Soccer, also know by other names such as “football” and “futbol” is one of the most well known sports throughout the world. It has been around for many centuries. Though the game of football has been around for many centuries it did not appear in the Olympics until 1900’s. The first game was at Paris, and has been on the program ever since with the exception of Los Angeles in 1932 (Football Development, 2007). This sport continues to play a vital part in our competitions. As the sport progresses so do the energy demands and the training styles. Within the game of football the energy requirements are high and unique to each individual player and their position. The duration of matches last approximately 90 minutes. The rules of the game are fairly simple. The winning team is the team that has the most goals scored. A goal scored is when the entire ball passed over the goal line. If there is a tie there is away goals rule, extra time, and kicks from the penalty mark. In the case of Olympic football extra time is the most common. Extra time provides for two more periods of 15 minutes each allowing for additional goals to be made. Therefore whoever comes out with the most goals is the winner (Official Documents, 2012). The game of football is still heavily debated on because there is a lot of emphasis on the skills and technique it takes to play the sport rather than the physiological demands. Although this game is still very debated it is very clear that in this sport in order to win its heavily dependent upon goals, speed, and agility.
