribute to great change for the modern world. Travel was significant during the enlightenment due to the enlightenment ideas that knowledge and information was gained through experience. In order for the people to get a better understanding of the world and gain information about other cultures, they had to travel to these people. During this era and time period of the enlightenment, travel was significant in order to get a quality and endless education. Denis Diderot shows the significance that travel did
...wo systems that our government has today with the three different branches of government, each of which has some power over the others to create balance. John Locke influenced the American Revolution, and many other American governmental leaders who were crucial in outlining our country’s government. He gave Thomas Paine the inspiration to bring a nation to its feet, and he also influenced James Madison who drew up the principles of liberty and government (John Locke). John Locke’s Natural Rights are the basis for our Declaration’s “unalienable rights”. John Locke’s emphasis on constitutionalism and human understanding influenced our government with the ideas of limited government, balance of power, and a representative ruling body. With his written views he has shaped our country’s executive and legislative governmental power to this day (John Locke).
Unlike previous centuries, the eighteenth century was the dawn of a new age in Western Europe where intellectuals thrived, science was honored, and curiosity was encouraged; and the framework of how civil society was changed as a whole. From the dawn of the Enlightenment, Western European culture was changing due to the revolutionary new ideas that were changing. With the social change going on, political change was as evident as time went on. With these changes rooted in social change, the effects of the Enlightenment can be seen over 18th century Western Europe and beyond. Towards the late 1780s the late German Philosopher Immanuel Kant described the Enlightenment as, “Man leaving his self caused immaturity” ( Spiel Vogel 503).
John Locke, an English philosophe, like many other philosophes of his time worked to improve society by advocating for the individual rights of people. John Locke strongly believed in more rights for the people and was against oppression. In his book, Second Treatise on Civil Government, Locke stated, “(W)e must consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose [manage] of their possessions . . .” (Document A). Locke means every man is naturally equal, no one was created better and he has certain guaranteed rights. This helps society because it would deny a monarch to strip a person of their guaranteed rights and it would make the monarch less powerful and his/her power would be given to the people. The greatest change to government Locke states as necessary, “(W)hen the government is dissolved [ended], the people are at liberty to provide themselves, by erecting a new legislative [lawma...
Mini-Q Essay A time period known as The Age of Reason or The Enlightenment was when philosophy, politics, science and social communications changed drastically. It helped shape the ideas of capitalism and democracy, which is the world we live in today. People joined together to discuss areas of high intellect and creative thoughts. The Enlightenment was a time period in which people discussed new ideas, and educated people, known as philosophers, all had a central idea of freedom of choice and the natural right of individuals. These philosophers include John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft.
This paper is about John Locke who was a philosopher in the 17-century. He was an Englishmen and his ideas formed the basic concept for the government and laws, which later allowed colonist to justify revolution. I agree with what Locke is saying because everybody should be able to have their own freedom and still respect the freedom of other people. John said, “Individuals have rights, and their duties are defined in terms of protecting their own rights and respecting those of others”. This paper will present to you information about his enlightenment, personal information, and how we as people feel about his decisions.
A few examples of the similarities of the Declaration and Locke’s Second Treatise of Government will suffice, in order to show Locke’s importance. Some of the most important phrases of the Declaration seem to be Locke’s phrases. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration, after declaring the purpose of government and if it fails to fulfill its purposes, that “it is the right of the People to alter or abolish it,” form a new one in such a way that will “effect their safety and happiness.” Locke declared about governmental purposes that “whenever that end is manifestly neglected, or opposed, the trust must necessarily be forfeited, and the power devolve into the hands of those that gave it, who may place it anew where they shall think best for their safety and security” (Locke 1690, Ch. XIII, P.149).
There are many different ways in which the Enlightenment affected the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution. One way was the by the idea of a Social Contract; an agreement by which human beings are said to have abandoned the "state of nature" in order to form the society in which they now live. HOBBES, LOCKE, and J.J. ROUSSEAU each developed differing versions of the social contract, but all agreed that certain freedoms had been surrendered for society's protection and that the government has definite responsibilities to its citizens. Locke believed that governments were formed to protect the natural rights of men, and that overthrowing a government that did not protect these rights was not only a right, but also an obligation. His thoughts influenced many revolutionary pamphlets and documents, including the Virginia Constitution of 1776, and the Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights was created as a listing of the rights granted to citizens, the Bill of Rights serves to protect the people from a too powerful government. These civil rights granted to U.S. Citizens are included in the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, Locke’s ideas about checks and balances and the division of church and state were later embodied in the U.S. Constitution as well. The Constitution replaced a more weakly organized system of government as outlined under the Articles of Confederation.
Review this essay John Locke – Second treatise, of civil government 1. First of all, John Locke reminds the reader from where the right of political power comes from. He expands the idea by saying, “we must consider what estate all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit.” Locke believes in equality among all people. Since every creature on earth was created by God, no one has advantages over another.
Locke believed that the role of the government was to protect property and resolve disputes through administrative justice or by creating legislation. The government would be created through the consent of the people. Locke believed that freedom in the state was “having the liberty to order and use your property and to be free from the arbitrary will of another.” No one person can claim divine right to rule, because there is no way to determine if that person is actually divine or not. If government is not fulfilling their duty, the people have a right to overthrow it (i.e. revolution; was a major influence for American revolutionaries). For Locke, law is enlightening and liberating to humans. “law manifests what’s good for everybody.” The key reason for political society is for men to improve land. Locke believes men have mutual interest in coming together to protect land. Men must enter an agreement because there are a few bad apples, though not everyone is bad. If these few apples can be dealt with, their impact can be
The Enlightenment is a unique time in European history characterized by revolutions in science, philosophy, society, and politics. These revolutions put Europe in a transition from the medieval world-view to the modern western world. The traditional hierarchical political and social orders from the French monarchy and Catholic Church were destroyed and replaced by a political and social order from the Enlightenment ideals of freedom and equality(Bristow, 1). Many historians, such as Henry Steele Commager, Peter Gay, have studied the Enlightenment over the years and created their own views and opinions.
Humans, people, adults, children, they all mention their rights to freedom without thinking about how or why. They never stop to think about how it is that they have so much freedom. Freedom over choice, thought, race, religion, and who it was that came up with it and helped make it come true. During the Enlightenment period, philosophes or philosophers began to emerge. In our timeline we have recorded Galileo to be our first, who used to say that the sun was the center of the universe. This was in 1633, after that we began to have more philosophers express their ideas, such as John Locke in 1690, who published Two Treatises on Civil Government. This continued through the 17th and 18th century in Europe, where more Enlightenment Thinkers started to get together and discuss their ideas. During this period of time Enlightenment Thinkers used their education as an advantage to bring their ideas related to

The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement during the 18th century that stressed them importance of utilizing reason to contradict previously accepted traditions. Some enlightenment philosophies believed that women were biologically and socially different from men. It should be noted that during these times women were disregarded as significant moral and political actors. Jean-Jacques The social contract was a document written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau during the 18th century. It laid the foundation for the origin and legitimacy of the governeent. Rousseau said “man was born free, and everywhere else he is in chains.” Roussea was severlly bothered by the fact that that there was social inequality and private property. In his eyes freedom meant equal citizens obeying the laws that they have made themselves. He was fim believer in authority is derived from the people alone.
