Recommended: Poverty from a global perspective
Which theoretical perspectives are represented by the author’s treatment of the topic?
“Global poverty is the scourge and disgrace of our affluent era” (Smith 13). Eradicating extreme poverty has always been one of the greatest challenges in the world. In fact, today poverty has become a major concern for several nations. According to Stephen C. Smith, the author of book Ending Global Poverty: A Guide to What Works, ending poverty would require eight crucial keys to escape poverty traps; to provide health and nutrition for adults to work and children to grow to their potential, provide basic education to build the foundations for self-reliance, to provide credit and basic insurance for working capital and defense against risk, to allow access to functioning markets for income and opportunities to acquire assets, to allow access to new technologies for higher productivity, to provide a stable environment to ensure sustainable development, to provide personal empowerment to gain freedom from exploitation and to empower all communities to ensure effective participation in the wider world. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine the term, concept, and the theoretical perspectives about poverty that are represented by Stephen C. Smith as well as presenting aspects of the issue that I wish Smith had addressed, an emphasis of questions that the author leaves unanswered will be presented, and finally an exhortation on how believers should think about the issue and how believers should respond to the issue viewed in a cognitive, affective and behavioral perception.
To begin, Stephen Smith came up with the book Ending Global Poverty as a result of a simple question from his wife that was based on how they wanted to see their mon...

...hor offers a whole chapter where he answers several questions that people have come up with. One of my questions was: How much of an impact do we create in society by taking part in child sponsorship programs? Here, the author explains that he does not really encourage child sponsorship. He stresses that child sponsorship is not necessarily a strategy of education to reduce poverty. He explains, “People seem to identify much more with making an individual, personal connection, particularly with a child” (Smith, 174). Most of the time the assistance that we provide to a child goes to the child’s community rather than his education, so it is essential to find out the legitimacy of the organizations that sponsor children’s education.

Poverty is not just an issue reserved for third world countries. Instead, poverty is a multifaceted issue that even the most developed nations must battle
"I believe the only long-term solution to world poverty is business. That is because businesses produce goods, and businesses produce jobs. And businesses continue producing goods year after year, and continue providing jobs and paying wages year after year. Therefore if we are ever going to see long-term solutions to world poverty, I believe it will come through starting and maintaining productive, profitable businesses" (p. 81)
Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.
The photograph, “The World’s Highest of Living” is an informative photo taken by Margaret Bourke-White.There are many people targeted but the main group that is targeting are White Americans. The method of this photo is Irony of the American dream, it also is comparing this dream vs its reality. The purpose is to inform others with a quick glance. The photograph shows irony and vagueness that hooks you to dig deeper. Although vagueness can be bad the artist used this as an advantage. She put enough information that you want more and not enough so you would understand. Margret also uses irony with the statement “The World's Highest Standard of Living.” The combination of the two makes a perfect hook to drag people in.

This topic about helping poor people get out of poverty is a critical issue. Almost 800 million people across the globe, most of them children, live with hunger or malnutrition as a regular fact of life. They live in desperate poverty, which means they die younger than they should, struggle with hunger and disease, and live with little hope and less opportunity for a life of dignity (USCCB). Poverty poses a dramatic problem of justice; in its various forms and with its various effects, it is characterized by an unequal growth that does not recognize the "equal right of all people to take their seat ‘at the table of the common banquet' (Social Doctrine of the Church) ."

The 2008 documentary The End of Poverty? is a film that focuses around global poverty and how it became the tragedy that it is today. Poverty was created by acts of military conquest, slavery and colonization that led to the confiscation of individual’s property and forced labor. However, today the problem remains because wealthy countries who take advantage of developing third world countries. The film interviews several activists who discuss how the issues became and several ways in which they could be eliminated, as well as interviews from individuals who are experiencing it firsthand.
Many studies illustrate that high quality child care helps children who have been brought up in poverty to develop skills that enable better education, jobs and earnings (Adelman). It would help to reduce poverty if more parents would invest money `into high quality child care, because children would be able to learn the skills that they should know to get a good education. In an article entitled “9 Ways to Reduce Poverty,” Larry Adelman stated that “Investments in infrastructure—fixing old bridges, building mass transit, converting to clean energy sources—and investments in vital services such as schools, childcare and eldercare generate both public benefits and jobs.” Investments in the most important buildings and structures in a community would help to create job opportunities, which could benefit people who are in poverty by allowing them the opportunity to get a job. Poverty reduction would benefit the economy and the people who suffer from
Poverty is prevalent throughout the world around us. We watch television and see famous people begging us to sponsor a child for only ten dollars a month. We think in our own minds that ten dollars is only pocket change, but to those children and their families, that ten dollars is a large portion of their annual income. We see images of starving children in far away countries, and our hearts go out to them. But we really do not know the implications of poverty, why it exists, or even what we can do to help combat this giant problem in our world.
Poverty, also known as the silent killer, exists in every corner of the world. In fact, almost half of the world’s population lives in poverty. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were 46.7 million people living in poverty the year of 2014 (1). Unfortunately, thousands of people die each year due to this world-wide problem. Some people view poverty as individuals or families not being able to afford an occupational meal or having to skip a meal to save money. However, this is not the true definition of poverty. According to the author of The Position of Poverty, John Kenneth Galbraith, “people are poverty-stricken when their income, even if adequate for survival, falls radically behind that of the community”, which means people
Poverty is an issue dealt with throughout the world, but we are not all aware of its conditions. Poverty is a very serious problem around the world. Poverty is defined as the equality of poorness and impoverishment -- (the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions). A question to ask ourselves is: “Should poverty be defined strictly in terms of monetary income, as opposed to some qualitative formula which takes into consideration styles of life as well as material possessions?” (Sheppard 13) Because there are so many different ways we can express the term poverty, maybe there should be a certain way we can determine poverty worldwide?
Has anyone ever considered thinking about what the world is really going through? How many people don’t have the necessities in order to survive? If so, what are these people going through? Poverty is the state of one who lacks a standard or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Sometimes events occur that changes a person’s perspective on life. Poverty is one that can have a huge effect on not only one person, but also the people around him/her. Over half of the world is going through this tragedy and we, being the ones who created it, have the responsibility to end it.
