Recommended: Weaknesses in writing skills

I feel that Montclair State University English Writing course had benefited me having a great ability as a writer. When I first started English writing 106 I was very confused because it was a new writing style introduced to me. This writing style was never introduced to me during my high school year and it was very hard for me to master on my own. The essays that I wrote during this semester had really challenged my writing. When it came to Analysis text it was a different level to improve my writing and understand what I had read. From paper one through four it took me time, effort and different ideas from family and friends to write a dissent paper that would allow me to pass the course by the end of the semester. My writing had improve from the beginning of this course to the end of the course. I had ups and downs writing all of my papers for example paper 3 I consider it was the hardest paper I had to write during the semester. The only problem I had during this semester it was that I never went to get help to improve my writing. What I had learn was that almost everyone struggle when it comes to writing a paper. Most writer have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing. My main weaknesses as a writer was that I never look for help always done everything by myself. Also, that’s one of the main reason why I had struggle writing Analyze essay. For paper four I was very happy because I had gotten many suggestions and ideas for the last paper by my family and friends during the last few week of the semester. Another, weakness that I had during this course was not being confident of my work and not understanding what the text used to mean in a different perspective.     This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities.     For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs.     During the course of this class, I have had the opportunity to read literature from authors who come from different backgrounds and places in the world. Some of the stories and poetry we read were straight forward while others were confusing and sometimes required a second look. But one thing is clear, it changed the way I think about literature in a few ways that I wasn’t expecting. Three works in particular stand out in my mind. “ I Wont Let You Go” by Rabindranath Tagore, “To New York” by Leopold Senghor, and Pedro Peramo by Juan Rulfo all had an impact on my thinking for similar yet different reasons. They all incorporate their cultural backgrounds into their work through the setting of their pieces. They also compose their pieces in a way that makes you want to research their history to find the deeper meaning. Finally, a couple of the authors write about things they are emotionally connected to. Some of the examples we will look at, really opened my eyes to going beyond a superficial understanding of literature.
