English Assessment- West Side Story, Romeo and Juliet
Scene- America
1. What is the content found in this scene?
West Side Story is set in the late 1950’s and portrays the times and racism found in New York City caused by the immigration at the time. The song found during this scene, ‘America’ jokingly represents the current situation. The scene shows the Sharks with their girlfriends comparing the advantages of Puerto Rico and the United States when Anita argues with Bernardo that he is too overprotective of Maria. There are two groups- Bernardo and the other boys and Anita and the other girls have an argument whilst singing and dancing trying to prove whether America or Puerto Rico is better.

The two main characters of these texts are deeply in love, but their different backgrounds and races separate them. In both texts they show that love is the strongest force that nothing can pull two lovers away. The Puerto Ricans and the Americans in West Side Story represent the modern day version of the Montagues and the Capulets and in both texts the lovers are separated by something physical. In Romeo and Juliet they were separated by the balcony and in West Side Story the bars became a barrier for Tony and Maria. These physical separations both appear as an obstacle between two lovers while they confess their love to each other. Both Juliet and Maria called back into their rooms by a woman and they turn away from their lover wanting more. A technique used to display the young love happening between the characters of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet is portraying the idea of innocence in Maria and Juliet. Maria’s innocence of being young and unaware of the idea of being in love can be seen through her attire of wearing white, whereas Juliet’s innocence comes from the idea of jumping into a relationship and moving too fast. In both texts the lovers meet through a dance they are reluctant to go initially go to and they fall in love at first sight. A technique used to emphasise the two’s meeting in the similar texts is the use of lighting and as if everyone around them disappeared for a second. Throughout these texts, love has played as the main theme and has seemed to show from the beginning right to the end as at least one of the lovers are killed off by
...and Juliet, when they marry, must marry secretly because of the feud. However, Maria and Tony do not marry, although they do perform a mock wedding. Another example of a difference is that Anita purposely tells the Jets that Maria is dead because of her hatred for them. But when Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, he does it without knowing that it isn’t true. The last major difference between the two works is the death of the heroine. Juliet kills herself because she knows that her Romeo is dead and she cannot live without him. However, Maria is left alive at the end of West Side Story. It is almost as though she does not die so that she can accuse society of its prejudicial attitude against the Puerto Ricans and reveal everyone’s role in her and Tony’s love story.
West Side Story, a film directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, is a relatively modern adaptation of William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. As both, the film and text, explore the perceptions of deep-rooted feud between two parties, it also includes the influence and pressure it has on young love. Although numerous similarities are encountered throughout the play and movie, there are distinguished concepts obtaining great difference. However, the two mediums of this tragic love story have three prominent issues of story, themes and characters instilling both similar and dissimilar concepts.
1. Riff- He is the leader of the Jets. Founded it with Tony. A wild man that acts like a punk and dies in a fight.
The romantic tension between Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria in Shakespears original play and its modern day remake, Westside Story, is what makes them have such passionate and entrancing scenes. The main reason for romantic tension in these two plays is because the two couples can’t be together like they want to be. There are many different aspects that create different quality of romantic tension in these two scenes. Although the two plays have similar plots, the romantic tension between the two lovers is very different because of the setting, the language and the circumstances in which the lovers face.
This presented a huge challenge to the creators. West Side Story, for the first time in a musical, exposed the harsh reality that things don’t always work out and sometimes hatred has the final say. It’s a painful universal truth that we can still pluck out of today’s headlines.... ... middle of paper ... ...
West Side Story The drama/musical, which parodies the story of Romeo & Juliet, takes place in a city in New York, probably in the early 50’s or late 40’s. It is a tale of two rival gangs, who despise the other in a vicious circle of hate. Riff leader of the Jets; a group mainly of Polish origin and the Sharks of Spanish origin with their leader Bernardo. It seems as though the two rivals have been at their quarrels since before the story took place.
The love that Maria and Tony have shows their willingness to sacrifice for each other no matter the circumstances. Despite being from two different gangs, Tony and Maria go through great lengths to see their relationship blossom. In the musical, there are several instances when Tony and Maria meet secretly without their friends or families knowing. Understanding the consequences of being caught, they still felt a profound love for each other that could not keep them apart. Maria sacrificed her entire life with her family and friends to run away with Tony. Her love was the priority and nothing else mattered except Tony. Tony was also willing to sacrifice for Maria as he puts her before his family, friendships, and values. Love brought these two together made their relationship strong against the will of others in their lives. In the musical West Side Story, and play Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Romeo display many similar
In West Side Story, the premise is quite similar. The two rival gangs are the Jets- the Americans, and the Sharks- the Puerto Ricans. The Jets hate the sharks because they feel as if they are encroaching on their territory when they walk the streets of New York as easily as the Jets. The Jets and the Sharks have been in a constant state of uproar since the Puerto Ricans first started moving to America and the gangs were formed.... ...
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
A main theme in West Side Story is racism. The Jets' sole reason for not liking the Sharks is simply based on the fact that they are Puerto Rican. Even as little kids, we have this natural instinct to fear things we don’t understand. The Jets were intimidated by the Sharks mostly because they didn’t act like them, look the same, or have the same beliefs as them. The same can be said for the Sharks, and it’s because of these differences that these two groups of people were willing to physically hurt each other, even to the point of death. These types of things still happen all the time. People still don’t know how to put aside their differences to find the things they
In the tremendous play of ‘Romeo & Juliet’, Shakespeare’s ways engages the audience straight away. The astounding methods he uses hooks the audience into the play and allows them to read on, wondering what will happen. The tragic love story of Romeo & Juliet, as mentioned in the prologue, sets a variety of themes throughout Act 1 Scene 5. Many of the recognisable themes are: youth and age, revenge, forbidden love, fate, action and hate. The main idea of the play is a feud that had been going on between two families, The ‘Montagues and Capulets’, the son of the Montagues and the daughter of the Capulets fall in love and the story tells us how tragic, death, happiness and revenge find them throughout the play.
In West Side Story, as the camera swings grandly down out of the sky, the audience discovers the Jets, a gang of tough kids, twitching restlessly in a playground park. As the camera continues to descend it captures bodies moving gracefully and fiercely in frequent spontaneous bursts of dance. As the strong blend of drama, dance, and music unfolds, the story of the Sharks and the Jets and their endless fighting begins to unfold as West Side Story. The film tells the story of two of New York City’s rival gangs, the Sharks (a Puerto Rican gang) and the Jets (a white European Immigrant gang), and their endless feuding. Both gangs are continu...
Both stories represent both sides of bilingualism as far as Puerto Ricans who live in the United States and then move to Puerto Rico, and Puerto Ricans who move to the United States from Puerto Rico. The linguistic clashes that these girls encountered were frustrating to their new knowledge of the culture and language. Although, these girls are Puerto Rican, it is important to state that they were not all born on the Island.
The play West Side Story takes place in a suburb on the West Side of

The Information system advances so rapidly that at times it is too difficult to keep up with it without proper knowledge and experience. While most of the people do get a relatively easy entry in the field after under graduation, it is very difficult to aim for a constant growth only on that basis.
