A lack of practicing empathy can negatively impact relationships and society. In the short story, “All Summer in a Day”, by Ray Bradbury, portrays a little girl that is in a society where empathy is less important to encourage younger generations to have. Bradbury states in the 5th paragraph of the story, “‘Aw, you didn’t write that!’ protested one of the boys. ‘I did,’ said Margot. ‘I did.”’ In this quote, the little girl, Margot, just shared a poem with the class and her classmate, William, decided to basically call her a liar and say that she didn’t come up with the poem by herself. As all of this is happening, the rest of class sits there listening and not depending Margot as she gets bullied. The lack of empathy is shown here, because out of the whole class, someone most likely has been bullied before and understands the feeling Margot must be having, but yet no one stands up for her. …show more content…
In the same short story,by Bradbury, within the 8th paragraph, the author states that Margot gets bullied again by the same classmate as before. “‘ What are you looking at?’ said William. Margot said nothing. ‘:Speak when you’re spoken to.’ he gave her a shove.” In this quote, the same kid that picked on Margot earlier, came up to her while she was looking out the window minding her own business and started bullying her. From William bullying and shoving Margot, this evidently proves that lack of practicing empathy can cause violence. William doesn’t understand how Margot feels and how she wants to be left alone and he shows a lack of empathy not understanding in which causes him to use
Compassion has became something rare in our society, and something that a lot of people lack. The author, Barbara Lazear Ascher, explains to us that compassion is not a character trait, but rather something that we learn along the way with the help of real life situations we encounter, such as the ones she encountered herself. Ascher persuades her audience that compassion is not just something you are born with by using anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and allusions.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings with others. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many characters who showed the quality of empathy. A few examples who undoubtedly showed empathy were the main characters Jem, Atticus, and the narrator Scout Finch. These characters learned and demonstrated compassion throughout the book.
In Empathy, Stephen Dunn, who went to war to fight for his country. When he was on the leave from the army, he felt that it was the beginning of empathy for himself. In Too Much Happiness, Alice Munro learns about the significance of the relationship between a young mathematician named Sophia and her professor. The professor admits that one of his self-interest was for a student to challenge him completely, who is not only capable of following the rules of his own mind but to open up his mind. The interplay between empathy and self-interest is that they both effect on each other in many ways, such as, we benefit as a whole from selfless self-interest and caring for others more than we would from the survival of one at the cost of everyone else.
Empathy is one of the greatest powers that a human being can ever hope to achieve; one person being able to understand the inner-workings of another is something truly amazing. However, empathy isn’t something that one is always naturally able to accomplish; in fact, it usually takes a long time for one to develop any empathy at all. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the reader follows Scout Finch as she experiences her youth in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. In this story, we experience her empathy for others as it increases or decreases. Though there are many examples of these alterations in Scout’s relationships, there is one that is both prominent and more complex than a few others; her relationship with her aunt, Alexandra. There are three specific instances in which we can track the progression of Scout’s empathy towards her aunt; meeting Aunt Alexandra, Scout wanting to invite Walter Cunningham over, and the assault by Bob Ewell of Scout and Jem.
To explain a few empathy is when the reader understands closely what the character is feeling. For instance, Kolb has kept a mental list of comments that are made when she first interacts with people. It states, “I don’t know what to do with my hands. It’s like I’ve just discovered I have them, Are you sure it’s O.K. to point? At him?, I am trying to be more expressive. My face just feels like it can’t, That feels weird, How do your eyes take in so much information, so fast?, I feel self-conscious. I feel like you are looking at me” (The Deaf Body in Public Space). If anyone ever said these comments to me I would be highly upset because her only way communicating is through sign and they have to take the time to understand what she goes through every day. Every time Kolb meets someone for the first time she encounters comments like these. Argumentation is aimed at convincing a reasonable critic of the acceptability of a standpoint by putting forward a constellation of one or more propositions to justify this standpoint (What is Argumentation?). In the beginning of the article one of Kolb’s friends said it was rude to point. Kolb had to justify that her mom said she can do it since it was her only way of communication. The philosopher Aristotle once wrote, “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” This famous quote compels people to question the significance of their joy, and whether it truly represents purposeful lives they want to live. Ray Bradbury, a contemporary author, also tackles this question in his book, Fahrenheit 451, which deals heavily with society's view of happiness in the future. Through several main characters, Bradbury portrays the two branches of happiness: one as a lifeless path, heading nowhere, seeking no worry, while the other embraces pure human experience intertwined together to reveal truth and knowledge.

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is an American classic which analyzes and satirizes most if not all of the major issues at the time of its making. These issues are viewed through the eyes of the twelve-year-old Huck who has a unique perspective on the world due to his lack of family and overall wild nature. When the kids locked Margot in the closet they were being selfish and making Margot feel bad about something that was completely out of her control. After reading the book, “Seasons of Life” by Jeffrey Marx, I learned a lot about a man named Joe Ehrmann. Ehrmann addresses many coaches, captains, and influential high school athletes. He is on a mission to change the world and believes it can be done by sports and social change. On page 49 of the book a character Biff asks what empathy is. Napoleon Sykes replies with, “Feeling what the other person feels.” This was a great response but Biff added, “Not feeling for someone, but with someone.
