English 102 taught me a variety of important lessons. In one aspect, I learned how to work better with others. Similarly, the literary research paper deepened my understanding of other cultures. Lastly, my writing abilities have improved. The assignments and projects were an effective means of providing learning and growth. For the contemporary novel project I worked with Noah. We decided beforehand how we would split the work to get it done. At first it was hard for me to be comfortable with having part of my grade in someone else’s hands and I stressed about whether or not he would finish in time. In the end, I was able to learn to let go and trust that he would complete his part of the assignment. Like the contemporary novel project, I
learned from doing the literary research paper. I have always been enchanted with the story of Cinderella. As a child, my mom read me cinderella stories from different cultures but I never really understood the significance. When I was able to analyze various cinderella stories I saw how much they reflect the culture they are from. It taught me that while cultures have many aspects that differ, many aspects are similar; all have the same fairy tales of heros and magic. People in all cultures love to hear tales of characters that rise above their struggles and they hope that they will have the strength and courage to be like their favorite fairytale characters. All the projects taught me how to be a better writer. The stories we read were good examples of how to be a more effective writer. I have learned more about the importance of using imagery in creative writing from stories like “A&P.” The way John Updike used imagery to describe the store and town was inspiring. Likewise, I learned from Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” how to tell a story with a powerful lesson. He taught the power of nature over mankind using fantastic imagery. I learned from many of the other stories and poem we read in class. In conclusion, English 102 taught me valuable life skills. I learned about trusting team members. Cinderella taught me that cultures are different but people are just people no matter what their background and culture. Furthermore, I learned how to be a better writer from reading the works of various authors. I am grateful for the life lessons I learned in English 102.
English 122 has been a challenging class for me to learn about my writing and researching techniques. This essay is about how the assignments help me with my writing and which assignments are challenging for me.
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
I am concerned about the type of writing that will be done in English 1101, rhetoric writing is one of my weaker areas of English mostly due to the fact that I have a scientific mindset, I do best when the facts are presented to me. As I sat down in class on Tuesday my mind was rushing to remember when was the last time I wrote a paper which involved the writer’s opinion and not just facts, sadly none came to mind. During my short time on this earth all of my previous teachers specifically stated not to use first person and cut our thoughts out of our writing. My previous experiences will ultimately fail me unless I change my mindset, glancing over the syllabus I did notice that some facts might creep in to aid, particularly when it comes to arguing, facts will reinsure my rhetoric will have an impact on the audience. I can expect for this course to challenge me, it will be roller coaster, having its ups and downs, predominantly in the areas of understanding and answering the prompt, but in the end I am confident it will increase my writing skills by at least ten fold.
English 1020 has enhanced my reading, writing, researching and reflecting skills by giving me the opportunity to practice writing, reading, and reflect on diverse topics. My perception of writing was also positively impacted by taking this course. I now view myself as skillful writer rather than just a college student taking writing courses to pursue my degree. I have become a skillful writer because I now take in consideration prior knowledge and new information I have gained from English 1020. I put into practice these skills whenever I write content relating to the four learning outcomes. Reading, writing, researching and reflecting are the four learning outcomes I utilized during the
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. In order to have a passing final grade my essays need to display skills I have learned in the course that are required by the Portfolio Assessment Rubric or
When I first began English 098 my writing was horrible, I misused commas, and had incomplete sentences. I had no idea of any prewriting strategies. I had no idea how to write a good paper. I look at papers and essays now and have enjoyment rather than when I first started English 098 and hated reading and writing. English 098 has taught me many important writing techniques. I now know important steps to starting a paper, how to write a firm thesis statement, and how to write an argument essay.
English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course.
During this first/semester of college I found English 101 a lot different from English in high school. In high school, English was more reading based, and college was my writing based. I tend to favor writing more because I really despise reading. Since English 101 is more writing based, I feel like I did improve on my writing skills a bit because I learned topics like rhetorical analysis and rhetorical situations in a more in depth way. Since I did not practice writing as much in high school, I think my writing skills weren’t very polished because I didn’t have much practice before college. In this class, I feel like I learned how important it is to stay organized in writing, developing a thesis, and determining the tone.
Before my senior year I was a high C low B student doing the bear minimum in all my classes and definably wasn’t college ready. I heard a rumor that AP English 4 was the hardest course at my high school so being stubborn person I was I decided to enroll in it. I remember walking into that class the first day and seeing a two headed demon baby doll among a collection of weird creepy dolls and I knew that I made a mistake. The teacher wore all black and contently discouraged us by telling us that a good chunk of us will drop the class before the semester ends. I constantly struggled with keeping up with the content because of my bad study habits I acquired over the years like procrastination and being unorganized but I made a great effort to
...larify the structure and destination in which I was headed. By revising my essays I was able to make the content and message seem more important and made the final drafts seem a slight degree better than the originals, but the finals were better nonetheless. The instructor did a very good job in guiding me and helping find my way into writing by focusing on some of the problems I was facing and clarified them so that I would better understand them. The instructor helped me expand on my grammatical by helping me discover what it was that I lacked while constructing basic sentence structure; the usage of commas and semi-colons, quotations, and how to sight titles of books and articles within an essay. This English 101 course I have attended has helped me develop better writing skills as well as helped me create more profound essays and a very satisfying research paper.
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
When I reflect back to the beginning of this semester I am astonished at how much I have learned. English 124 has been a real eye opener for me. Not only have I grown as a writer, but it has challenged me to become more of a critical thinker. In the class we have read many articles on diverse topics, studied theories of history’s greatest philosophers of education, and wrote various styles of papers.
In high school, English was my strongest and favorite subject. I never had to work as hard in English as I did in math or any other subjects I took in high school. My peers would cram all night for a Literature test we were going to have but not I. I excelled in writing essays about Moby Dick and his white Whale or Beowulf and Grendel. My confidence in my ability to write was always high and when I enrolled at Chattahoochee, I assumed my confidence would not waiver. When I received my grade for my first paper, I was in shock of all the red ink that covered it. English 1101 taught me the skills I needed to have to be able to write a great paper and prepared me for what was to come for English 1102. English 1102 have taught me to rethink my abilities as a writer and to work harder and spend more time on my essays and think outside the box.
