Dating comes from the idea of setting a date where two people agree to get together at a certain date and time. This marks the process of building an intimate relationship with someone where attractiveness, propinquity, similarities and dissimilarities are ascertained. When a person finds someone with whom he would like to pursue a relationship with, they would go on a date. However, people have different reasons why they date, these reasons may range from recreation, intimacy and companionship, selection of mate, status attainment or just socialization.

Such people engage in dating in the hope that they will eventually find someone to marry for a committed relationship. This function acts as a predictor of stability in relationships (Lauer and Lauer, 2012). Everyone has traits that they would want in a future partner. In finding a mate, such people filter a number of people with whom they can go on dates with on the basis of propinquity, physical attraction, intelligence, similarities and differences from which they evaluate and decide who is a suitable mate. Others would purposely date to attain some status. Such people would only date if a relationship would enhance their wellbeing, status or prestige. Through this, they feel proud and can boast of their accomplishments besides portraying themselves as desirable individuals. Such people may opt to date a wealthy or prominent person to gain status. Finally, other people simply date for socialization purposes. Human beings being social animals, we ought to have the knowledge on how to interact with other people such how to get along with the opposite sex. We have to learn how to function in various groups. When they engage in a date, for instance through church functions, they are able to learn how to relate meaningfully to persons of the opposite sex, a skill which comes in handy in future long-term
