I. What are "energy bars"?
Definition and Contents:
An energy bar is a convenient, fortified snack-food containing a blend of simple and complex carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. The primary source of protein in energy bars usually comes from milk and the fiber comes from grains and oats. Some bars also contain additional herbs, such as ginseng and guarana, "to help provide maximum energy" and to stimulate the central nervous system (http://s2.com.etj/ wn/sportsbars.html). Others include sodium and potassium phosphate to increase oxygen consumption capacity and to prevent lactic acid buildup in the muscles. The size of an energy bar varies with each brand and can range anywhere from one ounce to more than five ounces. The majority contain 100 to 300 calories and get most of these calories (at least 60 percent) from carbohydrates (Walsh 1997). The bars are usually easy to digest and come in a wide array of flavors and textures. Who are they for? Where are they found?
Energy bars are most often associated with top athletes and endurance sports, such as bicycling and running. Recently, however, they have started to attract outdoor enthusiasts, participants of team sports, and casual exercisers (McEvoy 1994). They are becoming so popular that even overweight individuals are eating them as a low-fat meal substitute (Runner's World 1994). Today they can be found almost anywhere: in sporting good stores, pharmacies, health food shops, and even several department stores (Lobb 1995).
When do you eat them?
Energy bars can be consumed before an event to ensure sufficient levels of muscle and liver glycogen (stored carbohydrate), during an event to stabilize or maintain blood sugar levels, or after an event to replace expended nutrients and to maximize recovery. II. Two main types of energy bars:
1. High-carbo group
Most energy bars are placed in this group because they are high in carbohydrates and low in proteins and fats. Producers of these bars argue that a high portion of carbohydrates provides "a superior source of fuel for endurance performance and that the fewer fat calories you ingest in a pre-workout, the better".
Are young athletes being pushed too far to always perform at higher and higher expectations? Taking vitamins are highly recommended by doctors, but there are some supplements that are illegal for use in high school sports. New pre-workout supplements cause new high school drug policies, research into both the active ingredients and short/long term effects of these products. Additionally, Wasserstrom even goes on to say that sex roles are analogous to human slavery. I read the book The Reconstruction: A Documentary History of the South after the War: 1865-1877 by James P. Shenton. James P. Shenton arrived at the University of Columbia at the age of 21 as a college freshman on the G.I. Bill. He finished his B.A. in three years and continued to finish his M.A. in 1950. In 1954 he finished his Ph. D all his accomplishments are in the subject of history. Professor Shenton arrived at Columbia University and never transferred anywhere else and eventually became a Professor on their campus. The context of this book is the years 1865 through 1877 which are the years after the civil war. This book made it a bit difficult to understand the order of the reconstruction of the south after the war but it did contain interesting and accurate information.

This paper will explore the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his companion and friend Dr. John Watson. What is the relationship between Holmes and Watson? The stories of Sherlock Holmes are a collection of short stories and fictional novels created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories are based on a famous and most notorious detective all throughout London, Sherlock Holmes. Along his side, Dr. Watson narrates his and Holmes’ detective cases and reveals Sherlock’s abilities and knowledge of solving cases and fighting deadly crimes. For the duration of the stories, Watson and Holmes share a particular relationship where Holmes verbally dominates Watson, “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is very clear” (Doyle 241). When he isn’t insulting Dr. Watson he talks about how much he relies on his partner, “I am lost without my Boswell” (Doyle 243).

Alcoholic energy drinks should not be legally sold in the United States because mixing alcohol and caffeine for consumption leads to dangerous consequences. Caffeine does not compensate for the effects of alcohol. Caffeine is a stimulant drug while alcohol is a depressant, and the two drugs do not cancel the effects of each other, although that idea is often misconstrued by drinkers. Consuming alcoholic energy drinks often leads to decreased perception of intoxication, impaired cognitive functioning, and increased risk for erratic behavior such as drunk driving or engaging in sexual behavior. As a full-time college student, it can be hard trying to balance a schedule in which consists of school, work, parenting (in some occasions), maintaining a social life and getting enough sleep, and then repeat the same process the following day. Which can be tiring on the long run for instance, for me to maintain active an entire day, I know I at least need to nap for just a few minutes. Do people actually understand the harm that energy drinks cause the human body? Millions of people around the world believe that energy drinks help them become more energized, but in reality they can cause more harm than good to the human body. More than 20,000 people have reported that they were hospitalized because of energy drinks, yet people continue to drink them because they became so addicted to the taste of the drink (ER). Energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure, cancer, reproductive problems, insomnia, heart palpitations and many more problems.
