Never Forget by Emma Hart is about a teenage girl who learns that sometimes happiness doesn't always come when you want it to but when you are least expecting it. As shown in the book a quote shows, “Lexy…” She takes my hand again. You have to learn...that...you might not end up where...you want to be… but you’ll always...end up...where you're meant...to be. Maybe Alec is…your meant...to be.” This shows the author's message that sometimes the best things in life come when you wait for it not when you try to rush and find it yourself. Another example from the book shows, “We all have a meant to be, whether we believe in fate, destiny, or nothing at all. Do we decide our meant to be, or do we get it chosen for us? Do we get more than one option?
After reading the novel As I Lay Dying, I was able to gather some first impressions about Jewel Bundren. One of these impressions is that Jewel Bundren is aware that Anse Bundren is not his father,. One reason why this is evident is because when Jewel half brother, Darl, is questioning him about who his father is, Jewel doesn’t answer, meaning he might know that he isn’t related to Anse. Another reason this is evident is due to the way Jewel acts when he is talking to Anse, as he is continuously disrespectful to him. Even though it’s shown Jewel is aware that Anse is not his father, there is no indication in the novel that he is aware that Whitfield is really his father. Another first impression I was able to gather about Jewel
Act 3 of the Crucible can only be described as crazy. Each character was fighting their own battle; Every one of them lost except for Reverend Parris. Revered Parris was struggling to keep his reputation and career alive. If the trials were to end fraudulently, Parris would be left with a lying daughter and niece. He is only trying to cover himself and make sure his social position is not lowered because of witchcraft in his house. I am not a fan of Reverend Parris.
Jeanette Walls is the picture-perfect illustration of an individual who finds righteousness for herself. She is the protagonist in the book “The Glass Castle”, who has an unfair miserable childhood due to how her parents were. Walls stands out for her determination as she goes out to the real world to seek her own justice, with the ultimate goal of being stable for once, and take responsibility for herself, not for the whole family.
Elizabeth Lavenza (later Elizabeth Frankenstein) is one of the main characters in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. She is a beautiful young girl; fragile and perfect in the eyes of all. Her father was a nobleman from Milan, while her mother was of German descent. Before she was adopted by the wealthy Frankenstein family, she lived with a poor family. After Alphonose and Caroline Frankenstein adopt Elizabeth, they lovingly raise her alongside their biological son, Victor Frankenstein, in hopes that the two will eventually get married. When Victor goes off to Ingolstadt college, Elizabeth writes letters to him that later become a crucial part of the story. It weaves together every piece of the story, holding together each individual
There is no doubt that Miss. Strangeworth is not an easy person to deal with, let alone live with, and although her character is fictional, there are many people with the same personality. We can tell quite easily that she is a very meticulous woman, with a lot of perfectionist tendencies, a few of which are to nitpick people’s lives and make sure that even the most minute detail is up to her standards. I know of someone with these attributes and as difficult as they are to deal with, with their list of requirements to be met and their eagle-eye for detail in even the smallest things, they mean the best, and are always trying to help, despite the possible repercussions.
In Great Expectations, Pip is set up for heartbreak and failure by a woman he trusts, identical to Hamlet and Gertrude, but Pip is rescued by joe who pushes Pip to win the love of his life. Similar to Gertrude in Hamlet Miss Havisham becomes a bystander in Pip’s life as she initiates the play that leads to heartbreak several times and she watches Pip’s life crumble due to her teachings. The next quote shows Miss Havisham explaining to Pip the way she manipulated his love Estella to break his heart every time. “‘but as she grew, and promised to be very beautiful, I gradually did worse, and with my praises, and with my jewels, and with my teachings… I stole her heart away and put ice in its place’” (Dickens, 457). This quote makes it clear the Miss Havisham set Hamlet up for failure by making him fall for a woman he could never have.
In The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, Lady Brett Ashley is a representative of the New Woman, changing the American landscape. This is shown when she changes from a female to male role, as she pleases. For example, when she takes the place of a male role she demands that people please her such as, when she ordered Jake to “kiss” (Hemingway, 15) her “once more before [they] get there.” (Hemingway, 15) Although changed back to her female role when “she gave [Jake] her hand as she stepped down” (Hemingway, 15) For a man to help a woman out of a car is known as a chivalrous and an expected action, especially in the past, in addition, the man is suppose to initiate the kiss. Brett is a woman who wants to display a secure, stable, satisfied and independent life to the point where readers are not able to
Hester Prynne was said to have "perfect elegance on a large scale" (Hawthorne 56). While on the scaffold, Hester smiled and blushed as she held her baby (Hawthorne 56). Hester knew that the townspeople scorned her and thought horrible things about her, yet she was ladylike the entire time (Hawthorne 57). Hester was a prideful woman who was "marked with natural dignity and force of character" (Hawthorne 56). Hester’s pride in herself prevented the townspeople’s hatred from affecting her outward appearance (Hawthorne 56). Yet, despite Hester’s calm demeanor, she felt as if she were going insane. As the townspeople watched, Hester felt "as if her heart had been flung into the street" (Hawthorne 59). The narrator noted times when Hester seemed
Compared to the other two books we have read The Starship Troopers is the first to introduced a strong female character that represent something. Carmencita Ibanez is completely confident in herself and the choice of signing up to become a spaceship pilot. Once inside the office the sergeant completely ignored the two boys and directly beginnings to communicate with Carmencita. Why would Heinlein have the sergeant ignore but also question their motives for joining, why discourage the boys but applaud Carmencita for her actions? Beside the fact that the sergeant mentions that there are to many volunteers, Johnnie and his friend are allowed to join simply because they can't turn anyone away. Well this tactic could be used to sort those
“To be happy in this world, especially when youth is past, it is necessary to feel oneself not merely an isolated individual whose day will soon be over, but part of the stream of life flowing on from the first germ to the remote and unknown future”
Yann Martel once said that “You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it.” In this quote, Martel explains that not everything will go as we plan. No matter what happen in life, never give up and seek for success. Yann Martel quotes connect to the novel Vaclav & Lena by Haley Tanner. In the novel, the characters go through different circumstances in life, facing many tragedies and end with a happy ending.
“Intensely selfish people are always very decided as to what they wish. They do not waste their energies in considering the good for others.” Throughout one’s journey of their pursuit of success, one can acquire selfishness. This quote by Robert Brault explains the results of one’s acquisition of greed. Selfishness is a trait that changes one’s personality and causes one to ignore the good for others. Greed has changed personalities of many people including Joe Keller in All My Sons by Arthur Miller, J.R. Simplot in Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, Steve Jobs in “The Tweaker" by Malcolm Gladwell, and Jerry in “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing. They all fall to an extent, hurt their loved ones and society emotionally. Also, these people deny their failure as
Be determined! Our yesterday mistakes do not determine tomorrow's future. The goal of my story, even my trial and tribulations, is to reach out to those young teens with babies that feel there is no chance of moving forward in high school and college. The book is to not only reach out to young teens but young ladies who need a little advice from a woman who was once in a place where I had a problem with identity and self-esteem. A young lady who knew she had a dream to go to college and wanted to overcome the average living of excuses. Excuses used from the majority of those who were in my circle because they made mistakes. I was not going to let my mitakes hold me back. It was hard and I knew it was going to be hard, but I was up for the journey.
How is it that life always seems to pan out the way our parents say it will? ‘Don’t do that, this will happen’; ‘don’t walk down that road, that will be the consequence’ Oh, how right they were! ‘Oh son, how dull life can be! How tedious and horrible. How life can beat you with a stick and subdue your will to live, to persist, and to endure.’
When you look back on your life, what do you remember most? Personal achievements fade from memory as you age; setbacks and failures aren’t there; arguments argue their existence away; simple daily tasks blend together and take care of themselves. Only one thing remains – moments of fulfilment. Some things make you feel pure joy, but you wouldn’t want to do them again. Fulfillment is different. It’s when you’re so unbelievably happy you could do that same thing over and over again for the rest of your life.
