How does Conan Doyle Engage the Readers Interest and imagination in
The Speckled Band
The Speckled Band is a story written by Conan Doyle, and is based on
the famous detective; Sherlock Holmes. It is a very exciting story,
and is filled with many twists and turns. Conan Doyle uses many
techniques to make this an interesting and exciting story throughout.
I decided to write about it because I thought that it was very
cleverly written and because the characters were very intriguing and
entertaining. The story is about a woman who goes to Holmes for help,
and she asks him to solve the mystery of her sister’s death. Holmes
accepts and starts to work straight away. He finds out that it was Dr.
Roylott who committed the murder, so that she would not get married
and inherit some of his fortune that her mother had promised each girl
when they get married.
The characters are entertaining, and make you want to read on. This
was shown when Sherlock Holmes met Dr. Roylott for the first time, and
when threatened and bullied by him, instead of cowering down, Holmes
grabbed the bar that Roylott was holding and bent it showing that he
also had power, and was not afraid. This was unexpected because Holmes
isn’t made out to be physically powerful before that point and it
comes unexpectedly. Holmes is also a very clever man. We notice this
many times during the story, but it is probably most notably shown
when they first meet Miss Stoner. This is because he tells us all
about the way that she has come to them by just looking at her, and
her clothing.
Throughout the story the reader is engaged by the question of the
relevance of “The Speckled Band”. This encourages the reader to read
on because they want to know what the Speckled Band is and why the
story was named after it. Conan Doyle uses mystery in the story to
create similar effects. When we find out that the bell rope is in the
room where Miss Stoner dies is fake along with the ventilator that
does not communicate with the outside world we begin to suspect murder
but we don’t know who it is yet so we want to read to the end, and
find out who it is and solve the mystery for ourselves. After
inspecting Miss Stoners room Holmes takes a look at Dr. Roylott’s room
which is the room that the ventilator in Miss Stoner’s room connects
to. In the Doctors room we find a safe which is suspicious because

In the story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” the author Conan Doyle portrays many different narrative techniques. He uses these techniques to provide meaning for the audience as well as help them visualize the situation that was being described. The different techniques used are narrative discourse, suspense, conflict, close, and focalization in his story. Narrative discourses are events, to describe a series of events that are contingent one on another. Typically focuses on one or more performers of actions. Personal experience can influence narrative discourse due to the explaining of significant events in the life of the narrator. Narrative discourse is made up of setting, developing
