One of my biggest challenges in English 101 has been the lack of confidence in my writing. Whenever I have writing assignment, I get anxious about the entire process. I have hard time organizing and choosing the right information to put in my paper. Also, I have a writer’s block. I think I have these problems mainly because I do not have previous writing experience. I got my first exposer of college-paper writing when I came to the University of Maryland’s Summer Transitional Program (STP). STP helped me tremendously with my reflective writing. During STP I had to write a lot of self-reflection papers, and because of it now I feel confident and have no anxiety when it comes to reflective writing. However, I still have anxiety when it comes
to research based paper. My English 101 teacher has been really helpful, he knows the materials and teaches them in a way I understand. My English teacher seems very calm and answers all the questions about assignments. I talked to my instructor about having writer’s block and anxiety and he encouraged me to keep using free-writing process. Free writing has been really helpful with my reflective writings. However, there are still other challenges when it comes to writing research papers. For example, finding and implementing right sources into my paper. Also, I have problem organizing and implementing smooth transitions between paragraphs. My plan to improve my writing for the the rest of the semester is by figuring out what kind of writer I am and what I need to do in order to get better. Once I figure what kind of writer I am, I will experiment with different strategies to be as productive as possible. English Labs can help me overcome my challenges by continue to do some of the activities we have been doing, for example, grammar lessons and teach the class. With grammar lesson I was able to understand where to use commas and apostrophe. It gave me confidence with my sentence writing and teach the class helped me understand what makes a writing an academic writing. English labs could help me even more by having discussing session, where students talk about the strategies they use for writing research papers. Also, English Labs could help me overcome my challenges by helping me find the sense of urgency when it comes to writing assignment without being anxious.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
The purpose of the English 250 course was to help students like myself realize the importance of all aspects of WOVE in their daily lives and future careers. In addition to writing papers, we practiced slideshow presentations, discussion panels, web design, and professional emails. The assignments and in-class activities for English 250 formed me into a skilled communicator in the WOVE areas of visual and oral communication, and I plan to continue practicing these skills through the communication that is necessary for future leadership opportunities.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. I am always a little nervous and hesitant when I begin writing an essay. Ever since I was little I was an honor roll student, passed all my tests, was placed in honors and AP classes, and eventually graduated a year early from high school. I used to be so confident when I would begin writing a paper, I could finish it within a couple minutes. During junior year of high school, I began taking duel credit classes. I was passing all the classes so far until I reached English 111. It was an 8-week course and I started to get overwhelmed. All throughout the course I was having a little bit of trouble on the essays. I would still receive a passing grade, but it wasn’t an A. I began becoming a little discouraged and didn’t understand what was going
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. The English classes that I have taken over the course of my years in school have always been greatly enjoyable. Fortunately, I've been lucky to have had amazing teachers, more than eager to aid me in improving my writing. I believe that as far as my writing skills, there is always room for improvement. There will always be another vocabulary word to learn, or a writing style to master. Although I am not necessarily striving for perfection (I don't dream of being the next Mark Twain or F. Scott Fitzgerald), improving my personal best is what I am invariably working towards. This year in English 101 has served as a very significant step in my writing journey. It gave me a push into the “bootcamp” of college writing, while still retaining certain aspects of writing that I find truly enjoyable.
First off thanks Mr Cole for being an awesome instructor that I really enjoyed being in your English 101 class. My second quarter of English writing class in college has very challenged both my researching and writing skills. I learned a lot of about myself, and I realized that the main thing I needed to work on in all my papers was really analysing information rather than just reporting on it. One of the most things that I liked about you and your English 101 class was your editing and your media comments. They were really helpful, made me easier to understand and realize my strengths and my weaknesses from all my papers. I think my biggest strength is brainstorming and revising. I have learned that I should do lots of brainstorms, outlines and give myself more time to find things and revise all my rough drafts to make them better. On the other hand, I always was stuck in using the punctuation mark such as comma, period and semicolon in my papers. Moreover, grammatical mistakes were also my weakness because
Writing has never been my strongest suit. While I have always done sufficient in writing and english classes, math and science are subjects that I take to with more ease. Because of this preference I have never loved anything I have written, nor have I felt confident in showing others my assignments. Through AP Language and Composition as a junior in high school, I was introduced to many of the concepts I would later see in English 101, but neglected to understand them to the extent I now do. Learning how to properly analyze a piece of text or a picture for rhetoric would have been a chore in the past, yet through this class I have learned to enjoy putting together the puzzle pieces an author gives. While analysis came easily, and I quickly grew to enjoy it, synthesizing arguments and opposing views was more of a challenge. Consequently, it took many drafts and trial and error to grasp this concept and feel confident in the work I produced, but can proudly say I did so. In the first semester of English 101 we were required to surpass three course goals, in which my senior class did. The course goals enabled my senior class to be able to summarize, respond and synthesize. In college students are asked to write many papers, one of them being a research paper. Students are asked to summarize the information and respond to it, therefore adding in their thoughts. I have learned and comprehend all of the essentials of writing a paper. I know the difference between all of the course goals and can explain them to great lengths. However, synthesizing brings in all the components from other sources and links all the information together.
Honors English III taught me many skills that prove to benefit grades within all of my present and possibly future curriculum. I observed how my writing abilities became increasingly easier and less time consuming when completing a strong paragraph. Learning unfamiliar concepts displays the ability to adapt and thrive in new situations, which will be helpful in future career fields. This year I discovered a sense of pride through my accomplishments in the classroom, whether it be note taking or receiving an A on a test. I will miss sophomore English class, but I am excited to move on to junior year and further my skills in order to implement them to the real world.
