I have never been good at english and I have always needed help, particularly with some essays. Depending on what that topic is, I could do a good job but more often I need my essays to be looked over. This quarter, I have been having many assignments in my english class that are in fact essays. I was unsure about an essay that was assigned about two weeks ago, so after I had written my rough draft, I went to visit my English teacher during her office hours. The fact that my teacher is so nice and friendly also made it easier for me to actually attend here office hours and ask her questions about my essay. I specifically asked her questions about my introduction and conclusion, since those are the main parts of my essay that I was iffy about.
I took the previous course at a junior college, and my instructor wasn’t as qualified and didn’t identify exactly what she wanted in the writing assignment. I would go to her office hours and ask her what I needed to do on my essays to improve my letter grade, and she would do the revisions and say my paper was “great” and still give me a “C” on the assignment. Unlike, ENGL 1302 when I went to office hours my instructor always explained what I needed to improve on and advise me towards pages in the St. Martin’s Handbook as instructions to follow. My instructor was always helpful and patient at answering all questions I had towards a particular assignment. The University Writing Center also helped me with some weaknesses found throughout my literature review and word choice.
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
I am concerned about the type of writing that will be done in English 1101, rhetoric writing is one of my weaker areas of English mostly due to the fact that I have a scientific mindset, I do best when the facts are presented to me. As I sat down in class on Tuesday my mind was rushing to remember when was the last time I wrote a paper which involved the writer’s opinion and not just facts, sadly none came to mind. During my short time on this earth all of my previous teachers specifically stated not to use first person and cut our thoughts out of our writing. My previous experiences will ultimately fail me unless I change my mindset, glancing over the syllabus I did notice that some facts might creep in to aid, particularly when it comes to arguing, facts will reinsure my rhetoric will have an impact on the audience. I can expect for this course to challenge me, it will be roller coaster, having its ups and downs, predominantly in the areas of understanding and answering the prompt, but in the end I am confident it will increase my writing skills by at least ten fold.
While i was in class i just reread my paper to see if there was anything mistakes that i may have overlooked. I also ask my teacher how to indent my second line. My teacher told me to google and ask my classmates. I finally figure it out on YouTube. Once class was over i went back to the writing center to have a fresh paper of eyes look over my paper. Thomas Parker one of the writing tutors had reviewed my paper and gave me some advice on how to construct my agreement essay better.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
English 102 taught me a variety of important lessons. In one aspect, I learned how to work better with others. Similarly, the literary research paper deepened my understanding of other cultures. Lastly, my writing abilities have improved. The assignments and projects were an effective means of providing learning and growth.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. In order to have a passing final grade my essays need to display skills I have learned in the course that are required by the Portfolio Assessment Rubric or
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
As an educator, I know that not all students progress at the same rate. Some students are unable to learn as quickly as others are, while some students grasp the material with ease. While teaching the class in general at a regular pace, I, as an instructor, have an obligation to create modifications in order to accommodate the needs of both the slower learners and the gifted learners.
An effective lesson always comes with a good planning before the lesson (Nesamalar, Saratha & Teh, 2005). A good Language Arts lesson plan takes into account the purpose of the literary text and teaching-learning activities that are chosen should engage the pupils in authentic and meaningful activities and parallel to the best pedagogical principles of teaching young learners (Monoranjan, Bharati & Jayasri, 2013). Therefore, this reflection is on the experience of developing a lesson plan about pedagogical principles in relation to using songs in the primary ESL classroom. This reflection will also discuss about the new found realisations or perspectives on planning and actual teaching.
In high school, English was my strongest and favorite subject. I never had to work as hard in English as I did in math or any other subjects I took in high school. My peers would cram all night for a Literature test we were going to have but not I. I excelled in writing essays about Moby Dick and his white Whale or Beowulf and Grendel. My confidence in my ability to write was always high and when I enrolled at Chattahoochee, I assumed my confidence would not waiver. When I received my grade for my first paper, I was in shock of all the red ink that covered it. English 1101 taught me the skills I needed to have to be able to write a great paper and prepared me for what was to come for English 1102. English 1102 have taught me to rethink my abilities as a writer and to work harder and spend more time on my essays and think outside the box.
