Empathy is important in healthcare filed because it can improve healthcare professional-patient relationships. Empathy towards cancer patients is a core ingredient to their treatments and also disease status. I believe healthcare provider’s degree of empathy has a direct link to positive clinical outcomes in cancer patients. After hearing Dr. Fidler’s story about her non-Hodgkin lymphoma, it was very impressive. She got diagnosed on her second pregnancy. She felt bad about the way she was told to have lymphoma because the doctor seemed to have no empathy to her. He just told her and then turned away from her. In that situation, she prefers someone who can really show empathy to her and talk to her hand in hand about this disease. Empathy not only can lead to better patient compliance towards the treatment, but also help building stronger relationship between patient and healthcare providers. When Dr. Fidler talked about her oncologist, she mentioned that her oncologist was the most empathic person in the world and she felt being understandable and appreciate from it. Back then, people were thinking empathy was something that we were born with or without. However, in this speech, it emphasizes that empathic is something that we can learn from. Careful attention is a key component for empathy. Eye contact, facial expression, posture, and tone of voice are some key factors about how to express empathy. Every human being has a longing to be seen, understood, and appreciated. If patient do not feel care, it takes longer to recovery and poorer immune functions as well. The power of empathy is essential to solve lots of problem in the world. Moreover, from radiolab podcast, I also knew about the drug price is very high burden for cancer patients. Therefore, showing empathic to cancer patient is very crucial for healthcare
