Being able to connect with someone through their experiences and being able to put one’s self in someone else’s shoes, that is empathy. Reading fiction teaches the readers how to become more empathetic towards one another. Reading can put one in the characters position in the story thus making the reader empathetic toward the character because they can picture what they are going through. Becoming more empathetic towards one another starts with reading fiction. When reading the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the angel is given such terrible living conditions by a couple that find him after he has fallen. The owners of the house put him in a chicken coop with the chickens and all their feces. While he is in the chicken coop, the chickens then start to peck at his wings. When going to a psychiatrist, they are educated in helping people cope and get through difficult or confusing times in their lives. They have to be very empathetic within the field of work to be able to understand what their client is going through. “Reading literature can help doctors better understand the ‘narratives’ of their patients” (Beveridge 385). Not only is it a good idea to read fiction as it is to become more empathetic, but if one is in this line of work, they should consider reading more or start reading fiction to be able to connect better with their clients. The same journals states that though fiction helps you see things through someone else’s eyes, this is especially true when the story talks of illness and suffering (Beveridge 385). Psychiatrist’s deal with illness and suffering a lot throughout their work life from their clients and they should be able to connect with the client if they had just lost a loved one to an illness or if the client themselves has been going through an
