R.S. has been using the recommended treatment for his condition, which inlcude inhaled short-acting Beta-2 agonist and Theophylline, a bronchodilator, to control his respiratory disease.
R.S. has chronic bronchitis. According to the UC San Francisco Medical Center “Chronic bronchitis is a common type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in which the air passages in the lungs — the bronchi — are repeatedly inflamed, leading to scarring of the bronchi walls. As a result, excessive amounts of sticky mucus are produced and fill the bronchial tubes, which become thickened, impeding normal airflow through the lungs.” (Chronic Bronchitis 2015) There are many things that can be observed as clinical findings. R.S. will have a chronic cough that has lasted from 3 months to two years or more, and a lot of sputum. The sputum is due to
Lasix is known as the “water pill” it’s a diuretic administrated orally.(1) The active ingredient of Lasix is furosemide, but also includes a number of inactive ingredients including lactose monohydrate NF, magnesium stearate NF, starch NF, talc USP, and colloidal silicon dioxide NF. (1) The peak effects of furosemide are typically seen within the first hour of two after a dose of the medication. (1). Lasix is prescribed for individuals to treat edema that may arise from congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis or renal disease. (1) In adults, furosemide may also be taken to treat hypertension itself.(1) Furosemide comes in 20, 40, and 80mg tablets as well as oral suspensions.(2) Furosemide is absorbed rapidly from oral suspension at 50 minutes, and from tablets at 87 minutes.(2) Food may slow down the absorption of the drug and alter the bioavalibitly.(1) Furosemide binds to plasma proteins, albumin being the main plasma protein that furosemide binds to, at 91-99%, and peak plasma concentrations increase with the increase of a single dose.(2) Furosemide is excreted through the urine and the remainder is excreted in the feces. (2) The half-life for furosemide is approximately 2 hours but the diuretic effects last 6-8 hours. (2)
Oxygen, inhaled bronchodilators, inhaled steroids, combination inhalers, oral steroids, phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors and theophylline are effective medications for COPD (Mayo Clinic, 2016). “Patients with COPD have persistent high levels of CO2, their respiratory centers no longer respond to increased levels of CO2 by stimulating breathing. Therefore, COPD patients with more severe hypoxemia are at higher risk of CO2 retention from uncontrolled CO2 administration” (Van Houten, p. 13). For nurses, “It is important to administer the lowest amount of O2 necessary to patients” (Van Houten, p. 13). Some COPD medicines are used with inhaler and nebulizer devices. It is important to teach patients how to use these devices correctly. (Potter & Perry,
The purpose of this essay is to explore nursing care priorities for a patient with a common health condition. A common health condition is a disease or condition which occurs most often within a population. The author has chosen scenario 3 for this essay and will describe the nursing assessment and care planning provided to a patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The WHO definition of COPD is a lung disease which has a chronic obstruction of the airways that impedes normal breathing and is not fully reversible (). According to), there are estimated to be over 3 million people in the UK with COPD. It is common in later life and there are approximately 25,000 deaths each year, with 15% of COPD being work related (The identity of the patient will remain anonymous in adherence with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Code of Conduct on patient confidentiality (). However, the patient will be referred to as Mr B in this essay. The author has chosen the priority of eating and drinking for Mr B. Patients with COPD are at increased risk of malnutrition and nurses must make certain they screen patients and offer advice or refer as necessary (). If this priority is managed well it will have a positive effect on the other priorities (, 2012). In accordance with NICE Guideline 101 (), the treatment and care provided should consider each persons’ individual requirements and preference. Care and treatment should take into account people’s individual needs and choices. To allow people to reach informed decisions there must be good communication, supported by evidence-based practice (). This essay will provide an evidence based discussion on how care will be implemented in relation to Mr B and his eating and drin...

Therefore, low intakes of lutein may promote the progression of AMD. To determine the effect of lutein on the progression of AMD, Richer et al.4 conducted a 12-month prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that consisted of 90 subjects who expressed symptoms of AMD in one or both eyes. The participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: 29 participants were assigned to Group 1(10 mg non-esterified lutein), 30 participants were assigned to Group 2(10 mg non-esterified lutein plus additional antioxidants and nutrients in the form of a multivitamin), and 31 participants were assigned to Group 3 and received the placebo. Ophthalmic testing measured MPOD, BCVA, and CS at baseline, 4 months, 8 months, and 12 months. The three groups were controlled for age, years diagnosed with AMD, smoking, caffeine/alcohol use, iris color, multivitamin use, as well as dietary intake of lutein and iron. The results indicated that between the time baseline measurements were conducted and the final study visit: MPOD increased approximately 36 percent (0.09 log units) in Group 1, 43 percent (0.08 log units) in Group 2, and decreased 0.03 log units in Group 3. BCVA increased 5.4 and 3.5 Snellen letters for Group 1 and 2 respectively as well a decrease of 0.2 Snellen letters for Group 3. The results indicated that over the course of the study CS increased
The impact of Emphysema and COPD took the life of my best friend of 20 years on 30 January 2017 at the age of 64. As I sit here tonight in a hotel on my way to her funeral, I could not help but stop and read your post. Eleven years ago when she was diagnosed she continued to smoke until six years ago when an exacerbation placed her in the hospital for three weeks on a ventilator. After this event she stopped smoking and began attending pulmonary rehab, but over the last year the impact of smoking since she was 14 took its toll. On the second of November she was the recipient of a bilateral
