Journal Week #2 “Immaturity is the incapacity to use one’s intelligence without the guidance of another.”-Kant “What is Enlightenment” This sentence made me stop and think. I feel like at my age, with myself and my peers, I deal a lot with the term immaturity. Whether it be someone calling me immature or when referring to what someone said or did. I had always thought of it as a lack of experience mixed with someone usually being self-centered. This sentence made me think more about what immaturity might have meant during the enlightenment era. For Kant, it seems to mean that a person cannot rely on their own experiences and observations. Instead they use someone else’s deductions, correct or not, to hold up their beliefs. This sounds sort
of like my definition. A lack of experience leads to immaturity. I however, believe it can stem from a self-centered trait. Kant seems to believe that it stems from a person not wanting to use their own intelligence. This difference may be explained from a difference in the circle we are coming from. I took my definition from modern day youth. Kant is coming from the aspect of scientist and inventors of the enlightenment era. Slightly different groups. If you think about it though, could selfishness be a form of incapacity to use your own intelligence? The world is not centered around one person after all.
Enlightenment is defined as, “a final blessed state marked by the absence of suffering and desire,”; although, to be completely without desire would require experience with the indulgences of the physical world. It brought the world into several revolutions that will later contribute to great change for the modern world. While the idea of attaining enlightenment can be taught, the method or path of attaining that enlightenment cannot be taught or passed along. One way was the by the idea of a Social Contract; an agreement by which human beings are said to have abandoned the "state of nature" in order to form the society in which they now live. HOBBES, LOCKE, and J.J. ROUSSEAU each developed differing versions of the social contract, but all agreed that certain freedoms had been surrendered for society's protection and that the government has definite responsibilities to its citizens. Locke believed that governments were formed to protect the natural rights of men, and that overthrowing a government that did not protect these rights was not only a right, but also an obligation. His thoughts influenced many revolutionary pamphlets and documents, including the Virginia Constitution of 1776, and the Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights was created as a listing of the rights granted to citizens, the Bill of Rights serves to protect the people from a too powerful government. These civil rights granted to U.S. Citizens are included in the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, Locke’s ideas about checks and balances and the division of church and state were later embodied in the U.S. Constitution as well. The Constitution replaced a more weakly organized system of government as outlined under the Articles of Confederation.
The church’s robust grip on religious expression shattered as medieval society transitioned into a period known as the Reformation. Characterized by the rejection of common ideology, the Reformation sparked religious curiosity. Reformers such as John Calvin and Martin Luther offered interpretations of the Bible in direct opposition to the Catholic Church’s teachings, forcing Europeans to examine and formulate their own beliefs. This style of thinking was foreign to European society because up to this point in history Europeans were passive absorbers of Catholic Church ideology. Hence, it was natural that an era considered the Age of Enlightenment followed the period of rejection and questioning known as the Reformation. The Age of Enlightenment did not merely confine itself to religious expression, but spread throughout natural and social science. Thus, the Age of Enlightenment marked the beginning of academic and religious philosophy and allowed great minds to think free from restriction and condemnation of established institution. Immanuel Kant’s theory of ethics is rooted in deontology. Describing Kant’s ethics as deontological means that they are derivative of mankind’s moral duty. For Kant, this critical component of ethics is an extension of Hume’s fork as it creates a third category, which is synthetic Apriori. This category is comprised of math, ethics and causality. His rules-based ethics revolves around the good will, as deontology in its nature revolves around adhering to the rules. Kant says that intelligence is great by nature, but means very little unless you apply them in virtuous and good will. In order for something to be truly good, it must be intrinsically good and without qualification.
