Our nation's revolution was a great achievement in U.S History. With the dawn of a new nation, there would have to be a central location to make the new decisions of our country. Our capitol has stood as the heart of our country since the late 1700s. The United States capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. For almost two centuries it has housed the meeting chambers of the senate and the House of Representatives. Begun in 1793, the capitol building has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Today our capitol stands as a monument to the American people and their government. (AOC.gov)
“Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction.” These are the words of Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States of America, speaking on the topic of freedom, a subject he frequently dealt with during his long presidency. Over the years, freedom in the U.S. has become an increasingly controversial topic, and the effectiveness of the government in affording these freedoms has been called into question. Through certain historical documents and events, the government’s effectiveness at ensuring freedoms for all can be confirmed. The occurrences of several major events in the history of America eventually gave all blacks equal rights and fostered a culture of change in American society. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, written by President Abraham Lincoln, was one of the most
One of the great things about America is the fact that it echoes previous centuries in ways that not many people would expect. Due to its diversity, it is thought of as a melting pot because it is filled with all kinds of culture and people from all over the world. But instead of this stereotypical metaphor, America can be thought of as the place where world architecture has not died, but instead has continued to thrive in a way that makes it suitable towards modern expectations. Greek architecture has been one of the most commonly used within this context. Although it emerged almost 3,000 years ago, the application of their architecture is still widely used today in places that aren’t Europe. We can see evidence of this through America’s government and financial buildings such as the Georgia’s Chamber of Commerce, the Capitol and even more commonly known, the White House. The White House is a major symbol of the United States and when bystanders observe its white walls, they not only a building of high status among the American people, but they also catch a glimpse into the past of centuries worth of influential architecture.
The overall style of the building, with its simple black facade stressing verticality, reflects the prevalence of Miesian architecture in Downtown Chicago. From a distance, the simplicity helps demonstrate the structural system, as the lack of decoration instead features the tubular construction. The intersecting column lines are also abundantly clear, even from several miles away, adding to the visual separation of individual tubes. Black louvres cover the trussed levels of the building, making these levels apparent and visually clean. The Willis Tower has been a part of the Chicago skyline for nearly 40 years. The establishment formation is a wrap system of nine squares with sides of 75 feet (for an overall width of 225 x 225 ft. btw. exterior column lines and 229' at outside faces). Height to width ratio is 6.45:1. The tower was completed for $160 Million and used 76,000 tons of steel, 72,000 cubic yards of concrete, 17,500 tons of mechanical equipment. At cap fabrication, over 2,400 craftsmen were on site illustrating 60 different subcontractors. There are 76 single-deck elevators in addition to 14 double-deck elevators, bringing the total to 104 cabs. Other imposing amount contain 25,000 miles of plumbing and 2,000 miles of electrical wire. The exterior building material shows very little aging, a sign of its durable construction. Not only has the skyscraper
Brooklyn Bridge By: Joey Birchard & Gavin Maschmeyer. The Brooklyn Bridge, which connects New York City to Brooklyn, was considered the “eighth wonder of the world” when it opened on May 24, 1883. At the time it was believed to be impossible to build a bridge large enough to span the extensive width of the East River as well as to withstand the turbulent water conditions. However, a safer, easier method of transportation between Manhattan and Brooklyn was needed if New York City was going to continue to grow.
John Thomas was a young man from New York who came from a poor family. However, that did not prevent him from making something of himself. He had hope that one day he would make it out of the squalor of the slums. He wanted to be a leader in the Big Apple. He dreamed of being one of the prominent architects of his day. As he looked around the city, his eyes always landed on the Empire State Building. He was drawn to the tall, streamlined building. He wanted to build eye catching skyscrapers that would catch people's attention just like the Empire State Building. He knew is would be a long journey and that he had a lot of work ahead of him, but he wasn’t going to let anything crush his dreams.
The building progressed well until the civil war. At this time construction was halted for almost 25 years. This left the unfinished obelisk standing 150 feet. Finally, on August 2, 1876, President Grant ordered the completion of the monument. The capstone was placed on the monument on December 6, 1884 and it was finally dedicated on February 21, 1885. Elevators were first powered by a steam hoist. The current elevator was installed in 195...
Previously, the tallest building was the Rand Tower; the Foshay Tower loomed over it by 137 feet. The building took Foshay and Arnal three years to develop and build, but the success of the building was short-lived. Prior to the opening of the building, Foshay contacted John Philip Sousa to write and conduct a march for the building’s opening. Although the march was written, Sousa refused to have it performed. The $20,000 check, written from Foshay to Sousa, bounced as the result of the newly-arrived Great Depression. The building was opened at an extremely inopportune time, as a short two months after its completion, the United States experienced the devastating effects of the stock market crash. This was the downfall of the building, and because of the stock market crash, the building would soon go into
Love is blind, it can happen anywhere, anytime, and with anyone. At the age of 18, I experienced my first love, but we were apart. I think Taj Mahal changed peoples view of love, and made peoples bond intense. Love is magical, it just happens and you don’t even realize it until something is taken away from you. Taj Mahal is one strong example of love, because it shows how Shah Jahan built a proof of his love (Taj Mahal), buried her body under the Taj Mahal, and stared at the monument for eight years of his jail.
