I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.

... effectively convey thoughts and ideas. These skills will be beneficial in any job an individual obtains after college. For example, a doctor would benefit greatly from a foreign language class. Many intercity hospitals cater to minorities that may only speak their native languages. If a physician were able to communicate with foreign patients it would make their job much easier and the patients more comfortable. English courses that develop writing skills will truly benefit all individuals. Communicating thoughts through writing will aid success in any field. Even blue-collar labor workers would benefit by having the knowledge of expressing concerns through a letter to a superior. While taking these courses one may not see how it will benefit them in the future. However, at some point one will draw from the knowledge or experience to assist them in their careers.

I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
For instance, my used of writing process knowledge during my analysis of Hemingway’s dialogue. During the beginning stages of this essay we spent the majority of class time reading through “Hills Like White Elephants” and looking for ways he used dialogue, as well as symbolism. As the paper progressed we would write a draft of one body paragraph then turn it in for our professor to read and as he would edit that draft we would work on another paragraph. This helped to make it easier to put the paper all together and edit it, it was able to help me improve on breaking my essay into chunks. The P.I. E outline was also used in this essay, this helped me to generate a general flow to the analysis. Secondly this paper helped me improve on Rhetorical Knowledge. In order to study and explain the ways Hemingway used symbolism in “Hills Like White Elephants” I had to understand the authors purpose. It taught me that when I find a piece of symbolism and go to explain it you have to include the little detail of what Hemingway wanted it to symbolize such as “The crops and river represent life to the girl as well as a new beginning. The man only sees the dry side of the valley, symbolizing how he does not want the child. However, the girl wants the child and believes that this can be the start of something new. Therefore, the reason she can see the crops and
Improving writing skills is critical to the college student’s success across all academic disciplines. Writing has become the key to survival in many fields of study. (Pirš1, Pirš1, & Kesié, 2011) There are several strategies to become an effective college-level writer. An important strategy for a writer is project management. Good reading skills are very important in learning languages. Reading improves spelling because as students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling comes easier. It helps to expand the vocabulary, since the best way to acquire a large vocabulary is to read. Students learn new words as they read and put them in their mind for later use. . They also unconsciously absorb the information about things like how to structure the sentences, how words are used in different contexts, and it gives a better understanding of the word usage and definitions than the cold facts of a dictionary. It improves a person’s vocabulary and knowledge without the person even knowing it. Even if students do not understand every word, they will hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they have heard. They can comprehend ideas, follow arguments and detect implications. Reading texts also provide good models for English writing. Krashen (2004) found that reading is extremely important in learning English, since it is the only way to “become a good reader, develop a good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammar” and the only way to “become a good speller”.
