Introduction
There are two objectives in throughout this case study. The first objective is to know the profile of students speaking and learning skill after the application of the Direct Method. Then, the second one is to describe the effectiveness or the outcome of using the Direct Method in teaching in teaching numbers 1-10 in the Pohnpeian language.
The subject of my case study is a student by the name of Rhonda. Rhonda is a 6th grade student at Pavaiai Elementary school. In school and at home, she is a slow learner. Background of the Problem
English is one of the languages in the world that is used by many people in most countries. This is why the main reason that English has become one of the languages that must be learned in school or giving out instructions. English is also an international language that is used by many people in the world. English may be majority of people’s second language, but English also has a basic skill that must be owned by the language. Language skills must be mastered by listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Speaking skills becomes a reason to measure a person’s skill.
In this case, I will be focusing on speaking skills using the Direct Method. Speaking skill is a language skill that is very important. People are always speaking to communicate, therefore, the first skill is communicating. The second implication involves building the language rather than receiving it. Lastly, in speaking, people do not need to master all of the grammar, they only speak at a basic language to communicate.
In Samoa, people start to learn English either at an early age, or being taught in school. In this case, Rhonda, who learned English in school, has the same problem in speaking. For example, Rhonda sometimes is shy to speak, less self confidence in speaking English, low motivation or afraid in making a grammar mistake. In the case study, Jim Colbert, a third grade teacher, struggles to help a boy named Carlos. This Public School 111 was located in a metropolitan, run down neighborhood. The school was surrounded by drug dealers and trash. However, the inside of the school was bright and welcoming. Such methodology is applied not only in the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics, but also in practice-oriented fields such as environmental studies, social work, education and business studies. In the research will try to capture the essence of case study methodology : firstly, by discussing the notions of “case study” and “case”. Secondly, by tracing its history; and finally, by making explicit its most characteristic features. The notions of “case study” and “case”. There are different ideas about what case study is. If try to find a common denominator that case study researchers (Yin 1994; Merriam 1994; Stake 1995,1998; Miles and Huberman 1994; Gillham 2001) might agree on, it would be something along the following lines: The study should have a “case” which is the object to study. The “case” should, be a complex functioning unit, be investigated in its natural context wit a multitude of methods, and must be contemporary.
When a case study is conducted, the researcher conducts an in-depth observation on a particular individual for an extended period of time. While observing the individual, the researcher records their observations which are then translated into case materials that are used to demonstrate a possible problem (American Psychological Association, 2009). Also, as mentioned before, case studies are solely focused on observations of a particular individual. However, even though the word individual is usually used to refer to a person, in this case, it can also be used to refer to a business, school, or neighborhood (Cozby & Bates, 2012).
In the first assignment of Research Skills (Studio Pathway), we have to explain some terms in research. Every student has to choose 5 terms. 5 research terms that interested me are Case Study, Literature Review, Primary Source, Secondary Source, and Survey.
Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby is a character introduced as “passive, security-minded and pragmatic” who lacks the gall to leave her husband for Jay Gatsby. My reflection was on a group book club which started with going to meet Dina Told, at her home in a living room. Dina helps teach reading and comprehension to children. The project took off as a summer camp in her yard’s gazebo. When it starts getting cold the group goes inside her house. The group sessions changed every month from house to house of members only. Sometimes the group meets at the library, bookstores, and parks. The observation was performed with the approval of each child’s parent that only asked to change their child’s names upon doing this study.

A language with rather humble roots, one that has been twisted and bent, one that has taken and borrowed from other languages, and one that has been the subject of much debate as to the correctness of certain usages, today English is the language that the world uses to communicate. The world uses English for a variety of reasons from commerce and trade, to political decisions, to technology and science, and beyond. The entire world uses English to get business done. Thus it truly has become the lingua franca for the world.
Based on the number of people who use it as a language and its easy nature to learn, English is the best candidate as the global language, which should facilitate communication in the changing environment. This draws the line between English and other languages whose usage is predominant across Europe and parts of Asia. In terms of numbers and effectiveness in learning, English is more superior to other languages.
Experiencing those days where people would laugh at other for the broken English; the grammar and pronunciation are the toughest parts of the language. People with English as a second language always stumble upon difficulties; however, the determination of learning a new language do not decrease easily as the motivation is still surrounding one’s mind. Today, English has become an international communication; even the teaching and learning of the language has already spread throughout the world. English is known as one of the most common use language and has been offering classes everywhere for years especially around Asia; additionally, the world common language has now become the number one language uses in every fields of career that is being offer everywhere. Today we are all observing an aspect of globalization which is the increasing movement of people from one country to another for different purposes, such as education, desire for a better life, the need for employment, escape from conflicts between groups including oppression of one group by another, or natural disasters. During the training, communication skill plays a major role in making my work succeed. I need to use the skill in order to convince my higher up to receive and accept my work. Talk fluently also important in order to make sure our ideas and message to be delivered well. This give me chance to improve my communication skill.
