I am concerned about the type of writing that will be done in English 1101, rhetoric writing is one of my weaker areas of English mostly due to the fact that I have a scientific mindset, I do best when the facts are presented to me. As I sat down in class on Tuesday my mind was rushing to remember when was the last time I wrote a paper which involved the writer’s opinion and not just facts, sadly none came to mind. During my short time on this earth all of my previous teachers specifically stated not to use first person and cut our thoughts out of our writing. My previous experiences will ultimately fail me unless I change my mindset, glancing over the syllabus I did notice that some facts might creep in to aid, particularly when it comes to arguing, facts will reinsure my rhetoric will have an impact on the audience. I can expect for this course to challenge me, it will be roller coaster, having its ups and downs, predominantly in the areas of understanding and answering the prompt, but in the end I am confident it will increase my writing skills by at least ten fold. I’ve always have struggling with understand the prompt and answering it fully, I have taught myself to type what pops in and head and edit as I go, usually it takes me twenty or so minutes to ponder just enough to kick start me into …show more content…
the introduction of the essay. After I finish thinking about the introduction I imagine in my mind how I will continue the essay, which topic should I cover first second and so on. During this time, I ensure that the thesis of the paper has adequately covered each part of the prompt, if not I go back and reconsider the whole introduction as a whole. Shortly after I finish writing the introduction and some of the first paragraph the whole paper slowly unveils inside my mind just like a sunrise, slowly appearing more and more as time goes on and before I know it the sun and paper have unveil themselves to me. Even though this process seems easy and short it does frustrate me, it is scary experience, not knowing what will happen until you reach the end, will I excel or will I fail? My skills in English isn’t above par, average at best, mostly due to my strong dislike of books and reading.
English is vast you can create your own answers, which irritates my science and math like mind set, I want all the answers, I want a set way of doing stuff a step by step guide of getting to one correct answer. However, this course might be able to loosen my mind and notice that in English there can be more than one correct answer. I surely do believe that I can excel in Professor’s Grahams’ English 1101, but only if I work for it and earn an A. The class seems like a lot of work but because of the work load but the type of rigor it takes to complete the
work. All in all, my previous experiences in English classes will generally come short when it comes to Professor’s Grahams class, other than the fact that I was exposed to plenty of work. My main concern is that I do not excel it is not because of my lack of work ethic but my lack of understanding the content. English 1101 with Professor Graham seems to have a twist, a different perspective on writing which will surely expand my ability in writing effective papers on rhetoric and public policy, a type of writing that I have never experienced before. I truly believe that this class will test me and I expect at the end of the test that my work ethic will match my grade at the end of the semester. I’m more than excited to see what’s in store for me during this spring semester.
In English 1102, I was exposed to a variety of different genres, including, argumentative research paper, an annotated bibliography, an analytical paper, and a workplace specific piece. Entering this class the majority of papers I had written were all analytical, and in this class we went above and beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay. Though each paper had a different genre and style, I learned that each project was similar in composition.
As a Science major I am not given the opportunity to explore my imagination; everything that I learn is factual and unquestionable. English 1301 gave me a voice of my own, this course made me understand that the best way to discover knowledge and wisdom is through reading and interacting with literature. Prior to taking this course I struggled with different writing skills such as, understanding the process of writing, analyzing reading selection and applying basic critical thinking skill in an argumentative essay. I also struggled with the analysis of specific content in professional writing, identifying rhetorical strategies and synthesizing concepts from references. Lucky for me my professor was extraordinarily skilled and provided me with
English 1302 has been a valuable learning experience. It has helped me improve my writing skills and build an outline for my writing assignments. Also, it has allowed me to gain more confidence in my writing by being able to develop and express my ideas more clearly. If I could continue with this course, I would. The literature review was an assignment that allowed me to correct a lot of my writing mistakes, such as not having a proper outline to follow, and word choice. For example, on my first literature review draft one of my topic sentences reads “Stem cells have brought hope to cancer patients….” transformed into “Research has shown that stem cells have brought hope to cancer patients....”The first year writing textbook helped me alot in completing most of my assignments. The examples available on the textbook are a wonderful tool. In the researched argument, I learned how to process a more
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
In the beginning of this semester, English 1302 seemed as though it would be the subject that would be the toughest for me to pass. The pace, the work load and everything in between seemed overwhelming for me. As time proceeded to pass, the course didn’t seem as overpowering. By taking the work one step at a time, it simply became another step to achieve the overall goal of this first half of the semester. I have made improvements as well as learned lessons from my mistakes made along the way.
In order to succeed in something, you must know what is expected, have the materials needed and give fourth the effort to do the best of your ability. According to the English 111 syllabus, this course is designed to develop student’s writing ability so that they can portray a clearer message within their writing.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
After analyzing the course syllabus for English 1101 Composition and Rhetoric, it’s to my understanding that in order to be successful in the class we must first have the necessary text books; which include “Back to the Lake” by Cooley Thomas, and “The Little Seagull Handbook” by Richard Bullock and Michal Brody. This course will expand my knowledge of reading and comprehension. This course will enhance my use of correct grammar, and my skills to write and analyze essays. It is expected of me to attend every class, and to be on time. Make up work as well as late assignments are non existent and not negotiable, unless brought to the professors’ attention ahead of time. It is required of me to complete four essays, one research paper, and have
During English 1102 I learned lots of new things. I learned many things that I did not learn in high school or in my English 1101 class. From reading, researching, to writing Dr. Nevil taught everything that any college writer would need to know.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
As I reflect back on my education, I realize how much I took for granted. I thought graduating from high school was sufficient. I realized that my lack of education was not going to help support my family. I decided to go back to school. I attended a technical college and received a certificate in computer accounting. This gave me the experience in accounting that helped me get my foot in the door. While working in the accounting field, I discovered quickly that I needed a bachelor’s degree. After much procrastination, I decided it was time to return to school. After a few accounting courses, I was informed that I still needed to take my general education classes. This meant I had to take English. I dreaded taking English 1101. I knew this class would be more challenging than my accounting courses. English 1101 taught me how to organize my thoughts and compile them to create well-versed essays.
When we talk about English 1110, everyone actually knows the main part of the course is writing. The goal of this class is to improve structural, style of writing, thoughts and performances of students. During this semester, the curriculum includes essays and topics from many different aspects of different issues which are useful to me. From this class, I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. For example, before writing a paper, I always have outline, strategies, arranging and modifying as well as finding ideas to improve my writing style in a better way. Before taking English 1101, I just wrote essay with what I think of that time and did not care whether my essay is understandable or not; however, i have been improved for the past three months. When I see a title, I start to write down all ideas and also create an outline and order of all documents in a reasonable manner. In addition, all response papers that I have done during this semester I started to have different way of thinking by listening my friend's arguments, feedbacks or comments, agreements or disagreements. Those group activities from friends were helpful because I started to recognize what are right and wrong things in my essay. From there, I have my own personal opinions and defend my arguments.
With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
In the English 102, we completed two main projects and many informal writings so far, whether about the personal idea, research paper or feedbacks, those many writing push me up to new level about writing, I mean I improved a lot in the grammar area, pathos, logic and ethos which are all the important parts in writing.
I have never been good at english and I have always needed help, particularly with some essays. Depending on what that topic is, I could do a good job but more often I need my essays to be looked over. This quarter, I have been having many assignments in my english class that are in fact essays. I was unsure about an essay that was assigned about two weeks ago, so after I had written my rough draft, I went to visit my English teacher during her office hours. The fact that my teacher is so nice and friendly also made it easier for me to actually attend here office hours and ask her questions about my essay. I specifically asked her questions about my introduction and conclusion, since those are the main parts of my essay that I was iffy about.
