In the article “The Digital Parent Trap”, written in August 2013 by Eliana Dockterman, she explains the assets of technology for young students. Dockterman uses many strategies to persuade parents of the benefits of technology. The author uses ethos, writing structure, and statistics to persuade the audience.
She starts off her argument with her own personal experience then transitions into an example of a girl she interviewed named Caitlyn. She uses Caitlyn as an example to show that teenagers start posting their everyday lives from a young age. Caitlyn likes to post her blogs, her photos and documentaries about her school on the internet for the world to see. She has the characteristics from the author’s previous argument that she thinks she has an invisible audience on the internet and because of this she posts her daily routine. When Caitlyn took a trip to Manhattan, she posted her pictures and “memories of her time in New York [which] are [now] stored both in her memory, where they will decay, and on her site” (Nussbaum 3). During this argument, the author only uses examples of her personal interviews; she does not have any facts from credible resources. If the author where to include more personal examples of teenagers, it would not give the reader the suspicion on whether or not this is true for all youth. If teenagers thought about the consequences of posting online their daily lives, than many people would not do it. By taking this argument into consideration many people would be more careful about what they post. 1. I think your essay was not written too informally at all. It was relatable in a way that wasn't so casual. I not only understood where you were coming from with your arguments but I also found an agreement in what your overall takeaway was. It was a message that was not harsh in the sense of being a horrible human being but in regaining the strength and social status of society itself.

Many middle and high schoolers hear all the time about cyberbullying and not to do it, but the book Backlash really puts the issue into a harsh perspective for its readers. Sarah Darer Littman has written many books including Backlash, which deals with a lot of issues we face today. Backlash starts off with one of the major characters, Sydney. Argument (Commentary): Connecting the evidence to the thesis- Based from the data in Document B, we can assume that if the highest percentage of the surveyed British teachers said they were not affected by cyberbullying, then other teachers in other nations and schools would most likely be the same. In her article “How the Internet Has Changed Bullying”, Maria Konnikova explained how bullying has reached technology, and in the workplaces of many adults. The Internet has made it harder to escape from bullying, and easier for bullies to escape from confronting their victims. Furthermore, the author stresses that cyberbullying not only targets high schoolers, but it’s affecting the lives of college students as well (Konnikova 1). Cyberbullying takes place in the Internet world where is easier for a bully to gossip and humiliate multiple of victims in a faster pace. I do not agree with parents eavesdropping some private conversation between their child and their child’s friend. It invades the child’s privacy and it would make him/her feel absolutely down about it since he/she can’t be free from his/her parents. Even if the parents tell their children that they have set up the spyware on their computer, they will always find a way to talk to their Internet friends privately. Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. The overarching idea of the internet and hate speech is that it will spread if not censored and it will give a false idea that speech that is hateful is ok. Sean McElwee, Writer and researcher for the Huffington Post, said that “...the freedom of the press should be governed by a very strict prohibition of all and every anonymity.” However, with the Internet, the public dialogue has moved online, where hate speech is easy and anonymous. This leads to the thought of the hate speech spreading to them bullying others with these hateful ideas. The direct link between bullying and mental health is increasingly real and it will continue without the censorship of hate speech on the internet. But the reality, there are better ways to stop hate speech without removing free speech. Furthermore, this is a problem caused by kids, teens, and adults who target one another online by repeating harmful threats and harassments. This conflict negatively impacts the victims’ life which is why anyone who cyberbullies should pay the consequences and be prosecuted.

There are different types of cyberbullying. This topic comes as an interest to many people these days because bullying is very common and it can ruin a person’s life. These days, cyberbullying is considered a new form of bullying. It can happen over the internet by computer, mobile phone or any other electronic devices. Cyberbullying could involve any form of unpleasant words or pictures being displayed on the internet for others to see. It could also involve the spreading of lies about the victim on the internet. Many people are stepping up efforts to prevent bullying in the first place. Approximately half of U.S. students are impacted by traditional bullying each school day (Ross). Bullying peaks in middle school, then reduces in high school. Other types of bullying may involve the passing of notes behind someone’s back, rumors being whispered about someone, or being threatened in the internet. The most common types of cyberbullying include passing of humiliating photos, cell phone pranks, cyber stalking, impersonation, online slam books, and text wars.
