Influential People to Ender Ender Wiggin, a six year old that preserved and fought to become the best commander in the I.F. The influential people in this six year olds life, in the award winning novel Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, moulder ender into the commander of the fleet by impacting his life dramatically. He is influenced by many people he gets into contact with but only a handful of them really makes a direct change in his life. As the plot of the novel progresses, Ender Wigging develops from an inexperienced chid into an effective commander and leader through his interactions with other characters: Peter, Mazar Rackham, And Colonel Graff. The first character that influenced Ender is Peter, his older brother. Peter influences …show more content…
him to tuff-in up and defend himself. Thought Enders childhood Petter disliked him and his sister, and practically forced Ender to contribute in cruel games like buggers and astronauts. Buggers and astronauts is a much more violent version of cops and robbers. “ I could kill you like this just press and press until your dead”. (Card 12) Said Peter during game of buggers and astronauts with Ender. As a direct result of this cruel game, Ender becomes strong and merciless. He shows this side of him later on in the conflicts with Bonzo and Stilton, ending in their deaths. In chapter two, Ender uses a violent strategy to stop Stilson from bullying him any longer. “ Knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones too. So they’d leave me alone”. (Card 19) Peters brutal ways with Ender, resulted in Ender to physically end his problems with Stilton. If it wasn't for Peter, Ender wouldn't know how to fight the way he does. Peter thought Ender to solve problems with physical force, and show no mercy. Secondly Colonel Graff also had a great influence on Ender.
He taught him, how to handle himself in intense situations. When Ender first entered the battle school, Colonel Graff pointed Ender out as the best student. “No, you didn’t, of course you didn’t. Not only stupid, but a liar too. Theres only one boy on this launch with any brains at all and thats Ender Wiggin” (Card 31). This made it extremely hard for Ender to make any friends because of the other kids jealousy. He also got isolated from the other boys in order to open up his creativity and brilliance, and make him think for himself. Enders isolation made him have less distractions, and by that it allowed him to focus on acquiring promotions, and further ranks. When Ender was promoted to toon leadership and after that quickly became the team commander, it definitely made the others despise him more. Upon being promoted to commander Ender came a cross a new group of kids and rookies that he would have to command. But to make it even harder on Ender he had to get along with all of them no matter what, because he was banned from trading them for other kids. Ender also got assigned 2 to 3 battle a day with his new group of kids. “ We’ve assembled a new army by advancing the equivalent of an entire launch course early and delaying the graduation of quite few advanced students. I think you’ll be pleased with the quality of your soldiers because we’re forbidding you to transfer them” (Card 156). Despite the hardship, Ender, single handedly, commanded this team of rookies to go against other teams , and claim a victory each time. Graff arranged this team for Ender to make him learn how to handle himself and his team in intense situations like these. That characteristic that Ender now has further improved his capability to lead a fleet against another bugger
invasion. Finally, Mazar Rackham had a huge impact on Ender. He taught him never to trust anyone completely and even when under pressure, always do his best no matter what the outcome may be. Mazer Rackham was Enders private teacher once he got to the I.F. He told Ender that he was the enemy and never too trust him. “I am your enemy; the first one you’ve ever had who is smarter than you. There is no teacher but the enemy. No one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy is going to do. No one but the enemy will ever teach you how to destroy and conquer. Only the enemy shows you where he's strong. And the rules of the game are what you can do to him and what you can do to stop him. I’m your enemy from now on. From now on I'm your teacher.” (Card 262) Ender never knew when Mazer was going to attack or help him. This taught Ender to never trust anyone completely, because of this Ender has become more self reliant. He shows this by practicing the simulation ten hours a day with his squadron leaders because he knew that the last simulation wouldn't be a piece of cake. Ender reached the final battle with the buggers, and him and his fleet were outnumbered by 10,000 to 1. Even with the officers watching on, and knowing that he was the only student to make it that far into the simulation level, Ender thought it was extremely unfair. “Colonel Graff detached himself from the others and came to Ender. Tears streaming down his face, but he was smiling. He bent over, reached out his arms, and to Enders surprise he embraced him, held him tightly and whispered. Thank you Ender, Thank god for you.” (Card 296). This quotation just shows Enders capability to do his best, even though he was under major pressure. He Claimed victory in the final battle by not letting the pressure get the best of him. To sum up, From all three of these important characters, Ender learned at least one new character trait from each of them. From Peter he learned to be ruthless and show no mercy. From Graff he learned to handle himself in intense situations. And from Mazer Rackham he learned to do his best at all times, no matter what the outcome is, and to never fully trust anyone. In Cards Enders Game, the use of characters helps to develop Enders character throughout his journey of becoming a commander. In this book these three characters make most of Enders personality traits he has today. Ender experienced more in 11 years of his life then most people will in 100. And Ender has Peter, Graff, and Mazar Rackham to thank for that.
Before Ender got picked to fight the buggers he was just a normal boy he went to school like every other kid, one day he got put in a test and if he passed he would go to battle school in space, Ender eventually passed the test and he had a military personnel come to his door and tell his parents that he passed the test and is going to battle school.
The Enders Game written by Orson Scott Card provides understanding of the characters and their relationships with others through indirect characterization and diction. Orson Scott Card uses literacy devices and specific word choice to let the reader draw conclusions about the characters and the relationships between Peter and Ender, the symbolism of the bugger mask/bugger-astronaut game, and the foreshadowing of Peter and Valentines death. The author reveals the relationship between Peter and Ender through Peter’s perception of Ender and the astronaut-bugger game. “Ender did not see Peter as […]
When Ender leaves to Battle School, not only does he face other “Peters” but he experiences fatigue and loneliness from the severe program he is going through. Valentine will begrudgingly be used to motivate Ender in continuing in the program. Ender has improved at Battle School within a year- the youngest toon leader yet and was highest in the ranks. Everyone respected him as a teacher- not as a friend. This made Ender feel utterly depressed. Nobody saw him as a young child- just a respectable commander and that surely made him agitated. Graff and the other adults began to worry about Ender’s health. So, they called in reinforcements and had Valentine write a letter, “She’d written before, and they didn’t let any of those letters through. Those might have been real, but this was asked for, this was part of their manipulation” (Card-107). The IF uses the person Ender as ever truly cared for, Valentine, to motivate him and give him some kind of shrivel of hope to persevere through the program. They believed that Ender would do anything for his sister Valentine because of his unconditional love for his sibling. Even though this manipulation strategy was transparent and quite frustrating for Ender, he was determined not to play by the adults’ rules and he continued to be the best soldier yet. Later, when Ender was promoted to Commander, he stayed on Earth for two months- never wanting to go to space. Valentine is brought to meet him and convince him to go to Eros,” She walked back up the hill, savagely angry at them for making her come to Ender like this. For she had, after all, done just what they wanted. She had talked Ender into going back into his training, and he wouldn’t soon forgive her for that” (Card-170). Valentine knew the consequences of manipulating her brother- that Ender would think
Ender is selected to go to Battle School in space because of the actions he has displayed against a bully after a device known as a monitor, which allows the leaders of the I.F. to watch and hear everything Ender perceives. Although Ender’s conception was predetermined (in this time period, families are only allowed to have two children unless stated by the government which is why Ender is often called a “Third”), he had to display the correct characteristics to be selected. Ender’s siblings, Peter and Valentine also wore the monitor, but neither wore it as long nor was selected because Peter was too cruel and Valentine was too mild. Once Ender arrives, he makes a couple new friends from the other selected children, including a boy named Alai. When Ender is alone, he plays a mind game and progresses farther than anyone has before so out of the blue, Ender becomes promoted to a group called Salamander Army, where he befriends the only girl, Petra Arkanian, at Battle School. As Ender continues to display his brilliance, he is continuously being promot...
Leading up to that he faces enemies and obstacles in the form of bigger kids and the games that he wins thoroughly, to the point where he cannot be beat. He always is one set ahead of whatever is thrown at him. Until Ender finds the Bugger Queen pupa.” Reached into the cavity and took out the cocoon.” (Card 321) Here in this scene Ender is going against what we have come to see as part of who he is. He has the intent to allow the Buggers to rebuild and try to live along side of humans. Normally he destroys something so thoroughly that it can never hurt him or the people he is fighting for again. This is perhaps one of the very best examples of the theme that one’s past does not define them or their
Ender’s game is a science fiction novel written by Orson Scott card it was published in 1985. This book is in the future when in the story earth has been invaded by an alien race and is almost destroyed by the invasion but wins the battle and to prevent earth from being destroyed if they return they create the International fleet which recruits kids an teaches them to be commanders. The chapter that I am going to analyze is chapter one which is called Third. This chapter shows how Ender is being manipulated since the start and how he has to deal with being different by being a third.
Petra and Dink are warning ender to always be accompanied by somebody and to never be alone. That night Ender’s only way of falling asleep is by thinking about how the teachers will protect him outside the battle room if he truly means something to them. The next day after winning two battles he falls asleep and wakes up just a little before lunch time. Carelessly he walked in to take a shower, until Bonzo and other seven boys come up on him. Bonzo is the boys in the room that truly wants to kill Ender. In order for Ender to face him one-on-one he uses Bonzo’s honor to get the other boys to back down. Before the fight Dink rushes in, but is held back by the other boys as he tries to prevent the fight from happening. Ender provokes Bonzo and when Bonzo charges at him ender quickly hits Bonzo’s head with his face. To prevent from Bonzo trying to attack again Ender hits him in the ribs and crotch, but Bonzo does not move. Dink later takes Ender away from the bathroom as the teachers that were supposed to protect him come rushing in. Ender’s later reminded of Bonzo’s face when he first hit him and Stilson’s face too and later begins to cry. Ender is given another battle with two armies at the same time, but he is completely done with battles even after winning. Ender is informed by Bean that his toon leaders had been promoted along with their assistants too. They are now commanders including Bean himself. Ender is also informed that he has graduated to Command school but before he goes to Command School he goes back to Earth. It turns out that Ender killed Bonzo and Stilson, but they never told him. Down in Earth military officers have found out who Demosthenes and Loc...
After years of being monitored by government officials, Ender Wiggins, the main character of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, finds himself completely alone. The loneliness set's in as he finds himself in a new school, away from the watchful eyes of the government and bared to the world. He is a Third. This feeling of being a third makes Ender feel even more isolated, "It was not his fault he was a Third. It was the government's idea, they were the ones who authorized it - how else could a Third like Ender have got into school?" (Card 5). There was no one there to keep the bullies away now. Although he never really liked the monitor, he now found himself alone and missing the advent ages of having it on and knowing that someone, somewhere was always with him and watching him. At battle school, Ender knows that he will be isolated from the other students. Colonel Graff tells the other students of Ender and how superior his talents and intelligence is compared to the rest of the group. The other students don't like Ender and don't trust him. Throughout battle school, Ender is kept from his family and isolated from other children.
Ender is first shown as intelligent and skillful, and Peter shows the same attributes throughout the story. Ender uses his intellect to triumph over his bullies, and this translates to his experience in the Battle Room. He has to outsmart the enemy, rather than beat them physically, and it worked in his favor the majority of the time. Ender understands when he has to use his physicality to beat a bully, but also knows when he has to strategize to avoid a certain situation. When Ender is encountered by Bonzo after he won the battle by disobeying Bonzo’s orders, he has to use his judgement rather than his fists to get what he wants. Ender argued with Bonzo, “‘... I’ll pretend that you won this argument. Then tomorrow you can tell me you changed your mind.’ ‘I don’t need you to tell me what to do.’ ‘I don’t want the other guys to think you backed down. You wouldn’t be able to command as well’” (Card 87). Ender understands what his enemy, in this case Bonzo, wants, and knows how he can make both of them get what they want. He doesn’t resolve to violence when he knows that he can use a different method that benefits him. Ender’s intelligence and strategizing helps him overcome the difficulty he approaches throughout his life. Peter also uses his intellect to benefit himself throughout the events that happen.
Therefore, Ender shows the reader that he takes responsibility as an adult for just waking up early and on time for his battles. Therefor, Ender taking that responsibility must be hard since he's just a kid and has to be responsible for
He uses a combination of Peter’s ruthlessness with Valentine’s compassion. “In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves” (Card 238). Ender reveals this to Valentine because it is the main reason why he despises himself. Ender first uses his method against Stilson after getting his chip removed. He realizes that with the way Stilson is, the only way to stop him is to cause enough pain to deter retaliation. Learning from his enemies does not only occur on Earth. While being rejected in Salamander Army, Ender studies the good and bad techniques in the battle room. Given that, Ender ultimately beats Bonso once he is in command of his own army. He continues to do this with every person and battle he comes into contact with, making him the best commander at
...is enemy, he became the most ruthless and yet most compassionate commander the world has ever seen in all the wars the human race has withstood. Above all, however, isolation is the tool that made all the attributes transparent and viable to Ender and to the I.F. Beyond the war, Ender became more than just a tool to be used; he became a savior. A savior of not only one, but two different races bent on destroying each other. Ender became the very definition of Hope.
In the story “Ender's Game” many interesting actions and events happen. From wars to death, to games, that are not games anymore. This story is about a young boy that lives in a world that is constantly under attack from extraterrestrials called the Buggers. In the beginning, Ender is just a young boy constantly controlled and watched by the government (The IF). In the middle, he is taken to battle school and there the people realize that he is the best person for the job and will lead the human race to victory over the Buggers. Lastly, the IF puts Ender and his group together to beat the buggers in a final war. The book “Ender’s Game” written by Orson Scott Card is a fun and exciting science fiction book that leaves the reader at the edge of its seat. The symbolism and hidden messages in the book make the reader connect to the story. The title, the characters, and the setting all have something more to bring to the table and change
... he commanded his own platoon. Those are phases Ender went through. During one battle he faced, he cheated. Page 218 describes Ender’s men passed through the gate without soldiers before the gate was reversed. He had to cheat because he was exhausted and he needed assistance. Ender was battling two teams at once, never done before at battle school.. Finally every game has a final stage or battle. In Ender’s Game the final battle was against the buggers. Ender fights them on page 297. Ender was actually tricked into fighting them. This point proves how life is a game because games have a final battle/stage and Ender fought in one. Ender as a game piece, cheating and fighting in a final stage/battle prove how life is a game.
He up agents a whole planet and a vast number of ships. He ends up winning by using a secret weapon on the planet that blows it up. When he finishes the battle he realizes that everyone is cheering behind him. When he asks why they tell him that all of his missions were real ones against the buggers and that he had just destroyed all of the buggers. My favorite character in this book is Ender. He is my favorite character for many reasons.
